I work in our downtown area, and there are panhandlers all over the place. Some of them need money and most of them don't. I don't give any money to any of them. Chances are, they make more money than the average worker. This one dude I used to see had a cast on his foot and a can in one hand begging for change. He got on the city bus, and took the cast off. This other dude asked me for some money so he can get a cheeseburger with it. I told him I can't give him the money, but I'll buy him a cheeseburger. He told me that was okay. See? I surprised him with that response. Don't give!

Ugh! After high school I moved to Milwaukee for awhile, and I couldn't believe how many times someone asked me for money! I couldn't walk down the street without someone asking me.
...So I finally said, "Damn, Mom! Get a job!" ;)
That last sentence is a joke, but the other stuff is for real! Some guy even asked me for money in the bathroom of the Grand Ave. Mall. I thought, damn, I can't even go into the can in the mall without some panhandler asking me for money! One reason I hated Milwaukee.

My mom has to deal with those kind of people all the time. She never gives out money, besides chances are they'll use it for booze.

I don't give handouts. Usually, I just say no and walk away.

Some guy asked me for money in the post office parking lot. I lied and said I didn't have any. Which is usually true anyway.

There's a lot of homeless guys on the street corners in the busier parts of Austin. It's like they freaking work in shifts. As soon as one leaves, another one is there.

I feel bad for anyone who needs money.

That includes myself.

Eh, I'm not going to let some greedy *******s ruin it for the ones who really DO need it. That is why I'm going to become rich and throw money on the streets for all to share and enjoy. Maybe the greedy ones can use it to go and buy and heart.

That was very good! Turn the tables on them! You know that the money would have gone for something other than food. ;) I would gladly take somebody and buy them a meal. At least you know what your money bought! :D

Yes there really are a lot of needy people out there! It's too bad that some have spoiled things for others who are really in need! But how do we tell the difference? The world is too dangerous to take the time to help your fellow man anymore. It's too bad! :(

That is true.Rich man can pull a dirty trick as well.
I sometimes feel sorry for the bums we pass whenever we go to big cities
but my mom says that some of them want the money other uses.
The sign in the hands may read '' Will work food.'' but sometimes means
for something else like drugs and alcohol.Panhandling is so bad. :(

if i have a few extra dollars i give it to them, i don't care what they do with the money. if it makes them happy for a few minutes, so be it.

Theres no need for anyone to beg for money or become homeless. The welfare system in this country will help anyone down on their luck.

I've lived in Milwaukee my whole life and not ONCE have i been panhandled. I must be lucky. Then again, I live in the suburbs and don't go to the downtown area very often. Try living/going to Chicago. There's TONS of panhandlers there!

We have that too. One of the interstate off ramps always has a guy standing there with a sign. Poor guy that gets the 6pm shift.

Yeah, I lived downtown. Right across from the Bob's Big Boy on Van Buren and ...something.
Of course, maybe things have changed since then. That was a long time ago.
Or maybe you are just lucky! :)

I see a black guy & a white guy standing on the off ramp on the highway all the time holding up signs saying can you spare some money for the homeless. The black guy i gave a hamburger from Wendy's one time. I don't feel sorry for homeless people because they should've gotten a education when they were younger so they wouldn't be homeless.

Yeah, I can tell it was a long time ago because all the "Big Boy" restaurants have been out of business here for like 10 years. I remember eating at those when I was little and then suddenly they just all dissapeared.

You're right for not giving money to homeless folks on the street. There are a few that are actually hungry and DO need help, there are A LOT that simply want another hit of crack or another bottle of wine. I was one of them. I had a huge heroin habit. I also had an expensive car, a nice apartment and other expensive tastes. All by panhandling. I traveled to Atlantic City and gambled and played the stock market. All from panhandling. I eventually lost everything and my conscience nearly ate me alive. Am I still bothered by it? To be honest, no. I never aggressively sought people out. I stood there with my cup and I made hundreds of dollars a day. What I'm trying to say is that these people you see begging for food aren't always what they seem. They're just hustlers who've found another way to get over on people. I'm actually quite a different person now.

I wouldn't just say the lack of education. For some, maybe. A lot of them choose to be out there. I had conversations with some educated pan handlers, and a lot of them just didn't have the motivation or the drive.

Not without a home address. Most employers (even McDonalds) require you have an address. The corner of 5th and Maple doesn't cut it.

I gave $6.00 to a beggar, .50 cents to a beggar, a dollar to a beggar, a dollar to a beggar, a dollar to a beggar. I gave the beggar six dollars because I did something stupid. He asked me for 4.00, then I had the idiotcy(is this a word) to open up my bookbag in front of him to give him the 4.00. What a dummy! He could have taken my bookbag and run with it or snatched all the money!(I had quite a few bills). Instead he asked me for 6.00 when he saw the money. So I gave it to him. When I regretted that, I said to myself, "Don't you sometimes buy yourself over $5.00 meals and then get yourself a 1.00 ice cream bar?" So, the 6.00 should be no problem.

or without having good hygiene. do you really think anyone's going to hire someone who's been wearing the same clothes and hasn't been able to shower in weeks?

I usually feel bad for them and give them something......

The last $$$$$ I gave someone was at whole foods... I gave them $20

People dont realise how hard it is to be homeless..... We are not all on the same page...... Sometimes its nice to help someone who isnt as lucky as us....
