Actress Sandra Dee Dead At 63

<LI>Was Reportedly Being Treated For Kidney Disease, Pneumonia

Feb 20, 2005 1:29 pm US/Pacific
LOS ANGELES (AP) Actress Sandra Dee, the blond beauty who attracted a large teen audience in the 1960s with films such as “Gidget” and “Tammy and the Doctor” and had a headlined marriage to pop singer Bobby Darin, died Sunday. She was 63.

Dee died at 5:57 a.m. at the Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, said Cynthia Mead, nursing supervisor.

Mead said Dee’s family requested that no other details be released. CNN reported that Dee had been undergoing treatment at the hospital for two weeks for complications of kidney disease and pneumonia.

At Universal Studio, Dee was cast mostly in teen movies such as “The Reluctant Debutante,” “The Restless Years,” “Tammy Tell Me True” and “Take Her She’s Mine.”

Occasionally, she was able to do secondary roles in other films, such as “Imitation of Life,” “A Portrait In Black” and “Romanoff and Juliet.”

After a one-month courtship, Dee married Bobby Darin in Elizabeth, N.J., in 1960. A son, Dodd Mitchell, was born to the couple the following year.

In 1965, with her divorce from Darin dampening her teen appeal, Dee was dropped by Universal.

“I thought they were my friends,” she said in an interview that year with The Associated Press, referring to her former bosses. “But I found out on the last picture (‘A Man Could Get Killed’) that I was simply a piece of property to them. I begged them not to make me do the picture, but they insisted.”

Born Alexandra Zuck in Bayonne, N.J., Dee became a model while in grade school.

Aww, That's sad. I never knew she was sick. I was just watching The Imitation of Life the other day where she plays Lana Turners daughter. She was really cute as an adolescent.

I must rather listen to "Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee!" from the "Grease" soundtrack. That's sad news. I have the movie "Gidget". It stars Sandra Dee as Gidget, long before Sally Field took the role in the TV version. I was recalled the episode of "Match Game" or "Match Game '82" that on the audience match, Gene Rayburn read "Sandra _______" and then Charles Nelson Reilly came up with the answer, "Sandra Dee". That's sad. RIP.:(

This saddens me. I thought she was a nice lady. She was a living doll when she was acting.

I never knew about her being sick, either. I watched her in Imitation of Life recently, too. This is sad news. Rest in peace, Sandra. :(

She was so adorable in her young years! I had Sandra Dee paper dolls way back in the late 50's . I really loved her!

I loved Sandra Dee! I knew she had been in ill health, but I was abit shocked to hear of her death. I read the book her son, Dodd, wrote some time ago about his parents. They both had strange and sad lives growing up. May they both rest in peace.

Wow...you know, Kate Bosworth really does look like her in that pic. I guess that was pretty good casting.

My mom came into my room and told me about it yesterday. I was really sorry to hear it, she was one cool lady. I saw an interview with her not that long ago, about the Bobby Darin film. She said he was the great love of her life. Really sad. I don't think she ever remarried. They were both very sweet people. Rest in peace, Alexandra Zuck :(
