I have to say JoMarie Payton was the best Harriette? Judyann Elder was OK, but JoMarie did a better job acting as Harriette!!

Definitely Jo Marie Payton. But I have a question. Why did she leave the show? I tuned into it on CBS and was very confused(I hadn't watched the show for a while) and I saw a young kid--under 10, thinking maybe it was a new Richie but it was some kid name 3J, I think. The show was very confusing if you didn't watch it in a while, I guess! http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Yes, we also preffer Jo Marie as Harriette... Maybe cause she was first, and we got used to her at the show...

About the new guy, yes, he's 3J, a new child at the Family, but not the new Richie, he was played by Bryton at the show til the end. In fact, both are friends at the show. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/redface.gif)

Judyann Elder did a great job taking over the role of Harriette Winslow. However I think we are all used to JoMarie Payton since she played the role from 1987 to December 1997.(I included her time on Perfect Strangers when I did the time span.)

Will the real Harriette please stand up? Judyanne was so-so, but how could we ever get used to a face different from Jomarie's. Apparently, she left because she felt "creatively stifled."

JoMarie Payton is the best Mrs. Winslow! She developed and created a loving and strong woman! You go girl!

JoMarie was better. She was there first and for the longest by far. I don't see how anyone can accept anyone else playing the Hariette Winslow role.

Are you kidding? JoMarie Payton-Noble played the role of Harriette Winslow for 10 years! (including "Perfect Strangers"). She left the show (because she thought she didn't play the same Harriette Winslow, and I totaly agree with her), and when she left it was like the end of the show to me and to many more. Judyian Elder was a lousy Harriette. I couldn't watch Family Matters any more. to me, it was like Carl took another wife....

I've never even SEEN one with Judyann Elder. Does TBS have those episodes? I would suppose it's 9th-10th season, correct? Or is it just 10th season?

there is no 10th season, "Family Matters" had only 9 seasons.
Judyann Elder took over the role of Harriette in the episode "Crazy for you(1)". she stayed for the last 9 eps of season 9, aka the last 9 eps of the show.

Is there any doubt? It has to be JoMarie Payton!

To clerify, during the Perfect Strangers years through the early 90's she was known as JoMarie Payton-France later she dropped the France and picked up Noble.

Did it have anything to do with Divorcing/Marrying, or whatever?

Obviously Jo Marie Payton, who and why would anyone choose Judyann Eldar?

This is a no brainer JoMarie Payton hands down. Once she was replaced by Judyann Elder I could not even watch the show anymore.

when someone plays a character for 9 years its hard to accept another actor/actress playing a part that wasn't hers from the begining

Jo-Marie Payton will always be 'Harriet Winslow' in my eyes.

I think the producers should've given her the common courtesy to listen to her ideas since she was an important member of the cast.

If it wasn't for her there would have been no Family Matters. They took her from Perfect Strangers and made a whole new show from it.

I did like Jo-Marie Payton alot better, no offense to Mr.s Elder she is a good actress seen her in other movies and tv shows, but she did not fit the character for Family Matters.

Imagine how the cast members felt when they had to refer to Judyann Elder as Harriette on the show, I mean after 9 yrs of Jo Marie Payton, now all of a sudden they have this completely different actress.

Especially Reginald Vel Johnson who had the most interaction with JoMarie Payton.

Why was she the only character they recast, many other characters left the show and they didn't bother to recast them.

harriet was a main character an important character she wasn't rachel, richie,or even estelle besides anyone can agree there were many times throughout FAMILY MATTERS that it seemed like the urkel show but this happens when people like a certain character

Well for someone who was supposed to be a main character they sure gave her little to no attention in the later seasons. They should have just written Harriette out, she already wasn't getting that much attention anyway. :(

that was intresting maybe they should have written her off but how just disappear like the other characters should they have killed her like edith bunker how could they have done it

Since there were only a few eps left, they could have just not had Harriette in the last few eps, every once in a while they could have mentioned her, but since the show was ending anyway, there was no need to recast her.

JoMarie Payton was hands down the best Harriette. Elder sucked. They should have just written Harriette out of the show when Payton left. They could have said she has a full time job or something and she's never home anymore.

They had no problem with the other characters just dissapearing.

The 10th season would have sucked, we would've seen a whole year of Judyann Elder as Harriette.

after seeing the final episode performance it would have been dreadful to see her play that character for a whole season thak you for cancelation

I agree that JoMarie was the better Harriette. They should have just had Harriette still on the show but not seen, THe other characters could have still talked about her like she was still living there but we just wouldn't see her.

Kind of like on Diff'rent Strokes, there were a few eps that Arnold didn't appear in but at least they mentioned why he wasn't there.

Jo Marie Payton and Mr. Winslow just fit together. They really felt like a married couple. The other lady seemed like a school teacher coming in.

One funny thing about Payton playing Harriette is that every once in a while on the show that would make some jokes about how old she looks, like the time when that guy thought she was Laura's grandma, but they couldn't make any jokes like that with Elder, she looked too young to even be Carl's wife.

JoMarie Payton is the best but when they put the other lady in it it just didn't feel like a family matters to me :(
