Web's bubble trouble
Modestly rated vets may be in danger of cancellation
By JOSEF ADALIAN
(Variety.com)-The bubble may be about to burst on a number of long-running network shows -- and, believe it or not, the women of Desperate Housewives may be partly to blame.
ABC's runaway hit -- along with the Alphabet's Lost, NBC's Medium, Fox's House and CBS' Numbers -- has some network execs suddenly bullish about the state of scripted TV.
In particular, webheads are starting to believe that being bold can pay off -- leaving less room for modestly performing vets with relatively big production pricetags.
As a result, shows that a year ago would have been shoo-ins for renewal -- think 8 Simple Rules HD, Bernie Mac HD, Third Watch HD or 60 Minutes Wednesday -- find themselves on the bubble, teetering between renewal and cancellation.
"People right now think conditions are ripe for getting a hit," one insider says. "When you're coming off a season like this, in which there are a few smash hits, that boosts everyone's collective optimism."
Most encouraging is the fact that ABC -- a network with one foot in the grave a year ago -- has had the most luck finding hits this year. Competing nets with far stronger underlying skeds are now pondering whether it might be time to clear out the cobwebs and roll the dice on some newcomers.
"What's been proven this year is that it's not a fait accompli that ratings for the networks have to go down every year," says one network suit.
The nets have already cleared some shelf space for next season.
Everybody Loves Raymond HD and NYPD Blue HD started the year knowing the end was in sight. More recently, UPN's Star Trek: Enterprise HD and the WB's Grounded for Life have had their exits cast in stone.
Other veterans that will have to fight their way back for another year (in addition to the ones mentioned above) include Judging Amy HD, Third Watch HD, JAG HD, the CBS Sunday Movie HD and American Dreams. HD
ABC's The Bachelor will likely be back, but probably won't air as often. King of the Hill episodes will air next season, but the show might also end up with a much shorter season than usual.
As with most things in network TV, however, money plays a key role in deciding the fate of a veteran skeinskein.
"Unless you can pull a Boston Legal, shows usually don't get cheaper as they go deeper," one web wag observes, noting that cast and writer salary bumps can add millions to a show's budget. At the same time costs soar, ratings almost always dip.
"You look at the time period and say, 'Am I losing money or making money?' " the exec adds.
While it's true that most new shows actually end up scoring lower numbers than the skeins they replaced, the frosh series often cost a hell of a lot less.
"If you sacrifice two-tenths of a ratings point but the new show is $2 million cheaper, then you've done well," the web suit says.
In a perfect world, nets would make decisions on bubble shows right now. That way, producers could pen appropriate finales, while network marketing machines could crank up the hype and start signaling the long goodbye (remember NBC's never-ending swan song for Friends?).
But shows that look old and haggard in February -- when nets are giddy with anticipation over their "best development season ever"-- can seem a lot shinier come May after several promising pilots have crashed and burned.
"Quite often, there's a show that everyone thought was dead, and come May, you're standing at the scheduling board and you're literally a half-hour or hour short," says one scheduling guru. "We shrug and say, 'We thought we wouldn't need it,' and then you reach for the old show and put it on the board."
Pavan 02-14-2005, 11:38 AM It wouldn't hurt emailing them, but I am not too worried. The show has picked up steam ever since the weather got a bit colder. It did get off to a slow start in September and October, but it has picked up since about mid-November and has done very well here in early 2005. So well, that ABC has picked up 2 more episodes, when originally ABC was going to end the season early.
Article from the Hollywood Reporter:
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - CBS has picked up four additional episodes of the crime drama "Numbers," bringing the total order for the midseason entrant to 12 episodes.
Following a big debut after the AFC Championship Game, drawing the largest audience for a drama series premiere in 10 years, the Rob Morrow-David Krumholtz starrer "Numbers" has cooled off after moving to its regular Friday 10 p.m. slot but still easily ranked as the top program for the night in its first two airings.
ABC, meanwhile, has ordered two more segments of "8 Simple Rules," bringing the total for the third-season comedy to 24. The show, starring Katey Sagal, has held its ground as the 8 p.m. anchor of ABC's Friday comedy block this season.

Superbowl 02-14-2005, 01:03 PM I hate to tell you, but you are wrong. The ratings declined a lot this week. It was ABC's lowest rated show on Friday night. It finished third in the 18-49 category when it was # 2 for quite some time. Hope & Faith and Less Than Perfect are now beating the show. Look here from Marc Berman's Program Insider for Friday 2/11 shows :
-Ratings Breakdown:
In a Friday of three-way leadership, CBS and NBC were tied for first in households, CBS was No. 1 in total viewers, and ABC held the top spot among adults 18-49. In particularly concerning news for CBS, Joan of Arcadia opened the evening at record-low ratings for an original telecast, with a 5.2/ 9 in households (#2), 7.38 million viewers (#3) and a fourth-place 1.8/ 6 among adults 18-49. First in the hour was NBC's Dateline (HH: 6.9/12; Viewers: 9.66 million; A18-49: 2.4/ 7), with two episodes of ABC's 8 Simple Rules (original and repeat) averaging a typical 5.1/ 9 in households (#3), 7.76 million viewers (#2), and a 2.3/ 8 (#3) among adults 18-49. If ABC wants to make inroads on Friday next season, it should consider opening the evening with Supernanny, which will lose its Monday 10 p.m. time period to football and could be an attraction for young adults, teens and kids.
Also in the 8 p.m. hour were two episodes (original and repeat) of Fox's Bernie Mac (HH: #4, avg. 3.4/ 6; Viewers: #4, avg. 5.40 million; A18-49: #3, avg. 2.3/ 8), the WB's What I Like About You (HH: #5, 2.1/ 4; Viewers: #5, 3.11 million; A18-49: #5, 1.5/ 5) and A Scooby Doo Valentine (HH: #5, 1.9/ 3; Viewers: #5, 3.22 million; A18-49: #5, 1.2/ 4), and UPN's soon-to-conclude Star Trek: Enterprise (HH: #6, 1.7/ 3; Viewers: #6, 2.75 million; A18-49: #6, 1.1/ 3).
At 9 p.m., CBS' veteran JAG (HH: #6.4/11; Viewers: 9.41 million; A18-49: 1.9/ 6) won the hour in households and total viewers but ranked third among adults 18-49. First in the demo were ABC sitcoms Hope & Faith (HH: #3, 5.7/10; Viewers: #3, 8.56 million; A18-49: #1, 3.0/ 9) and Less Than Perfect (HH: #3, 5.4/ 9; Viewers: #3, 7.89 million; A18-49: #1, 2.9/ 8). On NBC, Third Watch scored a typically modest 6.3/10 in households (#3), 9.07 million viewers (#3) and a 2.7/ 8 among adults 18-49 (#3). Fourth overall in the hour in households and fifth in viewers and adults 18-49 was Fox drama Jonny Zero (HH: 2.7/ 4; Viewers: 4.18 million; A18-49: 1.8/ 5). On the WB, although Reba at 9 p.m. remained consistent with a 3.1/ 5 in households (#4), 5.22 million viewers (#4) and a 2.2/ 6 among adults 18-49 (#4), soon-to-relocate lead-out Blue Collar TV sprung a leak, dipping to No. 5 in households (2.1/ 4), total viewers (3.73 million) and adults 18-49 (1.5/ 4) at 9:30 p.m. Retention for Blue Collar TV out of Reba was a disappointing 68 percent in households, 72 percent in viewers and 68 percent among adults 18-49.
I am encouraging everyone who likes 8 Simple Rules to write ABC. Believe me, the show is in trouble for renewal.

The way the negotiations are going Monday Night Football might be on ESPN next year, so Supernanny could still be on Monday.
Superbowl 02-14-2005, 06:19 PM I think MNF will stay on ABC. My personal feeling is that ABC will cancel some of their sitcoms to make room for other shows. 8 SR is now at the bottom of the heap for their sitcoms, and this could be trouble. Send off those e-mails it certainly cannot hurt.
Pavan 02-14-2005, 07:22 PM I think Rodney and Less Than Perfect are more likely to be gone than 8 Simple Rules. ABC had much better ratings when they tried George Lopez at 9:30 after According to Jim. Less Than Perfect had its highest ratings this past week and it was the ONLY time it had a higher rating than 8SR this season.
katefandream04 02-14-2005, 07:44 PM It won't be cancelled....if ABC gave two episodes, then it will give the show a chance.
Miss Golden 02-14-2005, 08:26 PM I think Less than Perfect will not make a Season 4. It is stuck at 9:30 on Friday Nights, and that is not good for a third year show. It really never has gotten the attention that 8 Simple Rules or Hope and Faith has gotten.
TVJunkie101 02-14-2005, 09:16 PM I don't think 8 Simple Rules will be cancelled at all. If anything, it'll get one more year to make syndication, LOL.
It still does well.
Unless ABC has stellar sitcom pilots, I think Less Than Perfect has a shot at coming back. I think it's an underrated show, imo.
Superbowl 02-14-2005, 11:20 PM Well, the already have the new John Stamos (I believe it is called Jake in Progress) that is set to premiere in March. ABC is promoting the hell out of it. You see promos for it every 10 minutes. I think that show is a lock for the fall schedule unless the ratings are terrible in March. It will premiere around Desperate Housewifes so I am sure the ratings will be very, very good. So that is one spot already gone.
Look, I really hope you are all correct. I want the show renewed. Send some e-mails to ABC anyway. It wouldn't hurt if we let them know we want the show.

I know the fourth year of a show is necessary for syndicattion. I am just wondering is it possible to syndicate 8 Simple Rules with John Ritter in the first 30 shows and then he dies. It would be very ackward once they show the 100 shows, and then go back to the beginning and John Ritter is in it again. Wouldn't it ? Anybody have opinions on this ?

Other shows have been syndicated where an actor has died in it and I never felt awkward watching it. The only difference here is that JR was the main character.

Yeah, I actually would like to see the John Ritter shows again. It would be a great honor to him to have him live on in this show. I always enjoyed watching him. I was just wondering if other viewers would object to seeing him in the show.
Ritterfan98 02-15-2005, 11:05 AM I would love if 8SR would show the repeats with John in it! I would like him to be honored not forgotten. They don't even mention him anymore!!

