View Full Version : Shops and Stores in Mayfield: A List
miss landers 02-15-2005, 04:23 PM How many shops and stores in Mayfield can you recall? List them here. Try to include something about the episode (name, number, background, etc.) for reference.
Foster's was a department store or a shoe store. In a late episode Ward took Beaver to Foster's for a new pair of sneakers. This might also be the store where Beaver took Chucky for his new shoes.
Tilden's was a sporting goods shop where Beaver bought his monster sweatshirt.
The C & J Supermarket. Beaver skipped school and went to the grocery store for a free candy bar. He was seen on TV by Wally and June.
Mijada 02-15-2005, 07:24 PM There was that hunting store where the boys bought Ward that new hunting jacket. I think it was called Abernathy & ???. can't remember. There was the pet shop where the kids had to guess how many fish were in the tank. Don't remember the name of that one either.

2 pet stores: Allen's, where Ward rented 'Sgt. Burke,' the parrot, for Beaver; and Parker's, where Eddie went to work and ruined "The Big Fish Count."

The store's name was Abernathy Potts. June remined Ward that the boys usually go to Henny's Hardware Store for their sporting goods. Ward says that Abernathy Potts "sells the most expensive sporting goods in town."

miss landers 03-05-2005, 01:47 AM In "Beaver Plays Hooky" Wally asks his mom if he can get a tattoo. That suggests to me there was a tattoo parlor in Mayfield. Where else would Wally expect to get a tattoo - through the mail?
Mark B. 03-05-2005, 09:46 AM How about the super market in 'hookie'- I saw it last night but I can't remember the name- it was two letters like 'c&s supermarket'

It was the C & J Supermarket. Here's a pic of the A & P about 1953.
Mark B. 03-05-2005, 02:29 PM Ah yes, that was it! I remember A&P stores here in Florida. I also remember S&H Greenstamps stores- ring a bell?

A & P stood for Atlantic and Pacific and the store created a Betty Crocker-like figure called Ann Page (from the A & P) to sell the store brands. The store's own dinner rolls were called "Ann Page Brown an' Serve Dinner Rolls" for instance. I wonder what the C & J stood for in Beaver's supermarket? Hmm. And yes, I remember the S & H Greenstamps stores. My mom saved them and, as a kid I thought those little green stamps were as wonderful as real postage stamps! I remember stopping with mom one day at the redemption store. Mom got a metal picnic cooler. The sides of the cooler had a red and black plaid design. A woody looking border ran around the sides and corners. So cute. Mom had that picnic cooler around the house for decades and I do remember the family using it on camping trips during the summers.
miss landers 03-14-2005, 02:48 AM Kirby's - the department store where June bought the Eskimo sweater that Beaver got rid of by stuffing it behind the candy machine in the movie theater.
miss landers 03-15-2005, 11:30 PM A dance studio - Wally learned the cha cha there before the dance contest at the country club with Mary Ellen. There was also a dance school where Wally, Beaver, and Larry went for instruction as youngsters. It was a "Miss Something-or-Other's Dance School."
miss landers 03-15-2005, 11:31 PM Sutter's - a jewelry store (possibly) where June stopped as a 9 year old girl to look at an opal ring.
Coffeecup 03-18-2005, 10:41 PM We had a A & P. It left our area about 10 years ago. In the buiilding now is a Walgreens.
miss landers 03-24-2005, 11:55 PM In the eps. about Beaver loaning Larry 75 cents (Beaver Makes a Loan), Beaver spots Larry in "Gilbert's Pharmacy" having a soda with Gilbert and Whitey after Larry promised to pay Beaver back the money he'd borrowed.
miss landers 03-26-2005, 08:17 AM Beaver and Larry bought a magic trick in "Uncle Artie's Magic Shop" in the episode about the boys tricking Bengie Bellamy by turning Beaver into a rock.
miss landers 03-29-2005, 05:10 AM Sgt. Burke the talking parrot was Beaver's pet in "The Pet Fair." Ward "rented" the bird at "Allen's Pet Store."
