I can't wait either. This is one of my ALL-TIME favorite series, especially after the first season. But I'm looking forward to it all

It's one of my all time favs. Thanks to Oxygen Network I've gotten hooked on it :) Whitley and Dwayne are so cute together :)

I must say I think it's a better show than the Cosby Show, not that the Cosby Show is completely terrible, I just found TCS boring

It looks like the A Different World season 1 dvd won't be coming out this August like it was originally reported. We now have to wait until January 2006. But the good news is that the distributing company has rights to all six seasons so it sounds good that the complete series will eventually be released.

From the press release:

March 21, 2005 - Thousand Oaks, CA - Ventura Entertainment and Carsey-Werner distribution, the pre-eminent independent studio in the television industry, announced today an agreement to bring "The Cosby Show" and "A Different World" to DVD. The inaugural release will be "The Cosby Show - Season 1" slated for an August 2, 2005 street date followed by "A Different World - Season 1" in January, 2006. Under the terms of the multi-year, multi-title agreement, Ventura has licensed the rights to all eight seasons of "The Cosby Show," as well as all six seasons of "A Different World." Both shows will be released through Ventura's in-house label, UrbanWorks.

The Emmy-nominated "A Different World" debuted as the #1 new show of the season, staying at #1 in its time period for the first five seasons of a six-season run, achieving the highest first-season household rating in the 1980s and 1990s.

"We are extremely excited to work with Carsey-Werner to bring these classic TV properties to DVD," said Jeff Clanagan, president, UrbanWorks Entertainment. "By combining UrbanWorks' expertise in marketing and distribution, along with each of the show's tremendous fan appeal, we are certain that the two series will be extremely successful."

A Different World
Originally planned to be a spin-off to The Cosby Show, A Different World made its debut in 1987 and ended production in 1993. Starring Jasmine Guy (Whitley), Kadeem Hardison (Dwayne), Dawn Lewis (Jaleesa), Lisa Bonet (Denise), and others, A Different World was set at the historically black Hillman College and chronicled the struggles to make it through college.

That sucks-January?! :( Maybe they were afraid of releasing them at the same time for fear that the Cosby Show might hinder the sales of A Different World?

I think I'm only buying the first and last season on DVD since I'm a crossover fan. I don't like the show enough to OWN all the seasons on DVD

does anyone have any word as of yet about what extras Urbanworks has planned for the DVD for season, and better yet, if we're going to see the uncut episodes this time around instead of the Oxygen edits like we did for Cosby Show (which I couldn't bring myself to buying today because of the edits).

Not the most attractive cover they could've come up with. Hopefully the episodes will be unedited.

Are there any extra features? Commentary?

Are there any extra features? Commentary?

Special features include:
Cast interviews
Out-takes
A retrospective overview of the series with cast members
An un-aired, "lost" episode featuring the legendary Tupac Shakur and Jada Pinkett-Smith

That "lost" episode should just be included on the season 6 dvd, if it gets that far. That episode airs along with season 6 episodes in syndication.

Thanks for the cover art, it's not the best, but it's good :) Great extras, wow I can't believe ADW got better extras than the Cosby Show DVD did

The episodes better be uncut

the cast order on the cover has no rhyme or reason. If they were going alphabetically like some ensemble cast shows and movies do, Darryl M. Bell being first makes sense, but yet Sinbad comes second. I can understand distancing Bonet from the top because she wasn't associated with the show after season 1 although starring in season 1, but you'd think Jasmine and Kadeem would be mentioned on the set before Sinbad.

It looks like the set will be in a case that holds 4 discs. Not as good as slimcases but better than a digipack like Cosby IMO.

Let's just hope Urbanworks has learned their lesson from Cosby and has everything taken care of to make ADW worth owning on DVD, I prefer watching ADW at this age anyways.