I totally agree. It would be a great honor for John Ritter. I would like to see the show in syndication just to at least see the John Ritter episodes.

Superbowl 02-15-2005, 05:45 PM I hate to say it, but this could be more trouble for 8 Simple Rules. I have always thought that ABC would cancel a few of their sitcoms from this year to make room for new shows. Unfortunately this show could be one of them.
ABC's Head Over Heels for Prinze
A comedy pilot starring Freddie Prinze Jr. has received a green light from ABC.
The pilot, which Prinze co-wrote and is executive producing as well, is about a successful single guy who was raised in a houseful of women. His life takes an unexpected turn when said women move back in with him.
Should the pilot make it onto ABC's schedule, it would be Prinze's first regular role in a TV series. He would also be following in the footsteps of his father, Freddie Prinze, who starred in NBC's "Chico and the Man" in the mid-1970s.
Prinze wrote the script for the pilot with Bruce Helford ("The Drew Carey Show"), Bruce Rasmussen (also a "Drew" alum) and Conrad Jackson, the Hollywood trade papers report. Helford, Rasmussen and Deborah Oppenheimer join Prinze as exec producers, and veteran director John Pasquin ("Roseanne," "Home Improvement") will helm the pilot.
After beginning his career with a guest spot on "Family Matters," Prinze has starred in "I Know What You Did Last Summer," "She's All That," "Head Over Heels" and the two "Scooby-Doo" movies with his wife, Sarah Michelle Gellar. He's also logged guest appearances on ABC's "Boston Legal" this season, playing the son of William Shatner's Denny Crane

Their are always comedy pilots being made though. I think Less Then Perfect is more of a border show then 8 Simple Rules, plus My Wife And Kids ratings have been falling this year. It would just be a shame to cancel this show when its so close to having enough shows for syndication.
Raisingdad2004 02-16-2005, 06:11 AM That new comedy does not sound particularly TGIF-ish :p Most likely a Monday or Tuesday show.

My Wife and Kids and George Lopez are completely safe for next year. They are both going into syndication and the network needs more episodes. They also were doing well in the ratings until American Idol debuted. I think the network will give those shows a pass, because they did well pre-American Idol competition.

While I also think GLo and My Wife & Kids are also safe, they were not doing that great before American Idol, either. Both shows were scoring in the 5 rating range. That is the same range for 8 Simple Rules, and it airs on less rated night--Friday. Now both score in the low 4 range. I think Rodney (even though it scores well after Jim, but doesn't hold enough of what ABC would want) and Less Than Perfect are more likely to be gone after this season. I do think that Tuesdays at 8pm next year will not be comedies, since American Idol always kills the comedies at 8-9pm every season. Most likely a new drama/returning reality will be on, but for sure 9-10pm will be comedies, with According to Jim and something else (I say George Lopez).
And Touchstone is selling 8 Simple Rules for syndication, for fall 2007. That might play a huge role for 8 Simple Rules returning next season (as the show will have reached 100 episodes sometime next season). As the John Ritter episodes have not been seen in a long time in the U.S., it will be available for syndication. The ratings would be great, too.
My Wife & Kids has already been sold for syndication, it starts this fall, and has more than enough episodes. George Lopez is not available until fall 2007, too, but it is already being sold.

I am curious, is this a fact that Touchstone is selling 8 Simple Rules for syndication for Fall 2007 or just your own idea ? If they are going to syndicate they would probably need a fourth season. I would also love to see the John Ritter episodes once again. Are they already selling the syndication for Fall 2007 ? Are you sure ?
Thanks

Thanks, that could be good news for 8 Simple Rules. I believe you need 100 episodes for syndication. That means they would need another year for production. :D
Lor3nzo 02-18-2005, 01:08 PM from what I was told they only need 80, I also seen it on Dennis Miller when Kaley was on the show so they are getting close so lets keep our fingers crossed.

They will only have 76 episodes at the end of this year, so they would probably need a 4th season if they are going to syndicate the show.
Pavan 02-18-2005, 05:35 PM And this "rumor" about the season finale on April 1 is not true. I have seen ABC's March listings and so far there is only one new episode.
March 4 - both episodes are reruns ("Changes" and "School Nurse")
March 11 - "The After Party" new episode and "Old Flame" rerun episode
March 18 - both episodes are TBD reruns
March 25 - 8pm TBD (so far Complete Savages is slated for 8:30pm, but that could change)

Yeah, That guy just thought he was being smart counting the no. of weeks and episodes. I did also hear a rumor that, along with the next 4 episodes will be 4 re-runs ("4 fridays of re-runs"), so they will air over the next 8 weeks.

I guess this means that Complete Savages is just about done. I think it also means that ABC likes the idea of 8 Simple Rules as a better lead in for Hope and Faith. I noticed Hope and Faith's ratings has picked up since ABC started running 8 Simple Rules at 8:30.

Complete Savages was cancelled a couple of weeks ago and production was shut down, was it not?
katefandream04 02-21-2005, 12:56 PM I've heard about that,not sure though.

Just pulled from the schedule, as of now (if ABC does not change their minds) 19 episodes of the series will air, (another 5 episodes to air). So after that, .
In other news rumors have beeing spreading in the UK, that Teen Station "Trouble" is to purchase the rights to air the show on Sattelite and Cable.
Brent88 02-21-2005, 10:45 PM The back-to-back 8 Simple Rules episodes seem to be here for the rest of the season so I don't think we'll see anymore Complete Savages.
bschmale1113 02-22-2005, 02:51 PM If This was a First Year Comedy I think i will be canceled beacuse it in it 3rd Year and has a shot for syndication I think might return next year i not sure If Coming Back Next Year lets hope but If ABC Canceled the Show I think it could do well for The WB Friday Night Lineup up If the WB Pick up the show I think it will be a Midseason Relpacment
dlemond 02-22-2005, 03:15 PM Let's put it this way, if any of you really think this show isn't coming back next year I'll take your bets.
Anyone?
Didn't think so.
Superbowl 02-22-2005, 08:34 PM NATPE 2005 OFF-NETWORK ROUNDUP - For those interested, here's a breakdown of this year's off-network offerings at the 2005 NATPE convention, which began this week - Fall 2005: "24" (Twentieth), "Alias" (Buena Vista), "The Bernie Mac Show" (Twentieth), "Candid Camera" (Tribune Entertainment), "Da Vinci's Inquest" (Program Partners), "Farscape" (Debmar), "Girls Behaving Badly" (Sony), "My Wife and Kids" (Buena Vista), "One on One" (Paramount), "Sex and the City" (Warner Bros.), "Smallville" (Warner Bros.), "South Park" (Debmar), "Star Trek: Enterprise" (Paramount) and "Stargate Atlantis" (MGM); Fall 2006: "According to Jim" (Buena Vista), "CSI: Miami" (King World), "Everwood" (Warner Bros.), "The George Lopez Show" (Warner Bros.), "Reba" (Twentieth) and "Scrubs" (Buena Vista); Fall 2007: "Cold Case" (Warner Bros.) and "Eight Simple Rules" (Buena Vista); Fall 2008: "CSI: NY" (King World) and "Two and a Half Men" (Warner Bros.). Note that this list does not mean each series will be sold into syndication, it just means their respective distributors are looking to sell it for the targeted dates.

According to this report ABC has already started the processing of selling 8 Simple Rules for syndication for Fall 2007. This would greatly enhance the chances of the show being renewed for a fourth year. Agreed ?
Pavan 02-23-2005, 05:13 PM And this "rumor" about the season finale on April 1 is not true.
ABC has made some changes to this. Nothing major, it now is this:
March 4 - "The After Party" new episode and "Old Flame" rerun episode
March 11 - both episodes are reruns ("The Sub" and "C.J.'s Temptation")
March 18 - both episodes are TBD reruns
March 25 - 8pm TBD (so far Complete Savages is slated for 8:30pm, but that could change)
Chain Gang Member 02-24-2005, 11:56 AM I think the only thing that got me back into 8SR is David Spade
katefandream04 02-25-2005, 09:51 AM I hope it gets a 4th season. I'll be sad if it doesn't.
Pavan 02-25-2005, 10:24 PM March 25 - 8pm TBD (so far Complete Savages is slated for 8:30pm, but that could change)

8:30pm 8 Simple Rules (Rerun TBD)
Superbowl 03-04-2005, 11:32 AM Unfortunately, I have some bad news on the future of 8 Simple Rules. It was incorrectly reported at futoncritic.com that 8 Simple Rules was being sold for syndication for Fall 2007. I believe that report was duplicated in this forum.
Well, I have contacted several executives from Buena Vista Entertainment (the company that does syndication for the ABC shows) and they said the show is not being sold for syndication as of right now. Right now they do not have plans for syndication of 8 Simple Rules.
My impression was they were waiting to see if there would be a fourth season of 8 Simple Rules before putting it in syndication, and they think the show will be cancelled by ABC. One of the executives did mention that if they only have three seasons it may appear on a cable network such as ABC Family or Disney Channel.
I would urge everyone to e-mail ABC at some of the e-mail addresses at the beginning of this thread. Let's try to save this show. I think it is very, very likely the show is facing the ax in May.

Not true. I did not get the information from thefutoncritic.com I got it straight from NATPE's listings of shows available.

I don't think that would help much. Get more people to watch the show is the better thing to do. Ever since January, the show has been doing very well. Why do you think 2 more episodes were ordered? I think the show will be back next season, but I'm guessing 8:30pm, with My Wife & Kids at 8pm to start TGIF off.

Well if they do bring the show back they better put it on another night because Friday Night is not the answer

I checked to see if 8 Simple Rules was listed under Buena Vista's offerings. I could not find it, so I contacted several of the people listed there to see if 8 SR was going to be offered. They all told me no. They more or less told me that it would be syndicated only if it got a fourth season, and they doubted it would get it. A couple of them said maybe it may go to a cable channel, but no syndication.
Also, just a little more evidence. I have noticed ABC has totally stopped promoting 8 SR the past few weeks. They ran several promos today for Hope and Faith, but none for 8 SR.
I am sorry, because I love this show, but I think it is gone. If they are not selling it for syndication there is no reason to bring it back. I wish it was not true, but it is just the way it is.

