Hola!
I wonder why "What's Happening" had three obese actors in the show? I have never seen another show before or since portray people like this.
What other shows had fat folks on it?

That crossed my mine too over the past few years. The thing that I'm getting is that the producers and writers probably saw it as a way to get more laughs. I felt bad for Mabel King. Her character was positive and serious, and occasionally, she was the butt of a fat joke.

I remember a few episodes where she hugged her kids and they acted like she was trying to kill them. I guess it was supposed to be funny, but I didn't think it was.

..and how much of a coincidence that they're all dead. Rerun, Mabel, and Shirley.

Even though Ms King was a heavy woman. I thought she had a very beautiful face and you could tell that she had a lovely soul. Definitely an excellent actress and one of my faves on What's Happening!! :)
