View Full Version : What was Fred really drinking?
teddybare 02-12-2005, 09:39 PM Ive often wondered what fred was really drinking on the show especially those awful hangover remedies. As far as ripple or any kind of red or grape wine you could use grape or crandberry juice. Vodka probably clear water. Now the canned beer is a real puzzler. because to the best of my knowlege he always drank straight out of the can. Those hangover remedies looked awful but they werent but what was he drinking?Any Ideas
Brieannas21 03-09-2005, 01:29 AM I know on GoodTimes James (John Amos) would drink real beer on the show, but I don't know about Fred.

senor boogie woogi 03-09-2005, 01:28 PM Hola!
Fred's bar was on top of a bureau with that funny drawer you had to bang on to open, where he kept his reading glasses.
Fred always had booze around, the most famous being ripple, some god awful drink only drank by poor blacks in the ghetto. Fred also drank a lot of beer (and used it once to get rid of a bum from his house). He also liked to cook, and stole two superfly chicks once from Rollo and Lamont when he brought over a pot of soul food and two bottles of ripple.

jc3nvegas 05-10-2005, 12:45 AM Ripple was an early version of the now popular wine cooler.
teddybare 05-10-2005, 03:44 AM Ripple was strong though but theres no way they were drinking real Ripple because as many takes as they had to do Fred would have been too drunk to act

Do they still make Ripple? If so, where is it available? -- Craig Pasley, Matthews, N.C.
Craig, you are a man of taste.
Very, very questionable taste.
Gallo does not make Ripple anymore. The brand died as the California winery uncorked more upscale vintages.
But Ripple, which filled brown bags and undiscerning gullets from the '60s to the '80s, left an enduring, if notorious, mark. (On the '70s sitcom "Sanford and Son," Redd Foxx used to mix champagne and Ripple and call it "champipple.")
Gallo still brews a stronger, sister vintage in small supply: "What's the word? Thunderbird!" (That was the old ad slogan for the skull-knocking, alcohol-fortified wine.)

If Ripple was anything like Thunderbird, man... it is strong! Another cheap (and very strong) wine out now is Cisco. It will make you slap yo mama!

Brieannas21 05-16-2005, 03:26 PM Yeah Thunderbird is strong, isn't it a whisky? Ripple had to have been weak if they were drinking it like that.
ATLboy 05-21-2005, 11:06 AM Thunderbird is a wine. A very strong one. They even bottle it in wine cooler size bottles but it says on the bottle that it contains 3 servings!

Unfortunately no photos of Ripple!
synistr 06-21-2012, 08:24 AM sorry to bring back all these old threads but I just joined and didnt think there was anyone who is/was as much a S&S and Redd Foxx fanatic as I am.
I believe Redd really drank Ripple on the set because there were shots of the actual bottles with the label. Ripple when poured looks like sparkling red grape juice that you can get in the stores today. Ripple was carbonated....so in a lot of the scenes I believe it was Ripple. In some scenes it may have been grape juice if you didnt see it fizz.
duckie 06-21-2012, 11:16 AM No, the booze wasnt real. You really think their gonna allow the actors to get drunk on the set? Now im sure Fred had a flask hid somewhere, so he could take a swig while no one was watching. They used juice, tea and other liquids that resemble the real stuff.
loaferman 06-21-2012, 02:13 PM Ripple was strong though but theres no way they were drinking real Ripple because as many takes as they had to do Fred would have been too drunk to act
Take a good look at both Fred and LaMont in the episodes where LaMont wears sunglasses all the time. Although, I don't think alcohol was the issue. At times they are pretty obviously reading their lines.
rollo's girl 06-23-2012, 10:47 PM I bet a nickel if Redd wanted the real stuff, they drank the real stuff
Cloud9 Lorraine 06-24-2012, 10:23 AM I don't think the booze was real, but I wouldn't be surprised if on some occasions Redd had some of the real stuff stashed in those bottles.

ZZ Top wrote a song about this wine, "Thunderbird," and it's on their Fandago! album.
dbiggs 06-18-2014, 09:31 PM I don't know if that was Ripple inside that bottle, but that was an actual ripple bottle!