Well, unfortunately I have something to shoot this theory down, too. I contacted a very respected media critic, and I asked him what he thought about ABC with sitcoms. He said since Desperate Housewifes and Lost are such successes for them they would be cutting back on sitcoms and focusing in on dramas. He also said shows like 8 Simple Rules and Less Than Perfect would probably be cut to make room for other shows. He said "ABC needs to cut the fat on their old sitcoms". He said none of them attract much of an audience except for According to Jim. Obviously, just his opinion, but it is an educated guess.
Believe me, I really don't want to be the pessimist here, but I am just telling it like it is. I think the show is facing the ax. All we can do is write ABC and hope they take it into consideration. Guys, I have really done my homework here. I just think the show is just about done. I wish it was not true, but it is.

They wouldn't have "long range" in the synopsis there. 2007 and on is in the long range forecast.
ABC promoted the last new episode a LOT, the one with CJ's Real Dad. Last week it was NOT on at all. This week's episode, I agree, has not been promoted much. I saw one promo during Regis & Kelly today. Hope & Faith was not promoted at all until today. Right now, ABC is focusing on their 4 midseason shows and the Oprah movie. TGIF will be in reruns most of March anyway.

The sign I do not like for 8 Simple Rules is that ABC would do promos every Friday that had usually would promote 8 Simple Rules and Hope and Faith. They never did a promo for Less Then Perfect. Now I noticed the past couple of weeks (last week no sitcoms were on) when the shows were on they only have promos for Hope and Faith running. I have not seen one 8 SR promo in the past two viewing weeks, but they still have Hope and Faith promos. That is a bad, bad sign. I think 8 Simple Rules has now been reduced to the same status as Less Than Perfect, but the network is still liking Hope and Faith. Not a very good sign for 8 Simple Rules.
Superbowl 03-04-2005, 05:57 PM They wouldn't have "long range" in the synopsis there. 2007 and on is in the long range forecast.
Not correct either. Look at the Warner Brothers shows available for syndication sales. They have Two and a Half Men listed for Fall 2007 :
http://www.natpe.org/conference/exhibitorlist/details/index.jsp?id_string=731:7tmQKtYyUPFGg68C4Q6tSA**
I think they do list Fall 2007 under the offerings and 8 Simple Rules may be offered at that date, but it is not being sold yet. That is because of the doubt of the fourth season. Just more bad circumstantial evidence that it is not coming back.

Not all studios list everything they are offering/selling in advance. I have information from NATPE that says "long range forecast" for Touchstone/Beuna Vista that 8 Simple Rules is being offered for fall 2007. Like I said before, doesn't mean it will be sold then, but the process has begun.
As for shows on the bubble, I agree with Media Life: http://69.20.6.242/News2005/feb05/feb28/5_fri/news3friday.html

Superbowl 03-04-2005, 07:12 PM Here is another little tidbit I would like to throw out for opinions. I notice According to Jim, Hope and Faith and My Wife and Kids all have one hour season finales and the other ABC sitcoms have 1/2 hour season finales. Does this give us a clue what the network likes ? Maybe the shows that are coming back get one hour so they can have a show to lead into next year, and the other shows only get a half hour to close shop. I am not sure if this means anything. I was wondering, because it seems like the safe shows have an hour, and the bubble shows all have a half hour. Any thoughts ?
Pavan 03-04-2005, 08:30 PM Superbowl: I think My Wife & Kids is probably more likely to get canceled than 8 Simple Rules. My Wife & Kids is scoring in the low 4 ratings. I know it is up against American Idol, but 8 Simple Rules was scoring in the high 5's against AI last year, but then it went down into the 4's in April & May, which is lower than 8 Simple Rules is doing currently. I think both will be back next season anyway.
Enjoy tonight's show.

Wouldn't they want to keep My Wife and Kids on because it goes into syndication next Fall ? I always thought they like to have a show on the network when it goes into syndication on local markets ?

They would, I'm not saying it will be leaving. It is more likely than 8 Simple Rules to leave, I think. Dharma & Greg left ABC went it went to syndication.
Superbowl 03-04-2005, 11:15 PM Okay, we will find out in May. All I know is I hope I am wrong and you are right. If 8 Simple Rules is renewed everyone here has a right to call me and idiot, and I would be loving it. :D

Yea they can't cancel all their comedies and something has to air on Fridays and CBS and NBC has all the dramas covered that night.
bschmale1113 03-05-2005, 12:14 PM it sad the way that 8 Simple Rules is going Before John Ritter Died it have shot at being in the top 30 once John Ritter Died The Show will never being the same It did get Huge rating for the fairwell Episode after it delcine very quickly and move to Friday the rating got much worse so am not suprise where 8 Simple Rules where it is right now fighting to stay on the air right now
It get pick up right next year beacuse they ABC Does not have a Sitcom in the Top 30 right now
Superbowl 03-05-2005, 02:54 PM NBC got the night started at 8 p.m. with "Dateline," 7.1/13, while CBS had its weekly conversation with God courtesy of "Joan of Arcadia," 5.3/10. ABC went with a double dose of "8 Simple Rules," averaging a 4.6/9 for the hour
Above is the ratings for Friday March 4. This is what happens when the network gives up on a show, and doesn't promote it all. A lot of people probably didn't even know a new show was on. It was origninally scheduled for a repeat and then changed to a first run show. Publications like TV guide had a repeat listed. I bet you lots of people may have watched if they knew a new episode was on. Like I said, this is what happens when a network gives up on a show and stops promoting it. Once again, 8 Simple Rules is done. You can book it. :(

Sweeps is over, 4.6/9 is not too bad. That averages the 8:30pm airing, too, which is probably much lower than the 8pm airing. Hope & Faith/Less Than Perfect averaged a 4.3/8.
Think positive. 8 Simple Rules was the highest rated show of the night for TGIF. Final numbers will be available Monday, so we will know how each episode did, rather than just the hourly average.

Boy, I wish I was as optimistic as you. I think those numbers are terrible. I am most mad at ABC. They basically sunk the ratings for the whole night by not promoting the shows at all. CBS ran promotions for two days for Joan of Arcadia advertising a new show. I think it is a huge factor that places like TV guide had a repeat listed instead of a new show that was put in late. They at least could have let people know a new episode was going to be shown. I really believe the numbers are lower than normal because of no promotion at all. I still think the network has given up on the show. Very frustrating.

That is because they preempted it in some parts of the U.S. I had to download the episode because of it.The ratings would have been higher if they would have just shown 8SR.

gilligan fanatic 03-05-2005, 09:57 PM I hope its not cancelled. There are a lot of shows on that stink and this one is not bad at all. There was a post last week that said ABC longested running current scripted series began in 2001 so ABC will hopefuly try to have longer running series. I think it will be back.
Yeldarb 03-06-2005, 12:51 AM One thing I'd like to know is how/why so many comedies have been sinking ratings-wise lately? Even NBC's Joey is only doing half as well as Friends was doing. Are people REALLY being hypnotized by those cheesy reality series?

Sadly yep, If they want reality why don't they go out and live it, instead of watching the rubbish on TV, wouldn't a mirror be better?
katefandream04 03-06-2005, 10:07 AM Sadly yep, If they want reality why don't they go out and live it, instead of watching the rubbish on TV, wouldn't a mirror be better?
Yeah a mirror would be better:-D,those reality shows, some just want to make others who aren't like them feel bad about their image,or just to humiliate others on national t.v. It frustrates me that a lot of good shows like 8SR are losing viewers to this garbage.
Superbowl 03-06-2005, 06:39 PM I wrote to a TV media critic that I have a relationship with to ask him what he thinks happend on Friday night to the ratings. He agreed with me that ABC basically sold out their sitcoms on Friday night to sell their new shows like Jake In Progress and Blind Justice. They switched to new shows late, and a lot of the weekly publications like TV guide or newspaper TV sections that have weekly listings were printed before the change. A lot of people picked up those listings and thought that the shows were repeats. They never did any promotions to tell people they were new shows. He agreed that is the reason the ratings suddenly tanked on all three Friday ABC sitcoms.
8 Simple Rules has been steadily in the lower 5's and Hope and Faith has been in the upper 5's. For both shows to suddenly fall in the 4's something has to have happend.
I hate to say it my friends, but I think this tells us ABC's thinking towards 8 Simple Rules. The show got no promotion and they simply do not care about it anymore. Enjoy the last three new episodes. They are probably the last ones. It is such a shame they are so close to syndication. I particularly would love to watch the John Ritter episodes again. It looks like it will never happen. :(
katefandream04 03-06-2005, 07:03 PM I don't believe that...they DO care. Just because a show doesn't get promotion doesn't mean they don't care.Give the show a chance. Not everybody saw it,that's why.

Miss Golden 03-10-2005, 07:08 PM ABC has 90% Confirmed they will stick with the TGIF Comedy Lineup next fall. On Regis and Kelly, Regis stated that Hope and Faith had been renewed for a third season despite a ratings decline this year. Also, on the futon critic, they had an article about how 8 Simple Rules will likely come back, but Less Than Perfect is on the bubble, with Complete Savages cancelled.
Superbowl 03-11-2005, 10:52 AM Also, on the futon critic, they had an article about how 8 Simple Rules will likely come back, but Less Than Perfect is on the bubble, with Complete Savages cancelled.
I saw that article at futon critic. The good news I see there is that 8 Simple Rules ratings are off less than 1 % in their timeslot from George Lopez last year. Also, their yearly ratings are off about 15 % from last year. However, last years ratings are a bit inflated, because the first three episodes were John Ritters final episodes, and they then had a few episodes that dealt with John's (Paul's) death. If you remember, those episodes drew great ratings, so the true ratings are probably off less than the 15 % reported.
The bad news I see is this reporter basically had almost every show renewed including Less Than Perfect and Rodney. If anyone thinks ABC is going to renew their entire lineup they are nuts. They will cancel some shows to make room for new shows.

