Hi everyone, I make floorplans of houses and I even did one for the house on Roseanne. I was watching the Dick Van Dyke Show today and I decided to make one of the house from it. I don' watch the show alot, usually I'm at school when it's on, but, I've been sick with a fever for the past few days. It isn't perfect, if you see something wrong, please tell me.

That's really good! The only things I think might be off are the master bath (isn't it opposite the door from the living room, past the beds?) and I think there's a hall from the kitchen to Ritchie's room. In the episode My Husband is Not a Drunk, I think Rob takes a glass of water to Ritchie (or starts to, anyway) without going back through the living room.

Otherwise, I think you've nailed it.

Zachary,
Basically, good job :tiphat: ! But as is so often the case with my own ideas, someone has already accomplished this task. Artist/Author, Mark Bennett has published a flawless floorplan of the Petrie home as well, as many others, in his book, TV Sets. Fantasy Blueprints Of TV Homes. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1579121071/qid=1108052236/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/103-1524448-7743024) . Still, it's a worthwhile endeavor if you enjoy it.
There are several mistakes I noticed off the bat in yours, and it would be easier for me to refer you to the book than try to explain them one by one. I chose not to post a scan of Bennett's work because I think it would be unfair to him, and his book isn't that expensive anyway. If you're into this, it would be a fun book and good referrence source for you :winkgrin .

Thanks, I'd never heard of that book before. I'll look into purchasing it.

Considering you don't see the show often (oh, you poor deprived dear!) I think you did a good job!

That is so interesting! I've often thought about the layout of the Petries house and how much I like it. I like how it flows and the size of the family room. I've often thought that if I ever built a house, I would model if after the Petrie's. Zachary2, I love your hobby, but like Steve, I saw several mistakes as any devoted fan of the show would. Still, not bad for a neophyte fan.

Cool diagram. However, as mentioned, there are many errors. See if I caught them all:

>> As previously said, there should be a hall that leads from the kitchen to Ritchie's room, and you've got the Master Bath in the wrong place. It should be at the south end (bottom) of the plans.

>> The kitchen swinging door is in the wrong place. The "island" in the kitchen is on the other side of the door.

>> There shoud be a portion marked off for "Dining Room" in the NE corner of the Living Room. (And you should also include an entry for "Appearing & Disappearing Piano is located HERE --->", with an arrow to the piano that's only there when appropriate.) LOL. :)

>> The GUEST ROOM isn't right either. There's definitely an entrance to a bathroom off of the Guest Room, because in the Stacey episodes, Rob at one point looks in at Stacey and notices him sleeping in the bathtub...saying "Don't turn on the water". So, obviously a bathtub is accessible via this Guest Room.

>> Also: There's a kind of a hallway in the kitchen that leads to the garage that I don't see on your plans.

Regarding the house, can someone tell me how many episodes claim the house is located at 148 Bonnie Meadow Road vs. the alternate address of 448 Bonnie Meadow Road?

I believe there might even be one reference to "Bonnie Meadow Lane" too.

Good day. :)

And remember, kids, you will be able to buy all 5 seasons of TDvDS on DVD on May 24th, 2005, for approx. $175 (not bad). :) :) ........

Wow, alot of mistakes, but, like I said, I'm usually gone when the show is on. It mostly came from yesterday's (2/10) episode and memory from others.
My floorplan of the Roseanne house is probably more accurate.

...there's also a little 'window that looks through from the Dining area to the kitchen (over the kitchen sink). Very essential for some scenes, such as the one in "The Curse of the Petrie People" when Millie passes the dishes through to Laura and lays them on top of the pin. ..but i don't know if that would appear on a floor plan? i suppose it would.

I had that thought, too, but then Stacey was an exceptional sleepwalker. If he could perform entire comedy routines in his sleep, I think he could manage a little trip down a short hallway into the bathroom. Since the guest room was never actually shown (or was it?), viewers can only speculate.

Given that this floorplan was based mostly on memory and the recent viewing of just one episode, I think it's pretty impressive. I've seen every episode multiple times, and I doubt that I could have done a much better reconstruction.

I received the book "TV Sets," today and it is GREAT! I am really enjoying looking at the blueprints of the houses and towns. Of course, I went straight to the Petrie house and I must say, I think he captured it well. He does offer the caveat that in some episodes, the directors changed floorplans for the flow of the story and I think that is exactly the case with "Man From My Uncle," when Mr. Bond is looking out from Ritchie's bedroom window into Mr. Gerard's house. I think Mr. Bennett got it right, that Ritchie's bedroom window in fact faces the Helper's house. Thanks, Steve, for this recommendation. I love it!

I love that book. I used to keep it near where I sit when I watch tv so I could refer to it as I watched classic shows.

Lolac,
They must be very observant on Twilo, because I couldn't think of a single episode where that "change" took place, but you've nailed it!

I've done that too. And isn't life wonderful when such simple things can bring so much joy?

LOL It's so nice to know that I am not the only one who does stuff like that. My husband thinks I'm crazy for even going online to talk about old tv shows. He'd really think I was nuts if he realized that I was analyzing floorplans while watching tv.

I showed my husband the book last night, half expecting him to think that I am crazy  but he actually thought it was interesting. He liked the "Beverly Hillbillies" mansion and the home from "My Three Sons."

I was looking at the Petrie house plan again today and was a little disappointed to realize that there is no drawing of the basement with it's pool table and large rock! Maybe he never saw those two episodes!

I think you'll all enjoy this link, even if you still haven't bought the book (TV Sets: Fantasy Blueprints of Classic TV Homes (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1579121071/qid%3D1108052236/sr%3D2-1/ref%3Dpd%5Fka%5Fb%5F2%5F1/002-6601839-1160852)). It's an interview with it's author, and they mention TDVDS very fondly :) .
But don't just read the transcript, click on "Listen Now" and actually read along with the recording!

Wasn't that great, Lolac?
You're welcome. You know, even though it's an old audio, it just goes to show how very popular this show still is. Too bad you couldn't hear it. Mark Bennett sounds so sleepy :sleep2: .
I love the part where he told his therapist he couldn't go into a 12-step program because he watches TDVDS every night  !

I bet he did sound sleepy! It sounds like his brain is fried from alcohol and TV, but that measure of genius did manage to seep through! Maybe he can join his 12 step program now that TDVDS is out on DVD!
