View Full Version : Do You Like To Bowl?
Janice 02-16-2005, 11:07 AM I don't hear bowling mentioned much these days. It was very popular when I was a young teen and adult in the 70s and 80s. It was a cool 'date thing' to do.
I was pretty good at bowling, but not great. I only liked bowling with small balls and hated the big ones.
My husband bowled for years on league in his work. He was a very good bowler.
Has bowling gone out of style?
peter may 02-16-2005, 11:24 AM yeh i enjoy it

I like to bowl; it's been a long time since I played. I can play with either the small balls and/or the big ones. I play for fun; not to win.
Shelley 02-16-2005, 11:37 AM I love to bowl for fun. I am not only very good at it.
Ags2000 02-16-2005, 11:42 AM I LOVE bowling. I was in a league when I was younger. I have a trophy for high series, high game, and high average. I also have a BUNCH of patches including a "I beat my coach" badge which I won the game I got high series. :D
D
swedeace 02-16-2005, 12:06 PM Yes, I LOVE bowling! I usually go bowling with a group of friends. It's not that often, but I enjoy it. :)
Steve M. 02-16-2005, 12:11 PM YES! I love it! :) Unfortunately, my local alley was demolished to make way for a new Walgreens! But there are a couple of other alleys nearby.
Georgia's on my Mind 02-16-2005, 12:14 PM surprisingly yes, actually i am quite a good bowler.
Dutabi84 02-16-2005, 12:15 PM I'm positively the worst bowler on the planet...but yeah, it's pretty fun.
robyrob 02-16-2005, 12:40 PM i'm still banned from all the bowling alleys in town, but I used to have fun at it - maybe a little TOO much fun.
PZelda 02-16-2005, 12:40 PM I enjoy bowling :) I do it for fun, not for the competition. I'm pretty average, I can break 100 every time I go bowling.
Unfortunately, I haven't been in a while...Maybe 2003 or early 2004?
GARFIELDKOOL 02-16-2005, 01:33 PM I don't bowl all the time, but when I do, I find it fun and relaxing.
Chad22 02-16-2005, 02:29 PM I Enjoy it Although I Don't do it that often.
Hollow 02-16-2005, 02:58 PM i'm still banned from all the bowling alleys in town, but I used to have fun at it - maybe a little TOO much fun.
in 8th grade i got kicked out of the bowling alley for running down the lane after my ball and screaming "NOOOOOOO MY BABY!!!!!" i got kicked out again the next week because i kept bowling it light enough for it to stop in the middle of the lane and making the staff go get it every time. oh well, we were just going there every week for PE so i didnt care.
Nighthawk76 02-16-2005, 04:33 PM I like to bowl. I'm not very good at it, but I do like to bowl from time to time. It's still a popular sport here in Illinois.
Janet McFarland 02-16-2005, 05:23 PM I love bowling. My friend used to take me on Sundays when there was a deal on a certain number of games, so that was cool. I have no idea if I'm good or not, but I don't care. I bowl for fun ;)
Mr. Television 02-16-2005, 05:28 PM I like to bowl but I haven't done it in a long time.
Fleet 02-16-2005, 05:32 PM Yes, I used to bowl about 20 years ago. I took "bowling" as a physical activity in college (you were required to take one kind of physical-type class).
I wasn't a great bowler- my average was around 130 and my record was 172.
These days, I prefer more strenuous exercise like hiking and bicycling (and soccer & volleyball at work).
BTW, a local bowling alley is now a Ralphs market.

I get in trouble at the bowling alley all the time 'cause I roll the ball while the thing that takes the pins away is still down cause the machine gives you a strike and I must win.

