Yeah but those people are immature ****wits who desperately need to grow up.Glasses aren't the end of the world.I felt the same way when i had to wear braces in highschool, but people didnt care about them as much as i did.Just remember that we are our own worst critics. My little brother was supposed to wear glasses when he was younger to correct a lazy eye,but because he didn't want to be a "geek" his eyes got worse, and he is now really cross eyed. His biggest regret is NOT wearing the glasses because now he has to get his eye surgically operated on-and as much as i love him,and dont want to say it,glasses would not have looked as bad as his lazy eye does.

I've been standing on the sidelines, watching this thread. I didn't want to have to reply, but I feel I must put in my 2¢ now.

Take it from somebody who has worn glasses for many years. I started wearing glasses at age 4, back in 1989. You know, that decade that is apparently considered "classic", "retro" now...whatever...it was more than 15 years ago that I started wearing them. Back then, it seemed that more parents picked out their kids' glasses frames for them. That doesn't seem to be the case now - but if your parents say they'll pick out glasses frames for you, tell them you want to choose your own frames. YOU should be the one to choose something that YOU will be wearing for anywhere from 2 to 4 years. Once you pick something out and tell the people which one to order, that's it. You're stuck with them until you outgrow them (and it will happen, you'll probably go through 2 or 3 glasses frames before you graduate from high school, since you are in 7th grade now - am I right?).

Glasses aren't supposed to be evil - their purpose is to help you see better. You don't want your eyes to get worse, do you? Then you seriously need to rethink wearing glasses. Anybody that makes fun of your glasses don't know what they're talking about.

Glasses today are a LOT better than they were in the 50's/60's/70's (Marlene could vouch for me, since she grew up in those decades). Back then, the lens for glasses were made with REAL glass and they would always be sliding down peoples' noses and if they weren't careful, they could fall and break. They don't make glasses with real glass anymore - they use a different material that is like glass. The 2000's is a wonderful time to be growing up wearing glasses because now they make lenses that are scratch-resistant and non-glare. They both cost a little extra, but they are REALLY worth it in the long run. I have had my current frames since late 2002 and I have yet to get a scratch on my glasses lens and I have noticed less glare.

You really shouldn't have anything to worry about - glasses-wearers are pretty common those days, and nobody will make fun of you for glasses. They would, if you were in grade school. I strongly doubt anybody in junior high would make fun of you for wearing glasses, since you guys are older and more mature at this point. Like I mentioned earlier, I have worn glasses since 1989 and not once have I been made fun of for wearing glasses - because they are so common, that nobody gives it a second thought those days.

I bet the reason you can't get contacts is because your mom feels that you are too young to understand how to properly take care of contacts. You have to take REALLY good care of them DAILY -- before you can even begin to wear them, you must go through a cleaning/rinsing process and it would be advised to have a bottle of eyedrops on your person at all times - they dry out easily and the eyedrops would be for keeping them moisturized. THEN when you take them out, you have to clean/rinse them all over again and dump out the solution and put in clean solution so there is no icky bacteria on them. Also, there is always the risk of losing a contact or tearing them. I don't know too much about contacts beyond this - I had contacts for a brief period of time in 8th grade (early 1999) and I discovered that contacts were not for me. I do, however, know that there are disposable contacts. I don't know what the care procedure for disposables are - but you could check into that. If you feel that you ARE ready to handle the responsbilitiy of contacts, just ask your mom. Ask her if you can get disposables. If she still says no, don't argue with her - she knows what's best for you. If you don't get them now, you will be able to get them in high school.

With glasses, you only have to clean them off with a CLEAN washcloth (don't use the same one for repeat cleanings! Always throw the washcloth into the hamper once you are finished with it!) once a day or so, whereas more care is involved with wearing contacts.

At best, it sounds like you would only need glasses for reading - they don't make contacts for reading  - so that is not bad at all. You'll still be able to go glasses-free the rest of the time. Times have changed since Steph got her reading glasses on "Full House", so I really don't think you have anything to worry about. :D

With that, I am done - I didn't intend to make this a long-winded post. Hopefully, you have learned something from this post. :)

LOl Allison. Yes I can vouch that glasses weren't always cool! In fact I will admit that I prefer my contacts over glasses. I only wear my glasses in the evening. I always take my contacts out at night but I ALWAYS wear my contacts in the daytime. For one thing my glasses are bi-focals these days and I hate wearing them mainly for that reason. And yes, I think that I am more attractive without glasses!

And that I can't find any frames to compliment my stupid-shaped face.

I can see perfectly fine! It's just that it's a little blurry when I have my left eye closed/covered... like I'm really gonna read stuff with my left eye covered!

It's just gonna get worse though. Your left eye might be 20/20 enough now to compensate for the 20/30 or whatever vision your right eye is at, but soon enough it'll get to the point where the left eye can't keep up and you'll squint a lot and end up with wicked headaches.

That's how it was with me. The right eye was 20/20 and the left eye was 20/70. I could still see fine, but it would have gotten progressively worse had something not been done.

What I don't understand is all these people getting contacts so early. I got glasses when I was 10 and was told I was too young for them because my eyes were still growing.

You know, now that I think, I got glasses at 12, not contacts. I got those in 8th grade, so I was probably 14. I don't know if anyone told me I was too young though. I just couldn't touch my eyeballs. But I do think wearing glasses for awhile is better than jumping straight into contacts at the beginning of your vision correction journey.

Actually wearing glasses worsens your sight, which is why the presription changes each time you go to the eye doctor. It'll just stay the same if you don't, but still it's better to see than to see blurry, no matter how bad it is.

I've never heard that. I mean, logic says that if that were the case, everyone would go blind eventually. I think your eyes just get naturally worse or level off somewhere, glasses or not. Sometmes they might even get better. My dad wears glasses and last time he went to the eye doctor, his vision had actually improved.

It's all individual.