I don't agree here. Off 15% from last year is because the show is on Fridays now. Fridays is much less rated night than Tuesday. Only down less than 1% from George Lopez is very good. Especially since TGIF got off to a very slow start in September and October this year. If you want to compare, why don't you compare My Wife & Kids. Nearly 30% down from what 8 Simple Rules did in the same slot last year.
I don't think Rodney is coming back, despite what that article says. It has done decent, almost the same numbers as Less Than Perfect from last year, but that's not that good, since LTP is now on Fridays anyway. I think if LTP does come back, it is only because of a syndication deal. I still think 8SR has a way better chance than LTP to come back.
Complete Savages is probably never going to air now. This just in from ABC:
Effective, Friday, April 1, 2005 “8 Simple Rules” will air in the 8:30 PM ET/PT time period until further notice.
“8 Simple Rules” will continue to air in its regular Friday, 8:00 PM ET/PT time period.
Kaley Cuoco is going to be in NY in mid-May. That is very good news, if you ask me. ABC's upfront is May 17. She will also be co-hosting The View either before that or a little after that. No one is invited to upfront, if there show is not coming back.
Superbowl 03-11-2005, 06:02 PM I don't agree here. Off 15% from last year is because the show is on Fridays now.
Look, the show has a chance, but it is on the bubble. Can we agree on that ? One thing I do think you forgot in saying that the show is now on Friday. That is that on Tuesday it was up against American Idol. Now it goes up against lesser competition than American Idol. George Lopez and My Wife and Kids did much better than before American Idol came along. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think 8 SR did better last year on Tuesday before American Idol came.
katefandream04 03-11-2005, 06:22 PM Yeah, but they moved it because AI took all of 8SR's viewers.
Superbowl 03-11-2005, 06:28 PM Here's something maybe someone can answer that has me curious. I am delighted that they show two 8 SR every Friday even though one is a repeat. However, since they basically will have shown all the 8 SR episodes from season three twice by the end of the season, what will they show in the summertime ? Will they be showing the episodes for a third time in the summer ?
katefandream04 03-11-2005, 08:40 PM Probably likely. Or they might find some other episodes to air.Who knows?
Miss Golden 03-11-2005, 08:51 PM ABC is definately going to cancel more comedies besides Complete Savages. I think Rodney will get the axe, it is doing about the same as to what Less than Perfect did on Tuesdays last year, and that was the reason Less than Perfect moved to Fridays was because they wanted a better show for Tuesdays.
I think My Wife and Kids will come back, it is a top comedy for ABC and has been on the network for over 4 years now, it has enough for a syndication deal, but I still think it will go another year.
Geroge Lopez and According to Jim will definately be back.
If ABC is going to keep the TGIF format, 8 Simple Rules and Hope and Faith look to be locks. As for Less than Perfect, it may go, it is buried on Friday Nights at 9:30 and has consistently gotten lower ratings each week. If they brought it back next year, it would probably sink even more and end up like Drew Carey Show or Just Shoot Me. Even though it is one year away from a syndication deal, it might go striaght to cable because sometimes they pick up shows that do not get a complete 4 years.
Brent88 03-11-2005, 11:35 PM Kaley Cuoco is going to be in NY in mid-May. That is very good news, if you ask me. ABC's upfront is May 17. She will also be co-hosting The View either before that or a little after that. No one is invited to upfront, if there show is not coming back.
That defintely sounds like a show that is coming back...
Brent88 03-11-2005, 11:36 PM Probably likely. Or they might find some other episodes to air.Who knows?
Hopefully from earlier seasons because the repeats from this season are getting old...
Superbowl 03-11-2005, 11:38 PM Probably likely. Or they might find some other episodes to air.Who knows?
Wouldn't it be great if they could show us some of the John Ritter episodes. I would love to see some of them again.
katefandream04 03-12-2005, 11:46 AM Wouldn't it be great if they could show us some of the John Ritter episodes. I would love to see some of them again.
I want to see some of the John episodes. I missed most of them when they originally aired
Superbowl 03-15-2005, 07:39 PM Kaley Cuoco is going to be in NY in mid-May. That is very good news, if you ask me. ABC's upfront is May 17. She will also be co-hosting The View either before that or a little after that. No one is invited to upfront, if there show is not coming back.
Well, it was just reported that Kaley Cuoco will be co-hosting The View on April 18-22. It looks like they are trying to get her out of town before they announce the shows cancellation. Any other ideas or optimistic reasons we should have regarding the shows renewal ?
katefandream04 03-15-2005, 07:51 PM Well, it was just reported that Kaley Cuoco will be co-hosting The View on April 18-22. It looks like they are trying to get her out of town before they announce the shows cancellation. Any other ideas or optimistic reasons we should have regarding the shows renewal ?
No...Kaley is filling in for one of the co hosts because she is on maternity leave. She has previously cohosted before,so they asked her. They aren't trying to get her out of town. I believe in the show continuing. The show isn't even finished and people are claiming 8SR won't continue.
Pavan 03-15-2005, 08:44 PM Well, it was just reported that Kaley Cuoco will be co-hosting The View on April 18-22. It looks like they are trying to get her out of town before they announce the shows cancellation. Any other ideas or optimistic reasons we should have regarding the shows renewal ?
She might be on The View in April, but she will still be in NY in mid-May, as far as I know. Why are you such a pessimist? I have given you a lot of reasons to calm down and you just try to find new reasons to burn this show.
Superbowl 03-15-2005, 11:23 PM I want the show to continue very, very badly. I just look at the ratings every week and I get a sinking feeling, literally. I watch ABC a lot, and they have stop running promos for it completely, and that worries me, too. They run some promos for According to Jim and Hope and Faith, but never 8 Simple Rules and that concerns me, too.
Believe me, I want you to come back here in May and call me an idiot for doubting you. I would be delighted to be completely wrong. :D
Pavan 03-15-2005, 11:47 PM So you never answered my question. In April and May of last year the show was scoring in the low 4's for first run episodes. Why did the show come back then? If ABC wanted to cancel the show, last year would have been perfect. Now, with a full season next season, they will get to the magic 100 episodes, which means big bucks for them in syndication.
Now they are on Fridays, where it is a slow ratings night, where it really has no pressure. And it does decent enough for Fridays. The show is now in reruns and you don't have to look at the ratings, because you know it will not be good as it was in January and February. The show is doing the same as George Lopez in the same slot last season, and GLo is still on the air this season. Doesn't ordering two extra episodes give you a hint that they want to keep this show? They could have very well aired encores of something else in place of Complete Savages, but they opted for 8SR, and don't tell me they are burning off reruns. If I recall, they doubled up on 8 Simple Rules either last season or the year before as well for a short period of time. And some episodes I think even aired 3-4 times that season.
Superbowl 03-15-2005, 11:57 PM Prior to this season I would completely agree with everything you said. However, I think a lot has changed at ABC since the phenomen of Desperate Housewifes and to a lesser extent, Lost.
I think last year ABC was a network that was in such decline it would renew anything that was just okay. I think the network is being more agressive now in looking for the next hit show. I think they have become giddy on the two previously mentioned hits, and now are looking for the next hit. I think this year they will cancel shows on the bubble with questionable ratings rather than renewing them. Last year it was the opposite.
Just to give a clue as to their thinking, look at how they are promoting their three new shows (Jake In Progress, Blind Justice, and Grey's Anatomy). I have never seen a network promote new shows like that. I really just think the network's thinking has changed. If 8SR was in the same situation this time last year I think it would have been renewed for the fourth year. Something tells me this year they will instead cancel, and roll the dice looking for the next hit.
Maybe it is wrong, but this is the feeling I get from ABC more than any of the networks.
Pavan 03-16-2005, 12:22 AM I don't think they are going to gamble and cancel everything not performing like Housewives or Lost. ABC has been promoting their midseason entires alot, I agree, but I saw endless commercials all summer long for Housewives and Lost. I think those were more heavily promoted. I don't think Jake, Eyes, Blind Justice or Grey's Anatomy is going to effect 8 Simple Rules at all. It will probably effect Wife Swap or something like that. We'll see how everything does. By April, I will figure out what ABC will do and make my own scheduled proposal for the fall.
Superbowl 03-16-2005, 12:29 AM Okay, like I said before. I rooting for you to be right. This is one time I want to be wrong :)
Superbowl 03-17-2005, 11:56 AM From Marc Berman Program Insider on 3/17/04 :
"I would trim the Friday comedy block to one-hour and move either Wife Swap or Supernanny to Friday next season."
If this happens it is probably curtains for 8 Simple Rules. Yes, they could put on Hope and Faith with 8 Simple Rules, but it is more likely they put on Hope and Faith with a new show at 9:30.
Auntie 03-17-2005, 02:32 PM I have to agree that since the 'Good Bye' episode, the ratings have slightly dipped, but now, their in the 70's that really isn't a good sign. In my opinion, it just hasn't really been the same without John Ritter. I'm not saying that, this is why the ratings are falling, than again, who knows? I know I really don't have any interest in it anymore.I myself, would rather see them in syndication so that they can (again) honor John Ritter. :jack . Although, I am surprised that being they had Ed O' Neil on as a guest star, I would think that it would've helped boost the ratings a little.
Auntie 03-17-2005, 02:40 PM Yeah, I actually would like to see the John Ritter shows again. It would be a great honor to him to have him live on in this show. I always enjoyed watching him. I was just wondering if other viewers would object to seeing him in the show.
I for one, would LOVE to see him(8 Simple Rules') in syndication again like on maybe 'ABC Family' :). It wouldn't bother me at all.

I think 8 Simple Rules and Hope and Faith or another comedy will go from 8-9pm and then probably Supernanny at 9(or possibly AFV or Wife Swap).

