Somebody informed me that TV Land showed at least one episode of "Gloria." I thought for sure a Gloria series would take off, but the show was canned after one season. Can anybody vouch for it. Reviews please! :)

I still don't know why the show was canned because it finished #18 after the 1982-83 season

It was probably canned because Sally Struthers is ANNOYING.
She was definately the weak link in the AITF cast.

I've been around.... but I'm back now.

Not only was Gloria dry, her voice was annoying (moreso than Edith's).... and her whining got on my nerves. I liked the character of Stephanie over Gloria.

Gloria didn't really annoy me, but that scream/crying she did when Archie made her upset did. Man, you had to turn down the volume. "MAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! MIIIIIIICCCCCHHHHAAAAEEEELLLLL!!!! WAHHHHH!!

Gloria was an ok series. They did tone down her character for the show. The best episode was when she confronted Michael Stivic on why he left her. Rob Reiner was not in the episode. From what I remember, the showed just the back of his head.

I saw some of "Gloria" when it first aired, and I have to say: "why, why, why?"

"Gloria" revealed that the love between her and Michael during "All In the Family" was a sham - a waste of time, Michael split on her, Archie was right about him all along, and who wants to hear that?!

Plus, at every chance Gloria got, she made fun of her father, and taught her son Joey to be disrespectful to his grandfather.

Disgraceful.

I',m just suprised that CBS never considered moving the show to a new time slot after it finished #18.

I never saw that one. That sounds pretty weak. If they couldn't have gotten Rob Reiner, they shouldn't have had an episode with "Mike" in it.

From what I understand, CBS felt Archie Bunker was tired and wanted to get rid of it. They saw Gloria as being tied to that character and that era and dispensed with her as well.

Shows that were lower-rated than either Archie Bunker's Place and Gloria were renewed for the 1983-84 season, so that theory has some validity.

WELL at first there was the 2 parter where GLORIA Came home after Mike left her (WHICH I HATED, b/c Mike would NEVER have left Gloria and joey, THEY WERE HIS LIFE, and I hate when they have a character do something totally against character just to change direction)

They filmed a pilot called THE FIRST DAY where Archie Helps Gloria Move and get her new job and meet Burgess Meredith and all.....

BUT Carol O Connor did NOT want that one shown on tv, b/c he decided it would be better for the show GLORIA to make it on its own, SOOOO they reshot the pilot , pretty much same plot WITHOUT ARCHIEs presence

THE RESHOT version aired as GLORIAs 1st ep

HOWEVER, the unaired pilot LATER was shown in Syndication as PART of ARCHIE BUNKERS PLACE

I have the unaired pilot for trade if anyone wants it

ITS ODD TO WATCH, b/c it has the Archie Bunkers Place theme and credits BUT It has STARRING SALLY STRUTHERS and the other names from GLORIA listed in the credits

Gloria was bad, b/c I hated how they had Mike do that to her.... it was wrong. I would have rather have Mike been killed or something

PLUS Gloria, was totally out of character too! When did she suddenly mature? it made no sense

And yet The Jeffersons went on for two more seasons.Maybe they weren't tied to Archie Bunker the same way Gloria was.Or perhaps The Jeffersons was higher rated.

I'm guessing the chances are slim for a DVD release of "Gloria". I wonder if they would eventually do it for AITF completists. The upside is it would be a "Complete Series" release since there was only 1 season.

They should release it since they are releasing ABP which started Gloria.

I saw an interview with Carroll O'Connor from the late 1990s. He talked highly of Jean Stapleton & Rob Reiner, but acted as if he refrained from talking about Sally Struthers.

According to O'Connor, halfway through the production of Gloria, Lear insisted that O'Connor hire his brother-in-law to produce "Gloria" as well as fire the shows writers and hire the ones that Lear wanted. It lead to another O'Connor-Lear battle and the series was canceled, perhaps not so much do to ratings but behind-the-scenes drama.

Thanks for clearing that up because I was always confused why Gloria was cancelled and it finished in the Top 20 after it's First Season

I think there were also behind-the-scenes network politics, because both shows technically should have been renewed, because lower-rated series like The Dukes Of Hazzard were.

I think CBS saw Archie as tired and wanted to get rid of him and by association, Gloria too. There's no reason why both shows shouldn't have returned for the 1983-84 season. Networks work in very strange ways.

at the time I was so disgusted with the network

YES Archie Bunkers Place had gotten tired and routine, BUT after all that the show had given to the network, they OWED IT TO THE SHOW to give it a final season and a great finale episode---- i always hoped there would be a finale episode where Mike would come back to New York and ask Gloria to take him back.... and since Mike had no job, they would all move back into Archies house and be a family again.....

but, nope, they just got canned without warning

Danielle Brisbois complained about that later on. I agree, they should have let them film a final episode or movie finale and end it properly, like they did M*A*S*H.

Watching that show was not very fun to watch. Sally Struthers' Gloria was at her best when her and Carroll O' Connor had those tender scenes together on All In the Family. They acted as though they were truly father and daughter. One scene stood out when Gloria sat on Archie's lap when Mike ran out on her when she found out she was pregnant in Season 6. I was in tears on that episode. Archie showed a soft side to him when it came to his "little goil"

In this Spring 82 interview Danielle Brisebois talked about joining Gloria if ABP ended. Then potentially a Stephanie spin off series down the road.

I'm assuming the Gloria door was closed when CoC disowned the series and it didn't matter anyway as both were cancelled within 11 months.

Not sure how Gloria and Meathead could have returned to 704 Hauser since Stephanie and Billie were now using their old bedroom.

Unlikely since Stephanie would have been only 15. That would have had to wait a couple seasons.

The only thing they could have done is have Meathead, Gloria and Joey move back into Jeffersons house since in finest Archie's Place tradition, Ed and Polly Swanson had gone MIA the last couple seasons.
