I remember watching an episode and they showed a flashback of when the girls all met for the first time and then lived together. I can't remember off hand which episode but I know that "Blanche" had put up an ad on a bulletin board looking for a roommate and she meets up with "Rose" and they hit it off. "Dorothy" is already at the house and "Sophia" shows up later on.

80's Fan is right. There was an episode which showed Blanche putting up an ad on a bulletin board for a roommate and Rose showed up with a cat, which she eventually gave to a little kid there and that made Blanche like Rose enough to give her the room. When they got there, Dorothy was already at the house and Sophia showed up after Shady Pines burned down.

The last episode of season one, "The Way We Met", tells how they all met. Blanche, Dorothy and Rose had watched "Psycho" and couldn't sleep, so they talked about how they met and became roommates.
