ohno: ohno: :mumble: :mumble: :censored: :grr:

Compared to what we have to choose from in today's music, i.e. American Idol winners, I would say the music world should be glad The Beatles ever existed.

Do you think someone like a Britney Spears or an Ashlee Simpson could write like Lennon/McCartney, or come up with the idea of a concept album, or to use an orchestra in rock music? I think not. Music today, with the exception of a few talented people left in the industry is a vast wasteland and it is getting worse.

Okay let's look at it this way, how many people 40 years from now will be singing "Toxic" or "Soldier". Will any of the songs from this generation be the most recorded or remembered songs? Will any of the people from AI have a music cataloge as big as the Beatles?

Sorry if I sounded like I was arguing, just expressing my thoughts.

I agree. I'm not a big Beatles fan, but their music was such a tremendous influence on the music scene, and they will always be remembered.

OMG, I'm loving these "Let's-compare-the-classic-bands-that-revolutionized-rock & roll-to-today's-crop-of-talent-to-prove-how-sucky-the-60's-were" posts. ohno: First Hendrix, now the Beatles. Oh boy, how they must have sucked.

To be fair, some music critics have said that if the Beatles were to start today, they would probably be lucky to open up for a band that's popular today such as, say, Modest Mouse or some jangly guitar pop band.

BUT--consider how and why the Beatles got popular in the first place. In all honesty, America's first taste of the Beatles was met with a big snore in 1963
when they were passed on by teen tastemakers who had heard one of their singles on American Bandstand, even though they had taken Britain by complete storm. But by the end of that year, after Kennedy's assassination,
America was plunged into mourning--and that was Brian Epstein's big chance.
He got radio stations on the East Coast to pump up the band's music on the air with a major promotional campaign--and The Beatles caught on. BIG TIME. People were getting into those catchy melodies, those guitars, the harmonies, the cute looks--and check out those moptop haircuts!! And the band was booked to play on the Ed Sullivan show--which became the most-watched television event by teens of that time. LITERALLY OVERNIGHT the band became the biggest thing in the world--and the rest was history.

One also has to look at the historical context of the Beatles' ascension to world domination. In 1959, a tragedy for all intents and purposes killed off rock and roll, when one of its biggest stars, Buddy Holly, died in a plane crash
in a snowy field along with Richie Valens and The Big Bopper. This horrific event topped other unfortunate occurences such as Elvis's induction into the army, Jerry Lee Lewis' fall from grace over having married his 13-year-old cousin, Chuck Berry being in jail over the crime of transporting a minor over state lines for illegal purposes, Little Richard believing that rock and roll was "evil" and retreating to Bible school, among others. In 1960, Eddy Cochrane would die in a car crash in England. There wasn't much in the way of rock and roll left, but we were certainly blessed to have all the teen pop crooners like Pat Boone. And in the early 60's there were all the dance crazes
such as the Twist, "Do the Loco-motion", and of course the Doo Wop girl groups!! And let's not forget BOBBY VINTON!!

When the Beatles took over the music scene in America in 1964 and started the British Invasion, rock and roll was reborn!!

Well, it was cool when Kylie Minogue "Did the Loco-Motion". I would have done it with her in a second. :D

They are much better than many bands of today. However, I think other bands from the 60's were just as good but get much less credit.

I just don't think you could ever call the Beatles overrated. They were the best and set the standard. Besides being a great "pop" band, they were revolutionary in using different types of sounds in their songs. They were never afraid to experiment. Thank God for the Beatles!

Dr. Frasier Crane I couldn't have said it better!

The thing for me, is everyone is still, after 40-plus years after they came to the U.S., is trying to find the next Beatles. Wasn't Oasis supposed to be the next Beatles? Also when Duran Duran hit the scene in the 80's they were also called the next Beatles.

I just don't get it about being "overrated". If the Beatles of all bands are overrated, then who is anyone else? The one great thing about the Beatles is that their stuff remains as original and ahead of its time 40 years after it came out. That's the power of them. If a band that has stood the test of time can be considered "overrated", then just about anyone can. Maybe all of rock and roll is just a series of "flavors of the month" who are here today and gone tomorrow. Any band that inspires that made it big back then could be "overrated", like Led Zeppelin or the Stones. Do people really think that Britney and Limp Bizkit are the "wave of the future"?
