View Full Version : On the market for a combo DVD/VHS recorder
PZelda 02-21-2005, 02:40 PM Hi,
I will be able to purchase a DVD recorder soon. I will, however, need some input. I am looking to buy a combo DVD/VHS recorder (but I will consider stand-alone DVD recorders too, if they're easy to use. I'm not a hardcore trader or recorder, altho I do have hundreds of tapes) so I can just stick an old tape in, record it to DVD and be done.
What do you guys have, and how good has your recorder been to you? The one product I'm trying to avoid is Phillips, because I've heard a lot of bad things about them. Thanks again. :)
sloan 02-21-2005, 05:00 PM PZelda...I would recommend brand names such as panasonic, pioneer (etc)
I would purchase a dvd recorder without the built in vhs. If one or the
other goes down you would be without your machine.
I purchased a pioneer 220s on ebay for $175.00 and I am very
pleased with the unit.

JMTapes 02-21-2005, 05:41 PM Definitely get just a standalone DVD recorder and hook a VCR up to it. I have a Philips that's about two years old, but it works great. In fact, they're SO much cheaper now, and have tons more features.
PZelda 02-21-2005, 05:58 PM Like I said before...I was considering stand-alone DVD recorders too. I will look into the Panasonic and Pioneer players - thanks, sloan!
Ahmed 02-21-2005, 06:24 PM Go for the jvc m-10. It is a great machine. I'd avoid phillips and panasonic, they actually add grain to the video.
Pioneer is a good machine too not as good as the jvc though

I'm looking for an unit that I can buy in-store...I don't want to buy it off eBay or anything like that. I know the Target and Walmart here have a DVD recorder section now...I'm not sure about the Kmart one, as I don't frequent that one.
Would the JVC one be available in one of those stores? I know Phillips, Sony and RCA are all available where I live. :)
Thanks again!
sloan 02-22-2005, 09:13 PM PZelda...the pioneer unit I have is avaliable at Walmart. In fact my
brother got one for $248.00 and they have a good return policy if you don't
like it.
Check epinions.com for reviews on dvd recorders. Another point to
consider... is one with a hardrive built in if that's within your budget.

Ahmed 02-22-2005, 09:56 PM not sure about in store; it is a quite popular unit.
$265-ecost. Is a good deal. It doesn't have a hard drive though. Other models in that range do but obviously cost more.
I either use it to transfer from vhs-dvd or if i use it to record i use rw media and rip the files to my hard drive on my PC edit out the commercials and then re-author with nice menus.
Again i would avoid Phillips and Panny's like the plague. Not sure about the sony.
PZelda 02-22-2005, 10:17 PM Thanks again!! You guys have really helped me! I will def. check out the HD options too. :) THey store your TV programs 'til you transfer them to DVD, am I correct? Just want to make sure.
sloan 02-23-2005, 12:18 AM Your welcome PZelda...let us know which one you get.

PZelda 02-24-2005, 06:54 PM I hit up Target today and they only had four kinds of recorders. Three were stand-alone and the other was a dual-deck.
Phillips
Model DVD615, $289.99 (only found 2 user reviews on epinions.com)
RCA
Model DRC8300N, $299.99 (the dual-deck one)
- Records DVD+R/+RW
Cyberhome
Model CH-DVR 1500, $179.99
- Records DVD+R/+RW
Memorex
Model DVDR2100, $249.99
- Records DVD+R/+RW
I'm going to look some more for user reviews...
sloan 02-24-2005, 07:29 PM Hi PZelda...is there a Walmart in your area. They may have a few more
options. I used my Pioneer 220 today and it worked great. It
is a great little recorder for the money.
Stay away from the cyberhome, my brother had one and it died
on him a few months ago.
Good luck,

Sounds good. So far, the Memorex one is the most appealing. Heh, must be because I have a Memorex DVD player too...I got mine in '02 and love it. :)
Yeah, there's a Walmart two blocks from Target. I'll hit up the Walmart later on, like this weekend or something.
Thanks again!

Just because they make a good player doesn't mean they make a good recorder! If you can't get the jvc definitely go for the pioneer.
PZelda 03-05-2005, 11:50 PM Okay, I finally got a DVD recorder. (standalone - not the VHS/DVD combo like I originally wanted)
So far, so good. I had no clue how to get the channels to show up on my DVD recorder, but I figured out it was because I didn't have my cable running to RF In and the signal going to my TV... I just have to figure/configure a few other things, and I'm good to go.
I want to set up my system so I can transfer my VHS tapes over to DVD...The instructions in my instruction booklet threw me off. Help, please? I'll probably eventually figure it out, but I just want to ask so that I have a definite answer. Thanks! :)
EDIT: figured it out, n/m
Brent88 03-06-2005, 04:32 PM The manual's are WAY too long for those things. I still haven't read all of mine and I've had it almost 3 months. :rotflmao: Mine's a combo though... until I get rid of my VHS.
PZelda 03-07-2005, 08:03 PM Mine wasn't too bad. I understood most of what it said...but there were a LOT of things in it that really confused me. I still haven't figured out how to title my DVD's or edit it...but I do know how to finalize them.
I ended up getting the Memorex, and I'm very happy with it. The only qualm I have with it is when I view store-brough DVD's and I'm fast-forwarding or rewinding thru it, the closed captioning disappears.
