View Full Version : Saturday Night Live Has Hit Rock Bottom
teddybare 02-13-2005, 07:00 AM I have been an SNL fans since its glory yrs in the 70's. but if the writers cant come up with nothing better than a skit about a monkey that craps in its hands and throws it at celebrities they have hit rock bottom. I mean make me laugh dont gross me out.
Pentimento 02-13-2005, 11:52 AM I had that same thought last night, particularly since it was the first sketch after the opening. Viewers used to have to wait for the final 5-10 minutes of SNL to see something that lame and disgusting. I felt bad for Jason Bateman. Heck, even the monkey looked embarrassed.
Dr. Jazz 02-13-2005, 01:43 PM I don't think the sketch was centered around the monkey at all, it was clearly a funny but unusual way to feature Darryl Hammond's "Sean Connery" since they don't do the "Celebrity Jeopardy!" sketches any longer. I think their goal was to put Hammond's Connery in a strange situation such as that & get laughs out of his reactions to the monkey.
barwars 02-13-2005, 01:59 PM Jason Bateman was great, but that sketch was horrid.
IMO, this was one of the best episodes ever for "Weekend Update."
CheersChild4life 02-13-2005, 08:57 PM Aww well I guess it's time to switch to Madtv, just kidding! Yeah I actually saw the sketch :( <that is all I have to say.
BTW- It's nice to see you back barwars
Skywalker 02-13-2005, 09:58 PM That monkey poop sketch was the funniest thing I've seen on SNL in years.
dandelion wine 02-13-2005, 10:15 PM It's been a long time since I laughed at an SNL sketch. Last night, the monkey one had me laughing.. hard.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 02-13-2005, 10:35 PM As Lorne Michaels says...the longest 4 years of your life are in highschool, or even college...and that tends to be the time period of the show you like the best. It doesn't mean it's any worse today. I don't think it's ever changed from watching repeats blah blah. The faces and writers have change, but SNL is SNL.
So maybe the monkey skit wasn't the BEST...but I thought that was a damn good episode last night :roller:

How'd you see it if MadTV was on :grr:
Yeah anyway, that's what Comedy Central is for. MadTV repeats. SNL you NEED to see live.

I switched on and off between the two. I like them both too much to choose just one to watch!

lol ohhh. Yeah, I love MadTV...but there's something missing from it that SNL has. Don't know what but wtueVR.
Zebra 3 02-14-2005, 03:49 PM I just love Darryl Hammond's characters and they should use the Pres. Bush character more often. As for SNL hitting rock bottom goes, that probably happen sometime in the 80s.
Caffeine King 02-14-2005, 08:17 PM Hasn't SNL been at rock bottom for many years now?
Mr. Television 02-16-2005, 04:04 AM Hasn't SNL been at rock bottom for many years now?
I haven't watched SNL in over 10 years. LOL
SNL is AWFUL now – simply HORRID!
It was riding a high a few years back (1996-2000), but then all the people left. Everything after 2001 has been pure crap! ITA that it's rock bottom right now. But what is down, must come up again. SNL was bad around 1994-1995, then they revamped the cast and it got wonderful. I hope something like this happens soon - because it's SO painful to watch right now.

I suggested the same thing and got shot down for it by a SNL supporter.
Geez, I thought the monkey crap was pretty funny!
But I really wanted to see RICK, RICK!!!!! My favorite scetch of the season! :mango

ahahaha I love her
Yeah, but the above posts are totally an example of what I said before. It's no different than it ever has been, really. I don't know why people can't see that.

I'm a diehard SNL fan, but I have to disagree with you there.
Currently, there are no characters whom would be able to carry there own movie. Hell, only a small bunch of the actors would be able to carry a movie, period. In the early days there were the Coneheads and The Blues Brothers, and The Bees (who should have gotten a movie). In the 90s they had Wayne's World, and later -- Superstar and Night At The Roxbury.
The current cast has nothing.

What you couldn't listen to 2 hours of RICK RICK!! And I wish they left superstar and roxbury on the small screen. 2 of the stupidest movies ever made, imo!
It’s different because the current cast doesn’t have the same dynamic or charisma that the previous cast had. You can have the same writing (even though the writing has taken a nosedive in recent times – into a sophomoric abyss), but if you don’t have the right people doing it, it won’t come off good. What if Ally Sheedy had gotten Jennifer Grey’s role in “Dirty Dancing”? The same script, but would it have been as great a movie???
I would not say this is one of SNL's best years, but it's not the worst.
It seems to be a transitional year.
Maybe they can get Ashlee Simpson as a recurring character. She sure was funny! :singer:
Caffeine King 02-17-2005, 10:45 PM Wanna know what sucks (IMO)
Is that SNL spawns a movie for their characters every so often yet MADtv has some hilarious characters yet no movie.
I can see a It's A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD Movie with Dot, Vancome Lady, etc all coming together (that sounds lame but I'd like to see at least one movie spawned from MADtv)
;) fyi, Mo Collins will be guest starring this Saturday night on FOX at 11 PM on MADtv in case you guys who haven't seen MADtv wanna get a taste of it and it's characters (Mo left last season :( )

Hahah that would be great, I'd be the first one to see it! Anyway yeah I know it's a SNL thread but you should watch Madtv saturday, even if just for a half hour before SNL, come on just watch a little! (IMO)
barwars 02-20-2005, 02:06 AM MUCH better episode tonight.
TheHappyBurgerMeister 03-27-2005, 03:32 AM This season is definitely very bad! Every week there's a new episode I watch it just to see if MAYBE it will be funny but I'm obviously wrong. It's gone very down hill since Jimmy Fallon left.
How can you people think that monkey poop sketch was FUNNY?!? I can see like 5 year old laughing at that but not older people! Sad.
I'm starting to watch MAD TV a lot more now!
teddybare 03-27-2005, 05:06 AM Hey Happy I tell you what to watch for laughs late night on Fridays from 12am to 2am tvland carries those great early 80's reruns of SCTV they are hysterical funniest show on tv.
JourneyMan 03-29-2005, 05:08 PM SNL has peaks and valleys as far as its casts. It hit high points with the Spade-Sandler-Farley-Hartman era, then the Ferrell years, but now it is pitiful. MadTV blows it away week after week. Stephanie Weir on MadTV is awesome.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 03-29-2005, 11:48 PM It's just at a low point. It's always done that, yet people don't learn to give it a chance.
teddybare 03-30-2005, 03:10 AM Well when Darrell Hammonds leaves the show he's been on a long time now. They might as well pull the plug on it because their is nobody remotely as funny as Darrell or can do as many characters as he can.
Mikado 07-11-2005, 03:04 AM SNL has sucked since Eddie Murphy left
