All intendications are that when David Letterman decides to retire, his first choice to take over his show is Chris Rock?
The Late Show is Chris's job to take or turn down. If he turns it down, the next person on line is Jon Stewart.
In a few years, the late night wars could be Chris Rock vs Conan O'Brian. If that ever happens, that would be great for late night tv.

What intendications make you say that? Has Letterman said publicly that he'd like Chris Rock to replace him? That wouldn't be the best move for Chris Rock, he's at his best doing stand-up. If Jon Stewart takes over, Chris should do the Daily Show where he has the chance to joke about current events and social issues, that's where he shines. Interviewing guests isn't Chris' strong suit.

I like Chris Rock a lot, but agree with Vash, I don't think he would work well on a typical talk show.
A little OT, but I thought I should add....
is it just me or does it seem like Letterman will break Carson's 30-year record??
Chris Rock has guest hosted the Late Show a few times when Letterman was sick. They wanted Chris to host the Late Late Show, but he turned it down.
I think CBS need Chris or Jon to take over when Letterman does step down. Who knows when that will be, I don't know about Johnny's record, but I think Dave wants to still be on the air, when Leno leaves in 09.
If CBS does not get Chris or Jon, they don't stand a chance aganst Conan.