I really don't see how the show 'Desperate Housewives' could be partly to blame for these other long running shows. It's called ratings. People watch what thay want to watch. As for '8 Simple Rules', the show has been slowly going downhill ever since the 'Thanksgiving' episode. There is only so much that the actors can do considering the past circumstances of the show. It's like the old saying,' You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink'. I used to love the show(reguarding John Ritter), but ever since the episode 'Good Bye', I really (myself) have no interest in watching it anymore.
Superbowl 03-18-2005, 11:04 PM Well, I saw that the season finale has been moved to April 29. So that means the network has pulled the show from the May sweeps. Can someone tell me what this means ? Is this further evidence the network is giving up on the show or is just my imagination telling me this ? Any comments ?
Pavan 03-18-2005, 11:25 PM May sweeps starts April 28. So, April 29 is IN sweeps. Less Than Perfect's season finale is April 15. Hope & Faith's finale as of now is May 6. So ABC must be planning something for the last 2 Fridays of sweeps--Super Millionaire maybe? I can see them airing that a few nights a week for sweeps (Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays especially).
bschmale1113 03-19-2005, 01:20 AM I think now I think it will be canceled now beacuse of John Stamos new hit don't get me wrong I glad that he finally got a hit show beacuse i grew up watching Full House that the good news bad news is that 8 simple rules may be canceled beacuse of John Stamos out of all people

What does that have to do with 8 Simple Rules? Stamos' show is not on Friday nights. It's on Thursdays and so far it is only doing average.

I agree. It is in sweeps. That doesn't mean they gave up on the show, because they still care.

it drew 5.0/8 on a Thursday night beats an Original Episode the O.C in it Time Slot I understand that there was no Survivor but almost beat Wil & Grace in it Time Slot
Auntie 03-19-2005, 08:25 PM Well, I am sorry to say the information you got was wrong. I went to this page here :
http://www.natpe.org/conference/exhibitorlist/details/index.jsp?id_string=18889:hZVNjwIjq4K2kd4zJKxSgg**
I also feel bad for the actors on the show. Actually, from what I've heard, right from the start, it was Katey Sagal who pulled everyone together to keep the show going on. Kayle Cucoc didn't want to go on without John Ritter. They've tried everything to bring the ratings. I think they all know which way the wind is blowing now (so to speak). There is only so much they can do.

Mr. Television 03-20-2005, 02:58 AM Well no one really knows if its coming back or not. It is on the border but so is every ABC sitcom except ACTJ. I still think it will probably be back and be paired with Hope And Faith on Friday Night.
katefandream04 03-20-2005, 04:11 AM I also feel bad for the actors on the show.
That is correct. It is Katey that kept it going. They are trying to break their records of ratings.Just remember, season 2's ratings were way worse than what this season has gotten. Last season had 3's and 4's. I am so proud of the cast for their hard work. But,just because they aren't listed in certain lists or critics claim its in danger, doesn't mean it won't get cancelled.Usually these are critics who dislike the show,or stopped watching it after John's death. I believe it will get a 4th season if everyone would just give it a chance to thrive. It's only just begun.
Superbowl 03-20-2005, 10:43 AM Personally, I think ABC would be making a huge mistake if they did not give it a fourth season for syndication purposes alone. This would be a hot property for syndication. I can't tell you how many people I have heard say they want to see the John Ritter episodes again. They have two potential audiences for syndication. They have the people who love the show itself, and the John Ritter fans who would want to watch John's last work and see it live on forever. Shame on this network for thinking about cancelling this show.

bschmale1113 03-20-2005, 10:58 AM I think is still 50/50 iook at the good and the bad
Good
in it 3rd Season
as a shot at syndication
ABC showing reruns after a new Epsoide
only down 3% from George Lopez which held the time slot from last year
the 2nd highest Ratings for a Friday Night Sitcome only Hope & Faith is Higher
it was a big hit
Bad
they are 81st in the Ratings
They are third in it time slot behind Dateline NBC & Joan of Arcdia
they are down 15% or maybe 10% from last year
they are on the bubble
Not enough promos
Lost & Housewives beacame major hits
John Ritter Death
Superbowl 03-20-2005, 11:09 AM The thing that really still worries me the most is that ABC stopped doing promos for this show. Early in the year they always ran promos for the show. I haven't seen one single promo for this show in over a month. I know that ABC is promoting their new shows a lot, but they still run an occasional promo for According to Jim and Hope and Faith, but 8 SR gets no more promos at all. That worries me. To me, it signals the network has given up on the show.

81st in the rating wow. I didn't think they were that low.
katefandream04 03-21-2005, 05:08 AM 81st in the rating wow. I didn't think they were that low.
I don't think they are.I think it has a chance because of syndication of continuing.Plus, the reason there aren't any new ads is because there have mostly been reruns.
Superbowl 03-21-2005, 08:39 AM I don't think they are.I think it has a chance because of syndication of continuing.Plus, the reason there aren't any new ads is because there have mostly been reruns.
ABC did not promo "The After Party" at all. It was a new episode. In fact, some people did not know the episode was new, because it changed late from a repeat to a new episode that day. Many publications such as TV guide had the show listed as a repeat, and ABC never promoted it to let people know a new episode was on. And guess what happend ? It got one of the lowest ratings for a new episode since about November. I think it got a 4.8.
I was watching some of the ABC movie on Saturday night and saw a promo for According to Jim and Rodney. They also still run some promos for Hope and Faith. Early in the season they always ran promos for 8 Simple Rules. This makes me very nervous that the network has stopped promoting the show completely. It could be a very bad sign. :(
TripperFan 03-21-2005, 09:53 AM I would love if 8SR would show the repeats with John in it! I would like him to be honored not forgotten. They don't even mention him anymore!!
Exactly!! I'll take any chance we have to keep seeing John live on for us!
Frankly, I haven't enjoyed the show since his death, but I do hope it gets picked up so it will be syndicated. I'll be watching then specifically for repeats of John's episodes.
We still love ya John!! :)

Write to ABC at the above mentioned addresses in this thread. Tell them you want to see the John Ritter episodes in syndication. I really think it helps to let them know that you want to see the John Ritter episodes in syndication. It tells them that there is a large syndication audience for this show. I have written to each address above listed. Some even take the time to e-mail you back.
By the way, just write out one mass e-mail, and copy it, and send it to all the addresses.
bschmale1113 03-21-2005, 11:05 AM I still think 8 Simple Rules is better then Hope & Faith the reason why Hope & Faith get better ratings is beacuse of Kelly Ripa they make a big about her beacuse she on that Morning Show with Regis

Superbowl 03-21-2005, 11:23 PM Here is paragraph from Marc Berman's Program Insider on Monday. He apparently likes 8 Simple Rules :
"On ABC, repeats of the underrated 8 Simple Rules (two episodes - HH: #3, avg. 4.0/ 7; Viewers: #3, avg. 5.73 million; A18-49: #3t, avg. 1.8/ 6), the generic Hope & Faith (HH: #3, 4.0/ 7; Viewers: #3, 5.76 million; A18-49: #3, 1.9/ 6), and the forgettable Less Than Perfect (HH: #3, 3.8/ 6; Viewers: #3, 4.35 million; A18-49: #4, 1.9/ 6) led into a third-place 5.2/ 9 in households, 7.30 million viewers and a 2.6/ 8 among adults 18-49 for 20/20 at 10 p.m. As ABC prepares the blueprints for its fall 2005 line-up, and decides which comedies to renew, I hope 8 Simple Rules is given a fourth-season to reach enough episodes for syndication. "
Let's hope ABC listens to him and us. :)

Very noncommital. Just thank you for writing type stuff. They are quite tight lipped about their plans. I did get a thank you from Stephen McPherson who is President of ABC Entertainment. I thought that was quite nice.
Hey, maybe it will do no good, but at least they know we care, and want the show. I do think it is good to let them know that many of us want to see the John Ritter episodes in syndication. I think that could give them a reason to want to give this show a fourth season for syndication purposes. Who knows ?

Going to get at it today. Yeah, that sounds about typical. They rarely will commit to a response at this point. They'll probably make an announcement.
Mentioning that we want to see "John episodes" again should be the clincher if anything. They were very sentimental when he passed, so that would be the angle that would carry the most weight to me.
bschmale1113 03-23-2005, 10:58 AM If you want to see John again on 8 Simple Rules I know it hard to watch without him but watch the rest of this season if you don't you may had to wait to it comes out on dvd beacuse show as a chance that it will not air next season it means it not going to come on syndicated the quickiest way to watch again was 8 simple rules the rest of this season they it means be a fourth season which means we could see John again in the Fall of 2007
Auntie 03-24-2005, 04:06 PM This show really needs a lot of viewers to watch, if they want this show to make it to syndication. But be prepared people, those who don't watch the show(myself included), may not get the chance to see John again until they decide to bring it to dvd.
Pavan 03-25-2005, 02:11 PM The season finale is scheduled for April 15, same date as Less Than Perfect's season finale. Hope & Faith will probably end April 29 or at the latest, May 6.
Do not be alarmed by the early ending. ABC is planning something (specials) for Fridays during sweeps. ABC ended Life with Bonnie in late March during its first season and it came back the next fall for a second season, so it doesn't mean anything. Just relax and wait for the fall schedule announcement on May 17.

How do you know all this? I thought the only reason 8SR will be eniding earlier is because it wasn't preempted as much as last season. It seems that all the shows are ending a bit early,it's nothing to worry about,so I don't think we should worry.

Here you go with your optimism again. Shows that get removed from the May sweeps are rarely renewed. It seems now that Less Than Perfect, Rodney and now 8 Simple Rules have all been removed from May sweeps. That is a very, very, very bad sign. To make it worse, Hope and Faith, According to Jim, George Lopez and My Wife and Kids are all ending their season in the May ratings sweeps. Kind of sounds to me like those are renewed shows and the three out of the sweeps are gone.
As I said way back in February. I think the show is gone, and this is even more evidence. You can almost book it that the four in the sweeps will be renewed and the other three are cancelled. You can write it down now.

