One of the more interesting running debates that has been going on at this board for some time is the issue of whether "Good Times" is actually a spinoff or not. Our pal Solomon keeps insisting that it isn't, yet he stubbornly and mysteriously refuses to produce any significant concrete evidence to support his claim. Well I cannot wait any longer. Before your eyes, I will now finally prove to all of you that "Good Times" is, in fact, an actual spinoff, and not a bad one at that.

First, we have to define what a spinoff really is. According to what I read in "The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows: 1946-Present" (a fairly reliable source, don't ya think?), a spinoff is when one or more characters from one series are given a series of their own. There are essentially two types of spinoffs. One type involves characters that were regulars in a previous series (ex. "Rhoda", "Lou Grant", "Frasier", "Joey").The other type features characters who made only one or two appearances in a previous series, but were so popular with the viewers that they were given their own series (ex. "Maude", "Laverne & Shirley", "Mork & Mindy"). "Good Times" is of the first type.

Fans of "All In The Family" will fondly remember the episode where Edith's cousin Maude came to visit. A year later, she had her own series, where she employed a black housekeeper named Florida Evans. Florida worked there for one season before she too got her own series, which was, in fact, "Good Times". Sounds like a typical spinoff to me. But don't just take my word for it. In the book I mentioned above, on page 477, in its summary of "Good Times", the evidence is there in the first sentence in plain English:

" 'Good Times' is a spinoff of "Maude", which in turn is a spinoff of 'All In The Family' ". In case the message didn't get through, near the end of the book, in Appendix 7, there is a list of every spinoff ever made which includes---you guessed it---"Good Times".

I don't want to argue, TVShow A, but how do you figure Good Times ain't no spinoff from Maude? Yeah, Maude took place in NYC, GT Chicago. John Amos played Henry in Maude and James Sr in GT. The fact of the matter is both shows were produced by Norman Lear, Eric Monte, Mike Evans and Norman Lear got together and created Good Times. They spun Esther Rolle's character off. It's credited as a spinoff in the Hollywood books and by Norman Lear standards. So Good Times is a spinoff of Maude. No more debating.

I know it is in question about the poor Evans moving from Harlem to the south side of Chicago. But Brian Damage just said it about Florida Evans, not NYC or Chicago. That's kinda simple actually. The spinoff pilot to Jackee Harry's show aired in some markets on NBC, while the character of Sandra Clark was still on 227. If the pilot was picked up, the show would have to write off the character. Thus, the new show aired, before the character left. The same could be said about the spinoff The Art of Being Nick.

Yes I am a fan of both shows but I also have come across several articles, books, and Tv programs that confirmed that GT was not a spinoff. It's just too many things supporting my argument. No one can win-LOL

A supporting character or characters in an existing series is given their own show in which they become the main focus. That wasn't a spin-off. That was a cross over show because the characters of Day By Day never appeared on FT and the crossover with Day By Day happened after that show had already been on for awhile.

I think I have a better explanation of this debate. I emailed a man by the name of Thomas Holbrook who is the webmaster of a very popular television spinoff and crossover site. I explained what was going on here and made sure to mention all of Solomon's points on the debate. I will foward his response here.

It is a spin off. Are there contradictions? You bet. A name change and a very odd location change did occur. And it is likely that the series was conceptualized before Maude was even on the air. None of this though means that Good Times isn't in fact a spin off.

First off the continuity problems of names and locations. So what? This is TV not nuclear physics. The rules of science are written in stone. The rules of TV reality are not. Changes can and do happen if it is believed those changes will help the show. Like I said, internal to continuing series this happens, let alone with spin offs. For example...

* Saved By The Bell's location moved from the midwest to the west coast.
* Happy Days, Family Matters and The Torkelson's all mysteriously had some of their family's kids disappear from reality without explanation.
* When John Hinkley shot President Regan, The Greatest American Hero's last name mysteriously changed from Hinkley to Hanley for about half a season.

The list goes on. Does this mean the beginning of the show isn't part of the same continuity as the end? No. It means its TV and things of that sort happen. And if such rejiggering is allowed internal to a series of course it can happen when spinning a character off. Good Times is better if its in Chicago? Okay. Chicago it is. And that is logically easier to explain away than a child disappearing from a family. Clearly between Florida leaving Maude and showing up on Good Times we missed some time where the location changed.

How's this for a changed premise. On Cheers Frasier Crane's dad was 1.) a scientist and 2.) DEAD. Does that mean because on Frasier his dad is alive and a former cop that Frasier ISN'T a spin off??? Now in that case they did later go back and explain the continuity problem away but until they did there was a discontinuity. And the fact that an explanation was possible bolsters my point about Good Times. Just because the location change wasn't explained doesn't mean there couldn't be an explanation. If they never had explained the gaffe on Frasier it would still be a spin off connected to Cheers.

