What's with people saying spongebob is gay? Particularly these Christian people who say he's a bad influence. Honestly. NOW we know who has the dirty minds. Thinking about sexuality on children's programing. ohno:

Yea, i heard of that. And speaking as a Christian, it's absolutley ridiculous. If you want it bad enough, you'll find evil in everything. Some people just loose sight of what being a Christian really is. This is about as bad as that one preacher who claimed Tinky Winky was gay.

He's square, he lives in a pineapple under the sea, his best friend's a starfish. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Stephen Hillenburg, the 43-year-old creator of Nickelodeon's hit cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants, is setting the record straight regarding the sexuality of his highly absorbent 'toon, days after conservative Christian activists accused SpongeBob of advocating a homosexual agenda by appearing in a video holding hands with pal Patrick the Star Fish.

a d v e r t i s e m e n t

SpongeBob, says Hillenburg, is not gay. He's just an animated crustacean.

"[Sexuality] doesn't have anything to do with what we're trying to do," Hillenberg told Reuters on Friday from Singapore, where he's attending the Asian premiere of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. "We never intended them to be gay. I consider them to be almost asexual. We're just trying to be funny, and this has got nothing to do with the show."

Hillenberg says that politics have never factored into the show and that the titular sea sponge's sole goal in his porous life is simply to be fun and entertaining--despite the show and its merchandise's obvious popularity among gays.

The SpongeBob brain trust came to the 'toon's defense after a full-blown controversy erupted this week when James Dobson, a Christian radio evangelist and founder of the group Focus on the Family, issued a warning to parents claiming the naïve yellow critter advocated a "pro-homosexual video."

Dobson and his minions believe a music video made by the nonprofit We Are Family Foundation to promote the ideas of tolerance and diversity is really just a cover promoting the gay lifestyle. The video is being distributed to 61,000 U.S. elementary schools and features more than 100 cartoon characters, including SpongeBob, Barney and Big Bird.

"Their inclusion of the reference to 'sexual identity' within their 'tolerance pledge' is not only unnecessary, but it crosses a moral line," Dobson said.

The brouhaha over SpongeBob and his Bikini Bottom mates' sexuality is absurd in Hillenberg's opinion.

"I really don't pay much attention to this," the creator, a former marine biologist and father of a six-year-old boy, told Reuters.

Hillenberg said that SpongeBob is just the latest in a long line of kiddie characters to be "outed" by right-wing zealots, a list that includes Scooby-Doo's Velma, Peanuts' Peppermint Patty, Sesame Street's Bert & Ernie and Teletubbies star Tinky Winky, who was targeted by evangelicals in 1999 for supposedly symbolizing gay pride because he's purple, has a triangle on his head and carries a purse.

After being much mocked in the media for his outbust, Dobson "clarified" his remarks, saying he was attacking the group behind the video, not SpongeBob.

The religious leader's crusade might also be the result of a mix-up, since the We Are Family Foundation responsible for the video happens to have the same name as an unaffliliated pro-gay and lesbian group.

Meanwhile, coming to SpongeBob's defense was the 1.3 million-member Cleveland-based United Church of Christ.

"The UCC extends an unequivocal welcome to SpongeBob," said general minister and president, the Reverend John H. Thomas, adding that the church has no problem with Barney, Big Bird, Tinky Winky or Clifford the Big Red Dog, either.

"Jesus didn't turn people away. Neither do we."

Thomas also called out Dobson.

"While Dobson's silly accusation makes headlines, it's also one more concrete example of how religion is misused over and over to promote intolerance over inclusion," Thomas said.

Controversy or not, SpongeBob is sticking around for awhile. His first movie continues to invade overseas markets, and Nickelodeon has ordered 20 additional episodes for the small screen.

the only people who are sinning are the ones discriminating others with different preferences. they should shut the **** up. even if they were intended to be gay, it's only THEIR belief that it's wrong. spongebob was not meant to be specially designed for christians.

It pisses me off how some Christians (some, not all) take everything and try to find flaws in it that contradict with their religion. it's so annoying and if anything those people are the ones with the problem. my father thinks that both Spongebob and yu-gi-oh cards go against his religion. As far as I know, Spongebob wasn't created so it could be picked apart by hypocritical Christians (or any religious person for that matter).

i just found this article and thought id post it

It was mayhem at the South Shore Plaza the other night when more than 2,000 Krabby SpongeBob SquarePants fans were turned away after waiting hours to have their picture snapped with the Krusty Krab's head frycook.

``Mothers were fighting, kids were crying and the police had to escort SpongeBob out,'' said Caroline Casey of Walpole, who was shopping at the Braintree mall when the SpongeBob incident reached its saturation point. ``It was like he was Elvis.''

