While never actually given away in the series, LCPD is actually said to stand for Los Angeles County Police Department.

Oh. Okay, that makes sense.

Its also said to stand for the fictious city . . . .Lake City. So it would be the Lake City Police Department . . . LCPD. I always thought it was Los Angeles county but when you think of it it doesn't make sense since most of the shows took place in a metro area including Long Beach and Stacy's apartment was at the "Marina Apartments" so I'm assuming Marina Del Rey.

I have just found this : League City Police Department for LCPD.
But this is used in the Texas (www.lcpd.com)

But Los Angeles is not in the Texas.....insn't it ? lol

Come to think of it, what the hell DO the initials "LCPD" stand for? It was painfully obvious that "T.J. Hooker" was set (and filmed) in Los Angeles.

Emergency Services History buff & Old TV show enthusiast here,

So first off, some Counties in the US have a "County Police Department". This does not replace the Sheriff's Office/Department, but merely acts as the Police for the county whilst the Sheriff handles court & jail related things such as warrants or correctional duties at the County lockup.

Second off, at the time T.J. Hooker was filmed there were several law enforcement agencies that no longer exist in California. Among these agencies were the at the time, very real Los Angeles County Police Department, which supplemented the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department as another county-wide law enforcement agency seperate from the sheriff's Department. And, the California State Police, which held seperate jurisdiction and duties from the California Highway Patrol.

Eventually the LCPD would integrate into the LASD in the late 90s with officers being offered lateral transfers to either the sheriff's department or other area law enforcement agencies. With the bulk of equipment and facilities being either transferred over to the sheriff's department or sold off.

As for the California State Police, they would be integrated into the CHP sometime in the 1990s as well, transferring Equipment and facilities to the CHP or selling it off. Similar to the LCPD Troopers were offered lateral transfers to CHP or other area LEAs.

Retirees and Officers who would be or had previously retired from the now defunct agencies were allowed early retirement as well as retention of their existing retirement benefits to my knowledge.


In summary, while TJ Hooker was allegedly based off of either the fictional Lake City Police Department, or the "fictional" Los Angeles County Police, there was a time when the LCPD was a very real agency in the Los Angeles County area.
