ABC NEWS AND THE UFO PHENOMENON --
"PETER JENNINGS REPORTING -- UFO: SEEING IS BELIEVING,"
A TWO-HOUR PRIMETIME SPECIAL, AIRS THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 24 ON ABC

Almost 50% of Americans, according to recent polls, and millions of people elsewhere in the world believe that UFOs are real. For many it is a deeply held belief. For decades there have been sightings of UFOs by millions and millions of people. It is a mystery that only science can solve, and yet the phenomenon remains largely unexamined. Most of the reporting on this subject by the mainstream media holds those who claim to have seen UFOs up to ridicule.

"Peter Jennings Reporting - UFO: Seeing is Believing" takes a fresh look at the phenomenon. "As a journalist," says Jennings, "I began this project with a healthy dose of skepticism and as open a mind as possible. After almost 150 interviews with scientists, investigators, and with many of those who claim to have witnessed unidentified flying objects, there are important questions that have not been completely answered -- and a great deal not fully explained." The two-hour special, to be broadcast in HDTV, airs THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 24 (8:00-10:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

"Peter Jennings Reporting - UFO: Seeing is Believing" reports on the entire scope of the UFO experience, from the first famous sighting by Kenneth Arnold in 1947 to the present day. The program draws on interviews with police officers, pilots, military personnel, scientists and ordinary citizens who give extraordinary accounts of encounters with the unexplained. Also included are the voices of professional skeptics about UFOs, including scientists who are leading the search for life forms elsewhere in the universe.

The program explores the facts behind the enduring mystery of the incident at Roswell, New Mexico, and looks into the strange stories of alien abductions. Among the UFO cases presented:

* Minot Air Force Base, October 1968 -- Sixteen airmen on the ground and the crew of an airborne B-52 witness a massive unidentified object hovering near the base.
* Phoenix, Arizona, March 1997 -- Hundreds witness a huge triangular craft moving slowly over the city.
* St. Clair County, Illinois, January 2000 - Police officers in five adjoining towns all independently report witnessing a giant craft with multiple bright lights moving silently across the sky at a very low altitude.

Today, if you report a UFO to the U.S. government, you will be informed that the Air Force conducted a 22-year investigation which ended in 1969 and concluded that UFOs are not a threat to national security and are of no scientific interest. But as one of the world's leading theoretical physicists says, "You simply cannot dismiss the possibility that some of these UFO sightings are actually sightings from some object created by... a civilization perhaps millions of years ahead of us in technology."

"Peter Jennings Reporting - UFO: Seeing is Believing" is produced by PJ Productions and Springs Media for ABC News. Mark Obenhaus and Tom Yellin are the executive producers.

I was told this special might have hard evidence that there is indeed other life out there...

That would be huge - but unless they produce an alien craft I don't know what they could call hard evidence. It sounds interesting.

Minot is only about an hour or so from here. :D They said it was 1969, not 1968. Maybe I heard it wrong...

I might tune in.

I saw UFO in Seattle with Judas Priest opening in 1979. That show ROCKED!!!
Michael Schenker is one of the greatest guitarists out there. I also saw UFO open for Rush in 1977 and for Blue Oyster Cult in 1978.

Lights Out
from Lights Out, 1977

Wind blows back and the batons charging
It winds all the way
Right to the butt of my gun
Maybe now your time has come

From the back streets there's a rumblin'

Smell of anarchy
No more nice time, bright boy shoe shines
Pie in the sky dreams

* lights out, lights out in London
Hold 'em tight 'til the end
Better now you know we'll never
Wait 'til tomorrow
Lights out, lights out in London
Hold 'em tight 'til the end
God knows when i'm comin' on [my] run

Heaven help those who help themselves
That's the way it goes
The frightening thoughts of what's been taught
And now it shows

* repeat

[instrumental]

* repeat

You keep comin', there's no runnin'
Tried a thousand times
Under your feet grass is growin'
Time we said goodbye

* repeat

Lights out, lights out in London

Lights out, lights out in London

Ratings were decent, better than ABC usually gets.

CBS established its lead at 8 p.m. with "Survivor: Palau," 12.4/19. ABC's "Peter Jennings Reporting" special on UFOs was second at 8.3/12, beating the 6.8/10 average for "Joey" and "Will & Grace" on NBC. "The O.C." posted a 4.8/7 for FOX. UPN took fifth with "WWE Smackdown!," and The WB trailed with the movie "Ever After."

"CSI" grabbed the night's biggest audience at 9 p.m., scoring a 17.1/25 for CBS. "The Apprentice" moved NBC into second, but its 9.1/14 was a little off its usual performance. ABC's Jennings special was third. FOX got decent numbers (5.1/7) from its special "Stars Without Makeup." UPN averaged 3.3/5 with the second half of "Smackdown!," while The WB's movie couldn't move out of sixth.

Zap2it is vague.

Here are the details on the ratings:

8-10 p.m. 8.0/11 overnight rating; 11.68 million viewers; 3.2/8 adult 18-49 rating.

In the 8pm half hour the special had 12.4 million viewers and beat Joey. Final numbers should be in later today or Monday.

I wasn't too impressed by the show either. I've seen more interesting UFO stuff on Discovery Channel and TLC.

Same old, same old. :sleep2: Nothing I haven't seen before. Kind of disappointing. I was expecting some new revelations, or something.

So I guess we didn't miss much. It reminds me of when I was a kid, me and my brother saw a preview of what HAD to be the coolest movie on the planet, "The Giant Spider Invasion!!!" Wow, spiders from outer space the size of a water tower were going EATING people, and we thought, WOW, we got to see that one when it hits the theater! But a year or so later, I got to see it on late night t.v. on ABC, and I was so disappointed--it mostly showed these two scientists talking about black holes--and not much spider action. It took me a while to figure out that the one I saw was edited for t.v., and that's why it was kinda boring. I stayed up on a school night for THIS??

I nodded off for a while too. The show didn't grab me like I thought it would.

Then the plan worked.

You see? It's a giant conspiracy!

Space aliens working in conjunction with ABC news and Peter Jennings deliberatly made the special extra boring so viewers would either change the channel or loose consciousness!

So for now, the coverup continues...

The truth is out there.

;)