I don't think I want to know...
dawsongirl 02-16-2005, 10:49 PM I grew up in a real bowling family. My great grandma bowled in league until she was 90, plus she was like, the president or something of the whole women's city council (the bowling city council). My grandma and grandpa bowled. My dad and uncles bowled. My dad managed the local alley for years. My uncle has bowled several 800s and a few 300s. When we buried my great grandma, he put one of his 800 rings in with her. My mom and dad bowled in league the same night and I spent tons of my life in a smoky bowling alley.
I enjoy it, but haven't done it for years. It's just ridiculously expensive. $3 to rent a pair of shoes?!
dawsongirl 02-16-2005, 10:53 PM in 8th grade i got kicked out of the bowling alley for running down the lane after my ball and screaming "NOOOOOOO MY BABY!!!!!" i got kicked out again the next week because i kept bowling it light enough for it to stop in the middle of the lane and making the staff go get it every time. oh well, we were just going there every week for PE so i didnt care.
We bowled in PE too. It was sweet cuz sometimes they gave us bumpers. Plus we could buy pop and crap.
I used to bowl a lot when I was a kid, (last time i bowled regularly was high school intramurals) but then I stopped for a long time.
Funny story - a few years ago a friend of mine had a big bowling party at one of the alleys here in NYC. Her boyfriend was a regular bowler, and was bragging about how much he played blah blah blah.
The first game I bowled a 200 or something and trounced his score.
He was so pissed. He didn't believe that I hadn't bowled in over a decade.
Since then I have bowled a handful of times and I still do pretty well. I don't understand how. I guess it's the shoes or something...

An overhand throw or a high arc underhand delivery will get you thrown out of a bowling alley as well. Also, for some reason trying to bowl from the seating area is a big no-no.
;)
Belair 02-17-2005, 12:02 AM My mum is a champion bowler, she has all these trophies.
Me,i dont really enjoy it.I am a shocking bowler, and i get bored really quickly, because all my balls end up off the lane. The people i am bowling with usually have a good laugh.
crystals 02-17-2005, 01:49 AM I don't care for bowling too much. I used to bowl quite a bit when I was a kid, but over the years I just kind of grew out of it. I haven't been bowling since high school and I didn't even bowl that much back then. Just in physed class. I remember the first time my high school physed class went bowling and I bowled a strike on my first day. After that I never bowled a strike again. Not that I ever cared. I'm not a huge fan of bowling. My phsyed teacher also gave the class quizes on all the different sports stuff we did. Pretty much everything: golf, racquet ball, etc. The quizes included bowling, too. I thought, great, as if I'm not bored with bowling enough already, I have to write a quiz on it.
*MIBabe03* 02-17-2005, 09:45 AM Eh, I'm not a fan.
Superstar 02-17-2005, 03:48 PM it can be fun

Dude111 08-03-2023, 10:43 AM Ya I remember going to this bowling alley and they had a descrambler in there to get all the pay channels. I left the owner a note asking where I could get one...... He didnt answer but the next time I went,he had removed the descrambler :( (I guess I scared him)
Torgo 08-03-2023, 12:59 PM See the other bowling thread for my answer.
Yong Fang 08-06-2023, 06:14 AM My father never bowled so I never really learned. When I was in high school in the early 1980’s there was a huge 1950’s style bowling alley in our city and I and my friend used to go there. To my chagrin, it is no longer there, it was torn down for a Planet Fitness! Never quite understood, it was a working class area of the city and working class people like to bowl. But apparently it lost money and there it went.
But thing about it is, we mostly played in the arcade room which had several good pinball machines. Pinball is my passion. If I lived in America and lived a free life would be heavily involved in the pinball community going to events, sales and tournaments. Problem is now I am in my 50’s and past my prime, but that’s natural. Maybe there is an over 50 league but if I get warmed up, can play anyone. It makes me happy that pinball has had a renaissance and now young people are picking up the game.
I did roll a few games there however with my buddies. I wasn’t very good because I never learned the technique. Never did. To me it’s a ball, hit the pins on the end! I remember the last time I bowled, it was in China about 15 years ago. I had a good friend who was African and some other people up there and laughed his ass off and made fun of me for the way I bowled. My failed technique, pick up the lightest ball and throw it down the lane!