Ha! If Squidward could see old SpongeBob now!

The costumed SpongeBob character - whose cartoon counterpart and his pals, Patrick, Gary and Mr. Krabs, are the No. 1 ratings draw on Nickelodeon - was slated to appear for three hours in the mall's center court early Wednesday evening. But by the time Bikini Bottom's most famous resident surfaced, the line stretched from Filene's all the way to Macy's.

``There were about 2,500 kids and parents,'' said Someone Who Knows. ``They did 100 photos per hour - which is a lot - but that's only 300 kids. You do the math.''

Well, by our count, that leaves some 2,200 Krabby customers when it came time for SpongeBob to return to his Pineapple Under The Sea. And while the kids in line were still crying ``I'm ready!'' SpongeBob had left the building.

``SpongeBob may be square but he sure was hip last night,'' said South Shore Plaza marketing director Linnea Kelliher.

So hip that mall security and a Braintree police detail officer had to help him escape the angry mob.

``Mothers were yelling, calling each other names and accusing each other of cutting the line,'' Casey said. ``Kids were crying, yelling `SpongeBob!' It was unreal.''

 that happened at a mall near where i live

I, myself, hate Spongebob. And I'm a christian. But I don't think Spongebobs gay. I think this whole thing started because the creaters are gay. Isn't it like, those two guys?

Even though this stupid rumor isn't true, people can believe what they want to believe. People can watch what they wanna watch. And they can tell their kids what to and what not to watch. So lay off some of these people, they just think what they're doing is right.

Cartman: Look, it's working! [one by one, the immigrants vanish from view]
Singer: The future begins with you and me.
Darryl Weathers: The immigrants are fadin' away!
Stan: We're doing it!
Singer: Take the first step and you will see the future-
Stan: Dude, wait wait ho, hold on. Wait a second. [drops his shovel] This is gay.
Kyle: [drops his shovel] This is really gay.
Cartman: Yeah, this is even gayer than all the men getting in a big pile and having sex with each other.
Stan: Okay, sorry, my bad, e-everyone back in the pile. [everyone races back to the pile.]
Darryl Weathers: Back in the pile everyone!

I agree, South Park and Family Guy are the greatest. The best animated shows ever..in my opinion. And I really just can't help it:

Rob Schneieder der derp dee derp! Der derp dee derpy derpy derp! Until one day... Der derp derpiddy derpy derp! Der derp de derp! Ta teetley tum! From the creators of "DER" and "Tum Ta Teetly Tum Ta Do", Rob Schnieder is "Der Derp Tum Teetly Tum der derpy dumb!" Rated PG-13

That sucks. If your parents don't let you watch it try getting them to watch it with you. My parents love the show and watch it all the time.

yeah it is but anyway, my mom is really strict. if you think not watching South Park and Family Guy is bad, if I get anything lower than an A- on my report card next term (even a B+), then no computer or phone priviledges for a long time.

 That's awesome. It's cool that people of all ages love the show.

BTW- What does your wristband look like? I got one for christmas too, it was black and has Cartman on it, and with much analyzing i've figured out that he's saying "screw you guys in going home"

Yeah, my mom watches it with me a lot, too. She doesn't care. My dad occasionally says something about how I shouldn't be watching it, but he's not really that serious. Whatever, I think there's a lot of smarts behind that show. Every episode proves a point, even if it is in a way that most people can't understand...

I believe it is right of them to close those stores. Homosexuality is a sin
against god and a sponge holding hands with a starfish of the same sex is
only going to teach children how to be gay.

How can they be gay!?! Does Spongebob even have a penis!?!!!!!!! I've never noticed one. I've never seen anything bulging out of his square pants....(shuts up now) I guess some christians don't have anything better to do then talk about gay sponges...They should put all that energy into helping people instead of accusing sbsp of being gay.

You're not looking in the right place. A sponge's penis is in a totally different place. ;)

 like he even has hormones/chromosomal patterns. they just make it apparent he has a face, limbs and vocal cords. starfish are live reproducing organisms, but who knows about the sponge, he could be a female.

no, i think that because SpongeBob the asexual seasponge and his "lifepartner" Patrick the asexual starfish are BOTH the same sex - that being asexual, or NONE - then by definition (well SOMEONE's definition anyways) they are gay. Plus they are both snappy dressers.

As opposed to spongebob, Chris is not amused. People are morons. Gay men are morons too, essentially all people are morons, everyone just needs to shut the hell up and worry about their own lives. Jesus.

by any chance does your cousin like showtunes? because if he does, I'm sorry but that clinches it, he MUST be gay.

You may also want to look through his music collection to see if he has any Cher, Madonna or Barbara Streisand stuff in there. :)
