View Full Version : Thomas Haden Church nominated for Academy Award
dlemond 01-25-2005, 11:57 AM Congratulations to Thomas Haden Church for his first Academy Award Nomination for "Sideways"
Can't wait to see this movie, and I hope Thomas wins.
His biggest competition in my eyes is Clive Owen.
(Jamie Foxx will win for "Ray")
phoebe7165 01-25-2005, 12:07 PM I'm surprised AngeFaitore didn't beat you to it posting this!!
Well, I can't describe how happy I am to hear about THC's nomination although it really was no surprise to me.
Yeah, I think Clive Owen is his biggest competition only because Clive beat him for the Golden Globe, but you never know!! We'll all be rooting for Thomas!

I was busy posting it over at IMDB and my own fansite.
Plus, there hasn't been any traffic here lately, so I didn't bother.
spunkygirl 01-25-2005, 01:25 PM Congrats to Thomas. I hear he's a shoe in to win this one, he's got some great competiton, but I think he's got the odds in his favor
Yay Thomas :woohoo:
AngeFaitore 01-25-2005, 09:40 PM Now Thomas has a title in the Hollywood Kingdom.
Everytime he's announced in a film trailer or TV Movie commercial, he'll be referred to as Academy Award Nominee Thomas Haden Church (Now he has to shorten his name because the title is too long! If he gets knighted some day, he'll be Academy Award Nominee Sir Thomas Haden Church! HOLY CRAP! ).

THC Knighted? I can see it now:
The Queen: "I hereby knight you Sir Thomas Haden Church".
Thomas: "Wow, AWESOME!"
By the way Ange, I KNOW why YOU weren't the first person to post the news about THC being nominated for an Academy Award...You were busy buying a new evening gown for Oscar night! ;)

Um, no. I was actually posting over at my website's message board. I've got a few fans over there who will go rabid if Thomas doesn't win.
AngeFaitore 01-26-2005, 08:56 AM Thomas' reaction to the nom:
Thomas Haden Church (supporting actor, Sideways) was at his ranch outside Austin, Texas.
Q: Where were you when you heard?
A: I got up probably about 6 and turned on the TV and watched. It was very exciting, a little tense, a little sweaty. People said, "This could change your life," but it's one of those things that, with all the critical acclaim the movie has received and critics and groups have been very accepting of my performance, and it could have been humiliating had it gone the other way. But I'm very honored and proud to be a part of it.
Q: What do you think of co-star Paul Giamatti being shut out for best actor?
A: I was very disheartened by that. It's just that all of those other performances are extraordinary as well. I just think a lot of pundits have been saying for months that the actor category is pretty stiff. Javier Bardem, Liam Neeson, there are some great performances that were, not overlooked, but didn't fit in. I was disheartened that Paul did not get a nomination. I'll give him a call in a little bit. I don't know if he'll answer the phone. But on other side, I am absolutely thrilled for Virginia (Madsen). She's remarkable and very happy she got recognized.
Q: What does nomination mean to you?
A: I guess it's an acknowledgement. I've worked in the business for 16 years. It's been well-documented that I kind of said goodbye to acting a few years ago and focused on other things, largely my life here in Texas. I had met Alexander (Payne) on a few of his other movies. I'd lived in Texas full-time for four years ago when I was sent the script. It was a bit of an anomaly given my life. I'm just thrilled with the results a year and a half later. It is an honor to be nominated.
Q: Are there any parallels to you and your Sideways character?
A: Alexander had conceived of these guys, the movie was adapted from a book. He was very clear with me, 'I'm not casting you because I think you're that guy. I don't know anything about your life other than that you were a successful television actor who also has done some movies and directing.' He was quite aggressive with that point. And the same thing with Paul. We're just actors. Paul certainly is not a sad sack failed writer eighth-grade English teacher.