That means nothing... it's the computer or something. The schedule won't be announced til Mid-May, and while I think 8 Simple Rules is coming back... it won't air twice on Fridays(at least initially). They will try out either an existing comedy(Hope and Faith?) or less likely, a new one.
Auntie 03-26-2005, 09:42 AM I agree with one thing. Someone had said that they haven't seen any new commercials for '8 Simple Rules' in a while. That right there isn't a good sign. Last night's episode(a rerun) I tried to watch, I kept going back and forth to '8 Simple Rules' & 'Highway To Heaven'( tvland), and in one scene, where they had 'CJ' sitting at the desk where 'Paul' used to sit, they had John's picture on sitting on top of something, I almost broke down crying. :(

Working under the assumption 8 Simple Rules only gets three seasons my feeling is they will put the first three seasons on the ABC Family channel at some point. I think the 30 John Ritter episodes is just too valuable for them to not use at all. This is more than just a guess. This is the impression I got from the Buena Vista executives when I contacted them. They indicated that they will probably do something with the shows three seasons through cable if they do not have enough episodes for full syndication.

Any idea if both or at least Less Than Perfect will be back? *crosses fingers*
bschmale1113 03-27-2005, 06:28 PM Yeah, I have sent my e-mails,too but it looks pretty bleak. Now comes word that ABC has moved the season finale to April 15. That means they removed 8SR from the May sweeps just as they have done with Less Than Perfect and Rodney. If you look at the circumstantial evidence of the ratings, the total lack of promotion for this show by the network, and now the season finale moved up I think it is pretty much over.
Yes, you can hold out hope until May, but it looks to me like the decision has already been made and the show is done. What a shame.
Auntie 03-28-2005, 02:27 PM I agree with you. I just emailed the futoncritic a couple of days ago, and they emailed me back (surprisingly), stating that we won't hear anything about the fall lineup until May 17th. But I feel, that '8 Simple Rules' won't be part of the fall lineup. They've done all they can(considering the past circumstances of the show). If stars like Ed O' Neal, Pam Anderson, and Adam Arkin(correct me if his name is wrong), than there really isn't too much hope for the show. Although, I was hoping to see Henry Winkler possibly guest star on a future episode, maybe that would help the show's ratings, but I don't see that happening anytime too soon.
It really mains to boil down to the show wasn't the same without John. I think most people(IMO) mainly watched because of him. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Superbowl 03-28-2005, 05:46 PM At least Marc Berman still likes 8 Simple Rules (from Program Insider on March 28):
On ABC, a repeat of It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown sparked minor interest in the 8 p.m. half-hour with a third-place 4.3/ 8 in households, 7.54 million viewers and a 2.3/ 8 among adults 18-49. The remainder of the evening on ABC -- a repeat of 8 Simple Rules (HH: 3.3/ 6; Viewers: 5.40 million; A18-49: 1.7/ 5), Hope & Faith (HH: 4.1/ 7; Viewers: 6.05 million; A18-49: 1.9/ 6), Less Than Perfect (HH: 3.7/ 6; Viewers: 5.35 million; A18-49: 1.8/ 5) and 20/20 (HH: 4.9/ 9; Viewers: 7.16 million; A18-49: 2.2/ 7) -- also ranked third. Of the three ABC sitcoms, although the rapidly declining Hope & Faith still looks like a lock for renewal, I also hope this won't be the last we will see of 8 Simple Rules.
I actually e-mailed Marc Berman a couple of months ago, and asked him what he thought about 8 Simple rules renewal chances. He is a fan of the show. At the time he said, as others have here, that he thought the show would be renewed for syndication purposes. I then e-mailed him back a couple of weeks ago, when the ratings started to tank. He then was much less sure about its renewal chances. He also now thinks the show is on the chopping block.
Once again, anyone who has not written or who would like to write again, please make sure to e-mail these two key people. They are probably the two people holding 8SR fate in their hands.

I really hope so myself. I really would like to see the show renewd for another season even though it hasn't been the same without John. But I think in order for that to happen , all of us here(including myself), must watch the show for the next 3 Fridays so that it could possibly make it for a 4th season( even though it's hard for some of us still to watch). I myself did watch it last week, and it was extremly hard for me to watch especialy when you saw John's picture sitting on top of the desk where CJ was typing on the laptop. I almost broke down crying.

I consider that bad news. Maybe they are just promoting the the two early season finale shows. Just remember if you are a fan of 8 Simple Rules you should be hoping Less Than Perfect gets cancelled. There is no way in the world that both these two shows will get renewed. It is doubtful either one will get renewed, but definitely both of them will not get renewed. We need 8 Simple Rules to just nose out Less Than Perfect for the last spot on the fall schedule.

8 Simple Rules deserves a spot more than Less Than Perfect does. I wouldn't be suprised if 8SR took the Complete Savages timeslot.

I would hope that if they had to choose between the two (and I think it is doubtful either one will make it) that they would choose 8 SR. It has much better syndication possibilities mainly because of the John Ritter episodes. Also, the ratings are a little higher. Personally, I think they are both gone, but I hope if one survives it will be 8 Simple Rules.

As I have said many times before the network never promotes 8 Simple Rules anymore, and apparently has given up on the show.
This obviously was bad information, and another hint from the network on the fate of the show...

If I were to guess, you'll see the promo during the 8am hour.
I will not be showing you this again, as I might get in trouble for doing this, but since you seemed to not believe me, I showed you.
MAN!!! That is great... I've been looking for DH promos all week. I don't watch ABC much during the week.
Sorry to stray a little OT there.
Brent88 03-31-2005, 11:04 PM I did not watch Extreme Makeover

I feel bad I missed the promo for 8 Simple Rules, not Extreme Makeover. :talk:
Auntie 04-01-2005, 09:39 AM Other shows have been syndicated where an actor has died in it and I never felt awkward watching it. The only difference here is that JR was the main character.
Just to let eveyone know here, last night I watched 'Jake In Progress' and not once did I see ANY PROMOTION for '8 Simple Rules'. There was however plenty promotions for 'Desperate Housewives', 'Extreme Makeover', and Grey's A.'

Maybe because 8SR isn't like JIP, Targetted Advertising.
It would be silly to put an 8SR commercial during a show like Desperate Housewives, JP,EX. Just like it would be silly airing a Japanese Commercial, during a Presidential Rally.
;)

It changed. Pav posted that it aired during Makeover instead.

Brent88 04-04-2005, 10:22 AM OUCH!!!! That was a new episode too.
ABC and CBS both had HORRIBLE ratings Friday Night(FOX always sucks).
Superbowl 04-04-2005, 11:08 AM Well, the new episode did beat Hope & Faith's 4.1 new episode rating from the previous week. However, the ratings really are suffering lately. I think lots of people may have been watching Pope coverage on news channels on Friday night.
Pavan 04-04-2005, 02:34 PM Double the promotions for this Friday's episode this week. Promos will air during GMA and My Wife & Kids/George Lopez on Tuesday.

-On the Fence For Renewal:
8 Simple Rules (ABC), Joan of Arcadia (CBS), Bernie Mac (Fox), JAG (CBS), Less Than Perfect (ABC)
Two episodes of 8 Simple Rules (original and repeat) opened the night for ABC with a typically bland 4.3/ 7 in households (#3), 6.16 million viewers (#3), and a 1.9/ 6 among adults 18-49 (#2) from 8-9 p.m., followed by a repeat of Hope & Faith (HH: #3, 4.2/ 7; Viewers: #3, 6.05 million; A18-49: #2, 2.1/ 7) and an original installment of Less Than Perfect (HH: #3, 3.8/ 7; Viewers: #3, 5.58 million; A18-49: #2, 2.0/ 6).

I don't think so...Joan of Arcadia and 8SR seem to be doing a lot better than the other shows. Critics are just stating their opinions,it doesn't mean much. Most people ignore them.

That may be true, and I hope it is, but what I don't like is that the show has been removed from the May sweeps. If notice all the "most likely cancelled" shows have been removed from the May sweeps. I think it was reported that before that ABC was going to be doing specials in the 8SR timeslot in May sweeps. Well, I looked today and it looks like they will be doing repeats of America's Most Wanted Videos in that time slot. Does not say much for the network's thinking of 8SR when they remove it from May sweeps for repeats of another show.
Also, as to the extra promotion they are running for 8SR, I don't put a lot in that either. They seem to be running promos for all the on the bubble shows this week. I saw several promos for Rodney that they never run. I think it is because the on the bubble shows have new shows this week, while the "renewed" shows have repeats, because they are saving the new shows for May. Just a very bad feeling about this show's chances. I really hate to say it, but it is just the way I feel. :(

Its only 8SR thats replaced May 6th, for the other 2 weeks its all of TGIF, so it doesn't really show much for their feelings of 8SR.
Its back after May Sweeps, with 2 episodes as usual.

I don't think that is correct.
What I saw is they have a repeat of America's Favorite Home Videos on 4/22, AFHV on 4/29, 5/6 and I think 2 hours of AHV on 5/13.
It looks to me like they are trying AHV in the 8-9 slot, and they may be cutting the sitcoms to the 9-10 hour for next year. With Hope and Faith already renewed in the 9-9:30 slot that leaves only one slot. I think the network may want to put a new show in that slot, which may leave 8SR out. I do not think they will move the day of 8SR again.

When I said 2 weeks, I meant 2 weeks in May.
Anyway, I guess this does seem bad, but like Pavan said it could come mid-season, 1 more season whenever it airs will mean the show can get syndication.
Auntie 04-06-2005, 09:41 AM Well, if they do the only day left is Saturday, and if they are moved to that day, than consider them gone. Because as we all know, Saturday is NOT a good day to be on. Classic case, CBS's 'Touched By An Angel' was moved to Saturday, and that same year, within a few months, they were cancelled. Most people go out on Saturday night.
By The way, has anyone seen yet John Ritter's movie 'Man Of The Year'? Wow, does John play one PO(you know what). I just bought it yesterday form Sam Goody. The story line itself is pretty o.k., it's a little confusing to follow with all the split screens going on at the same time but all in all, the movie is pretty good. Another stellar performance again John! :jack
Brent88 04-06-2005, 10:23 AM Its back after May Sweeps, with 2 episodes as usual.
"After May" is repeats... I HIGHLY doubt they'll be showing 2 episodes for long then since they've already shown almost all of the episodes from this season.
Raisingdad2004 04-06-2005, 10:27 AM "After May" is repeats

Number 9 Dream 04-06-2005, 05:10 PM Its back May 27 thats still in May. :)

Superbowl 04-06-2005, 05:31 PM Its back May 27 thats still in May. :)

I see what you mean. On the ABCMediaNet website they have the schedule way in advance. The schedule for May 27 means nothing. All they do is put the "regular" schedule for that day, because the day has not been scheduled yet. Believe me, if the show is cancelled on or before May 17 you will not see 8SR on that day or most likely any other day for the rest of the summer. This could be the last two weeks we ever see it on ABC.
Auntie 04-07-2005, 09:31 AM I'm not an expert in this field, but my guess is, if they don't show reapeats during the summer of '8 Simple Rules', than it will be most likely that they'll have some other summer replacement in it's time slot. I would think probably some moronic reality show, or they'd come up with some new summer replacement show.
Auntie 04-07-2005, 09:37 AM When you say "repeats", do you mean the John Ritter episodes? That will be coming May 27th?
Wouldn't that be teriffic to see John again? :D :loveya: :jack .
Superbowl 04-11-2005, 08:17 AM It gets bleaker and bleaker. Here are Friday's ratings. The show didn't even pull in a 4.0. Every week the ratings go down more. We may still like it, but the ratings just keep sinking and sinking and sinking. And this was after the network even promoted the show last week.

