View Full Version : The Gates Of Central Park
Hey kids, TJL here, your roving NYC photographer...
This week I took some pics of the massive Gates exhibit that has literally taken over Central Park. If you haven't heard about this, Christo and Jean Claude, husband and wife artists assebled this huge project, 7500 of these brightly coloerd gates are along all the paths in the park. It's pretty cool to see.
Here are a few pictures. I hope to get some more before the gates are taken down next week.
Mysty Eyes 02-18-2005, 11:34 AM Are they all the same color? I remember seeing on the news about all of those umbrellas several years ago. That involved two colors; but then it involved two countries as well. Is this just NYC? One color?
Superstar 02-18-2005, 12:05 PM that looks really cool

Yep. all the gates are orange (or saphron, depending who you talk to)
the official Central Park website has a link that explains the project, and a cool satellite photo of the park.

Steve M. 02-18-2005, 01:22 PM I might go and see them early next week.

Stormtracker TF 02-18-2005, 01:53 PM Am I the only one who finds those things absolutely hideous?
Nice pictures though, TJL.

Nope, you're not alone. I have never much liked these Christo displays of "art." This is no different. I don't understand the appeal.
Oh well. :p

I don't really care for them. They look like sheets being hung out to dry on clothelines. I'm missing the symbolism. Great pics though TJL. Hand the camera to a tourist and put yourself in a few photos.

The gates have recieved some criticism from folks in the op/ed sections of the papers.
I don't consider myself an art lover, but at least it's something interesting to look at.
The artist paid for it all by themselves (20 million plus, including the overtime paid to the NYPD) and the city is reporting a tremendous spike in tourist revenue from visitors coming to see it.
Who knows if it really is "art," but I kinda like it.
MissZero 02-18-2005, 05:59 PM those are ridiculous....its funny how they spent 26 years of their lives planning for something as pathetic as that.
Pitooey 02-18-2005, 08:05 PM Well as for me I really like it. I love art.
In the picture TJL (The 1st one) I noticed a black dog looking up and probably saying to itself... (What the heck is this). LOL.......
Warm & Fuzzy 02-18-2005, 08:25 PM Funny you took pictures of them today!! I was gonna go there after school! But, it was FREEEZZZZING, so I went home, instead. Hehe. I intend to go there either tomorrow or Sunday, tho. I actually think this is pretty cool. But that's just me. Tho, honestly.... I could've thought of that!!! Here's some pics of central park I took several weeks ago without the orange 'drapes' LOL!

Warm & Fuzzy 02-18-2005, 08:29 PM Sorry... a little off-topic, but I wanted to share this with you, TJL, LOL. Can't believe it's Manhattan, ayy? Sunset at Battery Park. I swear they weren't altered in any way. Unbelievable!

NEW YORK (AP) - Artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude told delegates from around the world who toured "The Gates" in Central Park that they want people to think of their projects as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
"We love these words: Once upon a time there was 'The Gates' in Central Park. Once in a lifetime and never again," Jeanne-Claude said at a reception Thursday for "sister city" delegates at the Boathouse in Central Park.
She said the special aesthetic quality flowing through "The Gates" and their other projects is "love and tenderness," borne out of the works' temporary nature.
About 100 delegates from Beijing; Budapest, Hungary; Cairo, Egypt; Jerusalem; Johannesburg, South Africa; London; Madrid, Spain; Rome; Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; and Tokyo made the trip as part of the Sister City Program of the City of New York.

The 16-day public art installation, which ends Feb. 27, features 7,500 gates of saffron-colored fabric swaying in the breeze along 23 miles of the park's footpaths.
"It creates a space for your imagination. It really does look like a river of light," said one delegate, Steven Sacks, Johannesburg's director of arts and culture. "It interacts with you."
The artists are known worldwide for their monumental temporary works of art, which include surrounding 11 islands in Miami with pink woven fabric in 1982, wrapping silver fabric around the German Reichstag in 1995 and opening 3,100 umbrellas in Japan and California in 1991.
The delegates, composed of cultural and civic leaders, were amused by Christo's description of how he and Jeanne-Claude scouted out the park for just the right placement of the fabric-draped frames. "We walked 100 miles and went through three pairs of shoes to pinpoint the place where each gate would be good," Christo told the gathering. "It's a human project. All our projects are very dynamic. They stir emotion because of the cloth."

Warm & Fuzzy 02-19-2005, 10:07 PM Hey, TJL, I went to Central Park today! There were sooo many people there! And I took a couple......dozen pictures, LOL. It was actually a pretty interesting experience. I liked it, but as a temporary thing only. If it were permanent, then I would say no. But I think it's pretty cool. And I thought the volunteers holding the sticks with tennis balls mounted on them were hilarious LOL. Know what I'm talking about? Anyway...Pics!

Great pics. Very nice job. I like the bridge one. Where was that taken? I'm hoping to get a few more before they take them down. I want to frame up a series of pictures for my apartment.
I did see the folks in the green vests with thier tennis ball lances (LOL) i watched two of them trying to free a cutain that got wrapped up because of the wind. I wanted to grab a pole from thier hands and do it myself.

TheHappyBurgerMeister 02-20-2005, 01:21 AM I think they're really cool. Orange is like my favorite color. I think you really have to appreciate that kind of art to like them.
Too bad I can't see them in person since I live in Wisconsin.
Are they a permanant thing? maybe someday I can see them.

Are they a permanant thing? maybe someday I can see them. No, they are only temporary. I like it too, and I appreciate it as well. Hehe. They will be taken down Feb 27th, I believe. It's a two week exhibition. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
It's supposed to snow here in NYC tonight. Maybe I'll trek out to the park tomorrow to get some shots of the gates in the snow.

YES. I AGREE. lol I live in New Jersey, only about 45 minutes from NYC and my mom made us go up there to see them when they first put them up (because my brother, who lives there, was telling us how nice they were) and we got there and we were like .... is this it ...? Haha idk, they're very ordinary looking to me and I see nothing very special about them.