Now as to "Good Times" being created before Maude. Yes, the creator had the idea. Wrote a pilot for it and everything. And there it sat. Then it gets used as a vehicle starring Esther Rolle who was then appearing on Maude. I think your friend's issue is with what constitutes a spin off. By his thinking a spin off would be where you have a character on one show and then using that character as a starting point craft a show around them. The character has to be the starting point. As opposed to Good Times where the premise for the show was already in place and then the character was added to it. Bottom line, all that is behind the scenes and irrelevant to a viewing audience. The bottom line of a spin off is a character or characters from one show leave and are made the lead character(s) of a new show. Florida Evans was a character on Maude. Her husband was a character on Maude. They then both became the central characters on Good Times. Mr. Evans did have a name change BUT he was played by the same actor. And its not like Esther Rolle was playing Florida Evans on Maude and this writer just happened to have a pilot script that just happened to have a a character in it also named Florida Evans. In the original script the character had an entirely different name. They then changed the name to Florida Evans. Why would they possibly do such a thing? By your friend's logic it would have to be simply a wacky and amazing coincidence. Well that's nonsense. They changed the name to establish continuity between the shows to help launch the show. A show about a family living in the projects back in the 70s would be a hard sell. But if you can launch it as a spin off from a hit show using a beloved character from that show as the main character, it gets alot easier to sell. The fact that the concept was born first and then reworked to fit a specific character is beside the point.

Hope that helps. I doubt it will though. Somebody feels they are right, they are going to fight to the bitter end. The truth is there is a bit of logic to your friend's arguement and if this was a math or science issue he might be right. But it isn't math or science. Its pop culture fiction. Whole different ball game. Simple logic and intent wins. Maude came first on air. Florida Evans was on that show. She left that show. Random, the angel in Out of the Blue, appeared in an episode of Happy Days and helped Fonzie get out of his deal with the Devil. The previous season, Robin Williams character of Mork was taken from an episode of Happy Days and made it on its own as a spinoff. The producers hoped to do the same with Random.

edit: I double checked and Random didn't appear on Happy Days until 9 days after the premiere of Out of the Blue. My guess is that it was an attempt to draw viewers to OotB. And it was Chachi's soul, not Fonzi's. /edit

I have never really called this a spin-off though because Mork appeared in more than one episode of HD. Nor does OotB get a mention in my TV bible (Total Television) as a spin off.

I own both Total Television and the Primetime Directory. TT is a far superior book. I have found very very few mistakes and it lists both daytime and nighttime programming on every network up to 1996.

Another good place to look would be the Season 1 DVD. Right in the back cover it clearly states that "Good Times" is a spinoff. I should mention that the DVD isn't one of those cheap 'public domain' models that you find for shows like "The Beverly Hillbillies" or "Petticoat Junction". This is the real deal, officially sanctioned by CBS and Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment and I'm sure that any mistakes that would have appeared would have been corrected and approved by them, otherwise the DVD would have been released a lot later. Here's what it actually says on the back:

Good Times, which ran on CBS-TV from 1974-1979, was a spin-off of the All In the Family spin-off Maude. The series details the trials and tribulations of Florida Evans (who previously had worked as Maude's maid) and her family on the south side of Chicago. Whatever that book was it was Wrong. The only spinoff of a spinoff of All in the Family was CHECKING IN. A spinoff based on Florence from the Jeffersons.

"Good Times" was a fine well written sitcom and I wish it was more these days. It was a spin off of "Maude". They kept the character of Florida but had to make a few changes to flesh out her world.
Also, simply claiming that anyone, or any refferenced book that says it is a spin off is "wrong" doesn't count as an intellagent response. Unless of course you are three years old.
There are some real interesting thoughts on the theory that it isn't a spin off and i am very interested in hearing them, so lets stick with the facts and try to sort this out.
I hope this show comes back to tv some time soon.

The name was obviously changed so they could have the son named J.J. - James, Jr. H.J. wouldn't have sounded so good.

The names and location was changed when Jake and the Fatman spun off of Matlock. Still a spinoff.

Airdates are irrelevant. An episode can be shown immediately after production is complete or it can be held over for weeks or months, or in some cases, years. An episode of The Simpsons, scheduled for 5/19/13 wasn't broadcast until 1/4/15. Another episode from the same season, produced between episodes broadcast in September and November 2013 was broadcast on 5/4/14 and promoted as the 550th episode broadcast when it was the 536th episode produced. An episode of Family Guy, produced in 2009, still has not been broadcast (although it has been released on DVD.)

What you need to look at is the production date although that information may be hard to find.

I believe Good Times is a spin-off of Maude indeed. Were there lots of discontinuity and inconsistencies, yes. But at the end of the day, Esther Rolle and John Amos played Florida Evans, Maude’s maid and Henry Evans, on Maude and those to characters got carried onto Good Times. They changed Henry’s name to James, gave them children, and relocated them from New York to Chicago. Does it make sense, not much. But Esther Rolle and John Amos appeared on not only Maude but also on it’s spinoff, Good Times, playing the same characters.

Think what you wanna think, but I say Henry Evans and James Evans Sr. are the same characters, they just changed Henry’s name to James when Florida and James got spinoff into their own show.

Good Times is 100% a spin off of Maude. People want to put up barriers or put in the classic spin off attributes which don't happen every time. Yes, Maude did not appear on Good Times. Here are the facts that it is indeed a spin off.

The writers and producers of the show called it a spin off. There is an interview with Jimmy Walker (on youtube) when he was asked to read the script of Good Times. He asked what it was and he was told "its a spin off of Maude." If the creators/writers of the show say its a spin off, how could you say other wise.

The Florida character became so popular on Maude that it was decided Florida would have her own show. When Good Times started her name was the same...Florida Evans. In one episode of Good Times, Florida does talk about her former job as a housekeeper.
