Summary of JJ and Beth scenes from "For Richer, For Poorer," for those interested. This is only about half the episode, up to right before the day of the wedding. I thought I'd post it since it took me a while. Part 2 should be along soon.
At the beginning we learn that JJ and Beth are looking at a house, and Jack is offered a bribe if he agrees to vote yes on zoning permits that would put up a mall that would be about 3 blocks away from Pryor TV and Radio. Jack turns it down.
Beth and Helen in kitchen, Helen says the forecast is scattered showers, as she feeds Johnny, and Beth says she hopes it doesn’t rain on her wedding day. Helen tells her not to think about it and asks her about the house as JJ comes in. Beth says it’s perfect, it’s 10 minutes away without traffic. JJ says traffic is terrible. Beth says that it’s a ranch style, which means it’s a single floor plan. JJ says it’d be cheaper to buy a ranch, Beth asks who said we can’t afford it. JJ says he’s kidding. Beth goes on about the house, and JJ asks for a towel because it gets messy feeding Johnny.
Will comes in with the mail, tells JJ he got something with a stamp on it from Vietnam. Will’s being kind of annoying and keeps asking why JJ can’t move back in here. JJ says he just can’t. Phone rings, JJ answers, it’s Paul O’Bannon telling Helen he’s made it to Toronto.
Someone singing “That’s How Strong My Love Is” at the Lair, as JJ reads the letter from Vietnam, which includes a picture of him with Ahn.
At Pete’s, Tommy is trying on suit for wedding and asks if there’s any beer. JJ says yeah, but they have to hurry, he has to meet Meg at the church soon. Tommy asks about the house, it’s in a pricey neighborhood. JJ says down payment is $4,000, Tom whistles. JJ says Beth’s used to this kind of living. Tom says champagne taste on a beer budget. Tom asks if he has the money, JJ says his dad offered to help, but tells him about the letter.
At the store, Beth comes in, Henry says hello and thanks her for inviting his family, and they’re looking forward to it. She says so are we. Jack says T minus 2 days and counting, asks how everything is. She says great, but she has to ask him something, a favor. She was hoping he’d do her the honor of giving her away. She knows they haven’t always agreed, but he and Mrs. Pryor are family…Jack interrupts her and tells her he’d be happy to, thanks for asking. They both smile and have a sweet little hug.
Tom asks if JJ was in love with Ahn, JJ says he and Beth just broke up, she didn’t want him back, so…JJ says she died in that blast and he told her father he’d do anything to help him. He needs $1,000 to come to the states with his granddaughter. JJ says he has to help him, for Ahn. Tom says maybe Jack will give him the money for the house and he can take what’s left and give it to her father.
JJ and Meg at church, they both meet Fr. Alejandro, who tells JJ his mother was so relieved when he came home, Meg says we all were. Fr. A says JJ should speak at one of their meetings. JJ asks meetings? Fr. says Catholic Peace Union, that’s how he met Helen. Fr. has to go and leaves. JJ asks if Meg knew about this. She says no, and tries to defend Helen, but he’s upset and tells her not to.
Family at dinner, JJ asks Beth if she can watch Johnny tomorrow night because he has to play pool with Tom. Meg says we’re having a bachelorette party for Beth, and Helen says she’ll watch him.
JJ and Helen going over seating chart, JJ’s upset. Helen asks him if something is wrong. JJ says don’t you think I should know if my own mother’s going to meetings with anti-war protesters? He asks if Jack knows, she says no, doesn’t think he’d understand. JJ says he doesn’t either. He asks if this has anything to do with the phone call, if that guy was running from the draft or a deserter. She doesn’t answer.
He says he doesn’t believe it, he’s over there fighting a war, and instead of my family being behind me…she says it was because of him…when that boy talked to me, told me what happened to him, what he saw – JJ says he saw it, too, she says I know you did Jack. Fr. A and his group care about the war and they care about what it’s doing…JJ says the only people who know about the war are the guys fighting it, not you or Fr. A or guys running away to Canada. He leaves the table.
Beth and JJ in the attic, he’s feeding Johnny and she says she can’t wait for them to have their own house, sleep in the same bed every night. JJ says yeah. Beth says if it’s too expensive then we don’t have to buy the house. JJ says you love it right? Beth says she thinks they’d be so happy there, but if it’s too much…JJ says no, it’s not too much money for a California pass-whatever…she says pass through, tells him to go ahead and tease, but when you walk in and see right through to our little plastic pool, where your wife waits for you in a bikini with a beer…
JJ meets Jack for coffee, guesses that the groom has jitters and it’s natural…JJ says it’s about this house Beth wants, she really loves it…Jack asks what JJ thinks? JJ says good, it’s close by, yeah good. JJ says the down payment is more than he thought, that Beth has expensive taste. Jack reminds him about his offer to help, JJ says good, he’ll pay him back. Jack says nobody said it’d be easy marrying a rich girl, but a house is the right investment. Jack says $2,000 will be in his account tomorrow. JJ says 2? Jack says that’s not enough, that’s some house…JJ says no, that’s enough, he hates asking him for money. Jack says good because 2,000 is about all he can clear up. JJ says 2’s good, it will make it a lot easier.
JJ and Tom at bar, JJ tells him about the money. Tom says you’re still short $2,000, and you sent the money to Vietnam. JJ says he had to do it and it’s done, so he needs $3,000. Tom says you’ll have to tell Beth you can’t get the house. JJ says she has her heart set on this one. Tom says remind him not to ever marry a girl who grew up with money. Tom guesses he can’t tell his dad or Beth about Ahn’s dad, JJ says yeah. Tom says he may have an idea.
Tom tells JJ about a fixed basketball game, JJ’s reluctant but Tom says you put down 3,000 you get back 3,000, you don’t have to tell Beth or your dad. Says the game is tomorrow, JJ says my wedding day. Tom tells him to think about it.
Beth’s friends want to know about the honeymoon, Beth says there isn’t one, but they might go to New York. Friends say come out to California with them and see the Beatles. Meg asks what they’re doing out there, one friend says working on the election against Ronald Reagan the actor. Beth says she has to check JJ’s schedule and then there’s the baby. Meg smiles, Beth says drinks! Meg tells Beth her friends are so nice, and Beth spots Chris on the other side of the bar and points him out to Meg.
JJ in the attic playing with Johnny, saying when he was in Vietnam, he had no idea what he’d be like, but he’s even better than he thought. He says they’ll do all sorts of fun things together. Helen comes in and says think about the way you feel about that baby at this very moment, what if he was fighting in the war? What if you didn’t know if he was ever coming home? She says that was how she felt every second when he was gone, and she doesn’t want another mother to feel that way. JJ asks what if he was a coward like that guy she helped. She says I’m a mother, Paul’s mother doesn’t care what he is, she just wants him safe…that’s part of being a parent, no matter what your child is or does…JJ cuts her off and says she’s wrong, she just is.
In other happenings, Patty seems to have a connection with Beth's cousin Steve. Chris tries getting through to Meg, but she tells them they're over (that's why he showed up at the bachelorette part). Oh, and Rox has agreed to do all the girls hair for the wedding for free, adding that she's been wanting to change Helen's hair for a long time.