A 3.9 is bad, but remember, this was the first Friday with the daylight savings time in effect. Last season in April and May the show was scoring in the low 4's on Tuesdays. I'm predicting at least a 4.5 for this Friday's season finale. Lots of promos planned again.

How could have last year's ratings been terrible when John was still with us? I think your mixed up. Look all I know if '8 Simple Rules' comes back for another season, it will be a miricle. I watch it, but I can't make anyone else I know watch it if primetime isn't their thing. The only primetime show that my friend watches is ABC's 'Lost'.

I don't know I am starting to get nervous again. The ratings seem to be going down every week. The promos did not help last week. I would tend to agree with the daylight savings time, but I see Joan of Arcadia got its usual 5.0 ratings while 8SR's rating dropped. If the whole hour was down I would not be concerned, but 8SR seems to be the only show in the hour that dropped again. I think this is a critical ratings week for 8SR. It is the show's last chance to impress ABC before the big decision comes.
katefandream04 04-11-2005, 06:30 PM Im just sick of everyone knocking the show for what it's worth. America does love 8SR,and the ratings are not going down. Not everyone saw the show on Friday, and that's why. Also, do you realize that there were reruns airing last month, and that's why no promos aired? The show has a chance,if you people just give it a chance. It was just one night that the show went down in ratings. I agree with Pavan,it will do well on Friday,if and only if you people give it a chance.

Who in the world is knocking the show. I love the show more than anybody. I have not missed one single show this season, be it new or repeat. However, the bottom line is the ratings are going down, down, down whether you accept that or not. That is what the network is seeing, and that is not a good thing when they are deciding whether to renew it or not. Even Pavan admitted the ratings are a little lower this time of year as compared to last year's Tuesday numbers.
Please don't lecture us here. We are supporters of the show here, and are the ones watching the show. Unfortunatley, not a lot of other people in this country are watching it with us. I really hope it gets a good rating this week, because this is its last chance to make an impression on the network. Believe me, it does not matter what we say or think about the show. Only ABC has a vote as to whether it continues.

katefandream04 04-16-2005, 08:56 PM Oh and the ratings only went down TWICE.
Chelsea 04-20-2005, 02:49 PM I want 8SR back BADLY, but one fact has to be faced: Getting your season finale bumped up a month so that ABC can show reruns of America's Funniest Home Videos is never a good thing. Though a date TBD, Airing from 8-9 on ABC is AFHV.
Brent88 04-20-2005, 03:27 PM Oh and the ratings only went down TWICE.
Ratings shouldn't go down at all... I understand every show has a bad week, but this show has had terrible ratings ALL season.
katefandream04 04-21-2005, 01:11 AM I am defending the show, and I am sick and tired of hearing you "beloved fans" making these uncalled for comments. Seriously, its getting on my nerves, and its annoying some of the people who do believe the show is doing well. Some of you may not care, but you are freaking out every other die hard fan the show has left. 8Sr does have a chance of surviving. It never had terrible ratings except for the After Party and The Sleepover, and the reason the finale didn't do as well as hoped, is because some of the original fans "ditched" the show. Majority of the season it had good ratings. Now we all shall wait for May 17 and find out the real outcome, instead of all these predictions. Sorry if this seems mad,but I'm just frustrated.

Less then Perfect soon to being cancelled
That Leaves My Wife and Kids & 8 Simple Rules with are both of these shows are coming back next season
The only ABC sitcoms I want back next season are "Less Than Perfect" and "8 Simple Rules". So saying that LTP is soon to be cancelled is not "Good News".
It's funny that "Hope & Faith" is the one show I didn't watch on TGIF this season and it's the only show that doesn't seem to be in any trouble.
It's obvious that Friday is not a high ratings night. ABC should understand that and base their decisions to renew or cancel certain shows knowing that. I mean Less Than Perfect did well on Tuesdays, not well on Fridays. So instead of cancelling it, they should move it (along with 8 Simple Rules) back to Tuesdays. Or keep it on Fridays, get it into syndication and see if ratings are good in syndication.
Heart Shaped Box 04-21-2005, 11:39 PM Hi all. I would just like to say that I never really watched 8SR before. One reason was because I never watched it when John was on it - and I was young and stupid. After everyone was telling me the show wasn't good when John died, I didn't really want to watch it. But I watched one episode of it a few weeks ago, and I really liked it. It's very funny, and I don't think it has bad ratings.
Does anyone know if there's an episode tomorrow night?
Chelsea 04-21-2005, 11:44 PM Does anyone know if there's an episode tomorrow night?
Unfortunately not...the season finale was last weekend, and AFHV reruns and/or specials will be airing in the 8-9 slot through the end of May sweeps....Reruns will probably start airing again in June (hopefully)
Heart Shaped Box 04-21-2005, 11:51 PM Oh man, that sucks! I was going to watch the season finale last week, but I went to our last school dance of the year. This sucks!
Superbowl 04-22-2005, 04:28 PM Everyone should go here and vote to keep 8 Simple Rules around. It may help if the network sees lots of votes to keep the show :
http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/save-our-shows.htm
Pavan 04-22-2005, 04:37 PM During today's The View, Kaley at the end said she doesn't know if the show will be back yet or not next fall, but she thinks it will be.
Superbowl 04-22-2005, 04:53 PM Kaley was optimistic on the View today.
Here's what she said on the View. Barbara Walters asked her if the showed was renewed, and she said (and I am paraphrasing):
"We don't know yet. We are hopeful. I think we are in good shape, but they don't tell you before right at the end even if you are in a hit show. Except for Desperate Housewives, they do not tell you until the end. I hope we are picked up, because I don't know what I would do. I only know this show, this is all I have been doing. I ride horses. Maybe I would take care of my horses. "
Scoobiedoo30 04-23-2005, 12:00 PM I said it Befor and I'll say it again I belive that ABC will renew
8 Simple Rules
Superbowl 04-23-2005, 12:47 PM I've said this before and I will say it again. Here is what gets me so ticked off at ABC. Here is the Hope and Faith rating last night without 8 SR as the lead in :
CBS moved in front at 9 p.m. with "JAG," 6.5/12. "Third Watch" averaged 6.0/11 for NBC. FOX's movie improved to 4.5/8 in its second hour, taking over third place. ABC dipped to 3.6/6 with an hour's worth of "Hope & Faith."
It was two repeats, but last week Hope and Faith got a 3.9 for a repeat with the 8SR lead in. What in the world is this network doing renewing Hope and Faith so quickly and putting 8SR on the bubble. This is a joke 8SR in the 8PM has better ratings, and should be renewed. If only one of the two were renewed than 8SR should be renewed and Hope and Faith should be cancelled. Considering 8SR has a worse time slot at 8 PM vs. 9PM for Hope and Faith it has better ratings. Also, 8SR only needs one more year for syndication and Hope and Faith needs two years. What a joke !!
Brent88 04-23-2005, 12:52 PM Sad...
I actually watched both episodes of Hope and Faith last night and IMO it's not near as good as 8SR. I didn't laugh near as much either. It's OK when nothing else is on, but it's not must-see TV for me.
Mr. Television 04-23-2005, 01:03 PM I was more hopeful a month ago of the show getting renewed but after reading articles in the paper and being around here, I'm not as sure. I guess I'm just used to favorite shows of mine getting canceled all the time.
Adamantium 04-23-2005, 02:50 PM I guess I'm just used to favorite shows of mine getting canceled all the time.
I know the feeling. TVAdam, big fan of these shows:
George & Leo - CBS - 1 Season
The Fugitive - CBS - 1 Season
Cursed/The Weber Show - NBC - 1 Season
DAG - NBC - 1 Season
The Tick - FOX - 1 Half Season
Thieves - ABC - 1 Half Season
Maybe It's Me - WB - 1 Season
Raising Dad - WB - 1 Season
The Ellen Show - CBS - 1 Season
Andy Richter Controls the Universe - FOX - 2 Half-Seasons
I was happy when both 8 Simple Rules and Less Than Perfect had been renewed for second seasons, because I had finally picked winners. Even though three seasons is still a good run (hey it's better than 1 year wonders) it's still not enough. Let's see a fourth season for both of these classic shows.
katefandream04 04-23-2005, 03:02 PM Seriously,I only watch H&F for Ted McGinley. I only tape it because of him. 8SR deserves another season, and I think Ted McGinley should join the 8SR cast.
Chelsea 04-23-2005, 04:20 PM ..By the way, for those of you curious: The AFHV rerun did a 4.9/9
Pavan 04-23-2005, 08:48 PM AFV did pretty decent at 8pm, so I'm guessing either that or Supernanny would move to the Fridays at 8pm slot next fall. But I still think ABC will NOT put a new comedy at all on Fridays. Why waste a new show then, when all of the new shows they have tried the past few seasons have not made it? Which means Hope & Faith and 8 Simple Rules will air in the 9pm hour. I think 8 Simple Rules should be at 9pm, since it is more family friendly than Hope & Faith, and would probably hold more of an audience from the 8pm hour than Hope & Faith. Hope & Faith would be a better lead-in for 20/20.

