I barely remembner Carter Country being on during it's original run , and it was syndicated in the early-mid 80's in my viewing area, but I never watched it . Was this a good show? I heard Victor French had a bad falling out with Michael Landon and left Little House to do this comedy series. I've also heard there was a lot of southeren-based humor that may have alienated audiences.

I watched ONE episode that I received in a tape trade and I can't really judge the show on one episode. I can tell you that I wasn't entertained by that one episode. I think I need to see more to make a judgment on whether the show is funny or not.

Well The show did last two years so I guess it was a little funny. I think the show was a midseason replacement.

I hated the show because of the blantant racial slurs on the show by the the character of Jasper played by the late Harvey Vernon. Vernee Watson-Johnson was a hottie on the show. She was quite desirable to look at and it was worth watching.

I thought the whole point of Jasper's character was to play the racist??? That was part of the comedy. AND if I remember correctly, the black cop always made Jasper to look like a fool. If you are a politically correct nut, then you should never watch any sitcoms from the 70s as I am afraid you will be offended by Sanford & Son, Jeffersons, What's Happening, Good Times etal ;)

right you are, tom-the "racism" was more implied than actually stated and it all came from the mouth of a foolish character who had the least amount of respect on the force.
as for whether this show was funny? well, you gotta grade that on the sitcom curve.
how many sitcoms are actually "funny" in the sense that you find yourself laughing out loud?
and even so, how many sitcoms will make you laugh out loud more than once or twice, even in the case of a long run?
i find that most popular sitcoms are nice places to visit and tend to put smiles on the faces of their loyal viewers as opposed to squeezing chuckles out of 'em.
that's where "carter country" comes in.
lately i've been watching episodes (which i haven't seen in 15 years since the show originally ended!) and while i have laughed out loud (there again is another matter-how HARD is the laughter?) once or twice, i'd have to say this falls into the majority category of a series where it was fun to visit.

as someone mentioned on an earlier post, richard paul as the mayor is the big comic relief, and he's darn good.

just as important however is the ensemble work by Victor French, Kene Holliday, Guich Koock and the rest.
put all this together and i'd say you have a slightly better than average example of a perfectly average late 70s sitcom.

then you should never watch any sitcoms from the 70s as I am afraid you will be offended by Sanford & Son, Jeffersons, What's Happening, Good Times etal ;)