I tend to agree with that. Look how Hope and Faith got a better lead in number at 4.9 from AFV, and got a lower rating than when it was behind 8SR. It obviously is a bad lead out for a show like that. I think Hope and Faith may be on at 9:30 next year. I must admit, however, what worries me is they could move a show from Tuesday night (since three have already been renewed) like George Lopez or My Wife and Kids and put it on at 9:00. That would leave out 8SR. I still cannot believe they renewed Hope and Faith, but have 8SR on the fence. That is totally unfair.

That's what I'm thinking...
About a month ago I thought it'd be sitcoms 8-9, then either AFV or Supernanny at 9, but I've changed my tune a bit. I think the whole reason they are trying AFV at 8 is to see if they want it there in the Fall. The other show(Supernanny in this case) will likely go to Sundays at 7pm... it's family friendly and apparently has a large female audience. It'd be a strong competitor against 2 newsmagazines(football overruns half the season) and FOX sitcoms.
Auntie 04-23-2005, 09:17 PM (sighs), it's quite simple. It's all in the ratings. WHO WATCHES THE SHOW. And to be honest, I truely think(but this is my opinion), but I feel that a lot of people stopped watching because of what happened to John. That was me in the beginning, I didn't watch because it was just too painful. I'd always get this sicken feeling in my stomach evey time I have on the show only just for a few minutes, than I'd turn it off.) A lot of people watched '8 Simple Rules' in the beginning because of John. Now I do hope that the show is renewed because I'd love to see them in syndication because there's a few episodes in the first season that I never saw. But I'm prepared of the fact that, they may not make syndication.
Superbowl 05-02-2005, 05:25 PM Here is an excerpt from Marc Berman's weekly column :
We will bid adieu in the next few weeks to CBS' Everybody Loves Raymond and JAG, NBC's Third Watch and UPN's Star Trek: Enterprise. There are other shows, however, that are on the fence and may also be airing their final telecasts. Depending on how strong the pilots for next fall's series look, it could be curtains for established series like ABC's 8 Simple Rules and Less Than Perfect; CBS' Judging Amy, 60 Minutes Wednesday and Yes, Dear; NBC's American Dreams; Fox's Bernie Mac and Arrested Development (which already aired its last show of the season); and the WB's What I Like About You.
Does anyone know how strong the sitcom pilots for ABC are looking for next year ? That could determine 8 Simple Rules fate. Any word on the pilots ?
katefandream04 05-02-2005, 06:01 PM Well, they are releasing another show similar to Lost, but I don't think it will be able to compete with the original. Pilots have nothing to do with 8SR's fate...I think the only show that should be cancelled on Fridays is Less than Perfect. It was getting worse ratings than 8SR got this season.
Superbowl 05-04-2005, 07:50 AM Another idiot critic buries 8 Simple Rules. Look at this excerpt from the NY Daily News :
Dump these shows :
"8 Simple Rules," ABC. There's no longer any reason for this show to exist. The characters have moved on after John Ritter's death; so should ABC.
http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/ent_radio/story/306128p-261919c.html
I already wrote this idiot at davidbianculli@comcast.net. I gave him a piece of my mind. I am so sick of all these critics, who don't even watch this show anymore burying it. I hope ABC does not listen to them, but something tells me they may listen.
katefandream04 05-04-2005, 08:46 AM I really don't think abc cares about the critics. Most of these critics haven't tuned in since Goodbye. Don't these critics understand that people move on in real life?
Raisingdad2004 05-04-2005, 11:47 AM Networks couldn't give a hoot about critics, Shows like Three's Company were not always adored by the critics but their ratings spoke wonders.
Brent88 05-04-2005, 12:14 PM 2 weeks from today we'll know for sure.
I see ABC cancelling Rodney and LTP and MAYBE My Wife and Kids(since George Lopez and Jim are coming back). That leaves 8SR and Hope and Faith for Fridays at 9 and 930 IMO with AFV likely going to 8... ABC can then surround Lopez and Jim with new comedies on Tuesday at 8 and 930.
Mr. Television 05-04-2005, 12:16 PM I really don't think abc cares about the critics. Most of these critics haven't tuned in since Goodbye. Don't these critics understand that people move on in real life?
Yea. None of ABC's comedies are critical favorites.
Superbowl 05-04-2005, 03:45 PM Guys, just for fun look at these ratings for last night for George Lopez and My Wife and Kids :
"My Wife and Kids" (households: 4.1/7, #T11; adults 18-49: 1.9, #15), "George Lopez" (households: 3.9/6, #13; adults 18-49: 2.0, #T13),
Considering 8 Simple Rules is on Friday at 8:00, which is a terrible time slot is their ratings really any worse than these ? And Hope and Faith is equally bad.
Brent88 05-04-2005, 03:52 PM ABC needs a makeover on Tuesday... ASAP. Now I know why I am not surprised ABC hasn't renewed one of the 8pm comedies yet(MWAK is toast IMO).
ABC has SO many holes to fill(yes I know they've got DH, Lost, Anatomy, don't preach), but that's ALL they've got that wins it's timeslot every week despite the competition.
Edit: Kids did better than Lopez. I am shocked. This was with a weak NBC filler too!!! If NBC really gets competitive there next season, we should just bury ABC Tuesday right now.

Look, I'd love to see '8 Simple Rules' come back for another season, but let me just say again people, be prepared that they may not. Or if they do come back, there is a possibility that right in the middle of the season, they could just yank them out of the timeslot completely. I've seen it done before with other shows. I really don't mean to be so negitive here, but I'm just only facing reality here the show has not been the same since John's passing. Case closed.
Auntie 05-04-2005, 05:51 PM Futher more, I've noticed in the past that someone else made a comment that they had said that it was due to 'Desperate Housewives' due to bad ratings for '8 Simple Rules', not that I'm defending that show 'DH', I myself never watch it, but you cannot blame another show for the poor ratings for another show('8SR') that is on an entirely different night that '8SR'. Everyone tuned into '8 Simple Rules' mainly to see John Ritter(correct me if I'm wrong), he was the show they have tried(the cast) their best to bring it back but it will never be the same, not the way it was with John..:jack
Auntie 05-04-2005, 05:58 PM Also, just to inform everyone here, on the futoncritic.com, if you click on 'on break, fate (T.B.T.), '8 Simple Rules' is in that list, but it is not in the list for yet to be renewed for next season.

That's the problem... Jim(which has been renewed) is the best comedy(ratings wise) on ABC and it's not that impressive. I will be surprised if ABC does nothing but cut down on comedies yet again in the Fall. George Lopez, Jim, 8SR, and Hope and Faith and maybe 2 new ones.
Auntie 05-06-2005, 12:01 PM I really think that everyone here should put it to rest. The show itself is on life support. Give it up. There is life after '8 Simple Rules' you know. We all would like to see it renewed, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

What is the status of My Wife and Kids ? I never hear anything about that show either way. I never saw it listed as on the bubble, nor have I seen it safe for renewal. I never watch that show, but I was just curious how it fits into the ABC sitcom scheme of things.
Brent88 05-06-2005, 10:37 PM It's not been renewed... a lot of people think it could be cancelled. It's certainly "on the bubble" since George Lopez and Jim are coming back. I think the only night where ABC will put new sitcoms on will be Tuesdays and likely 2(assuming 8SR stays) meaning Kids and Rodney must go.

Yeah, the only thing that concerns me with My Wife and Kids is it goes into syndication next Fall, and the network may want to keep it on the network schedule to promote its syndication value. Otherwise, I think it would be gone, too. This could be important, because 8SR could be battling that show for the last spot on the Fall schedule.
katefandream04 05-07-2005, 08:17 AM But there is more of a chance that MWAK and LTP will be cancelled. Those shows aren't even funny anymore, and the ratings are even more worse than 8SR.
Superbowl 05-07-2005, 06:48 PM Here is the season finale ratings for Hope and Faith :
"CSI," 7.1/12, kept CBS in front at 9 p.m., while "Third Watch" ended its six-year run on NBC with a 6.1/11. ABC stayed in third with the hour-long season finale of "Hope & Faith," 4.1/7.
For the last time, can someone explain to me why Hope and Faith is so safe for renewal, and 8 Simple Rules is on the bubble ? When taking into account the 8PM vs. 9PM time slots the 8SR season finale got the same ratings as the Hope and Faith season finale. Also, Hope and Faith needs two more years for syndication, and 8SR only needs one. There is no way Hope and Faith will last two more years.
Brent88 05-07-2005, 07:34 PM The ratings for everything were awful last night... what has happened to Fridays? :(
Mr. Television 05-07-2005, 07:41 PM Jag and 3rd Watch have ended and 8 Simple Rules is in doubt. I don't know what I'm going to watch on Friday next season.

Like I said before, all hype. ABC doesn't consider 8SR on the bubble, these stupid TV writers do, and everyone belives it. I think both 8SR and H&F will be around to complete the minimum requirements for syndication.

Well, all I can say is if Hope and Faith is on next year than 8SR definitely should be back. The ratings are basically the same. Personally, I think they would do well together in the 9-10PM slot with either one of them leading into the other. I think it might be a pretty good hour for ABC. Much better than Hope and Faith with Less Then Perfect did, or what 8SR did with Complete Savages for a time. They should take their best two Friday night shows and team them up.
Superbowl 05-08-2005, 09:10 PM Someone on the Kaley Cuoco website says that they know someone who works at ABC, and this person says 8 Simple and Rules and Less Than Perfect will definitely not be back. This person also said that Hope and Faith will definitely be back. The poster on the Kaley Cuoco website said they cannot identify this person, because their brother works for ABC, and this information could cost him his job.
I hate to say it but it makes sense logically, because 8SR and LTP were both removed from the May sweeps, and Hope and Faith was part of the May sweeps. And now word comes from the Drudge Report that Commander and Chief has been picked up. I hate to say it, but it looks pretty bleak for 8SR.
Pavan 05-08-2005, 10:07 PM And now word comes from the Drudge Report that Commander and Chief has been picked up. I hate to say it, but it looks pretty bleak for 8SR.
Commander in Chief has nothing to do with 8SR.
