Didn't we always wonder that growing up? It surely didn't seem far. Aunt Bee was always grocery shopping, and walking home. I'd say, maybe two blocks. What about you all?

View Full Version : How far was the courthouse and Andy's house? nerrad 01-04-2005, 03:10 PM Didn't we always wonder that growing up? It surely didn't seem far. Here is a link to an article about 'Forty Acres', a long gone studio back-lot where many movie and series exteriors were filmed, including TAGS. http://www.radoknews.com/andy-griffith-show.html Coffeecup 01-26-2005, 10:16 PM Very interesting article. miss landers 01-28-2005, 08:25 AM The distance between the Jailhouse and the Taylor home couldn't have been far because Opie (as a very little boy) walked it after school and was constantly dropping in. Aunt Bee dropped in now and then and a heavy woman like Aunt Bee couldn't have walked too far. Aunt Bee also carried things with her when she dropped in like grocery bags, baskets of food, etc. In one episode she brought a prisoner his dinner on a tray! That suggests to me that the Taylor home was just around the corner. But it couldn't have been because the jailhouse area looks like a downtown business area - not a residential area! The telling thing for me however is Aunt Bee ... she couldn't have been capable of walking more than a few short blocks in light of her age and her weight and she certainly couldn't have walked too far carrying grocery bags. nerrad 01-28-2005, 08:30 AM Good point. I used to think of that also. Aunt Bee sure liked walking for her age. ;) nerrad 01-28-2005, 08:33 AM Check out the link. From above, it looks like it might've been two blocks. Even though, we all knew that she didn't really walk it. :D miss landers 02-06-2005, 10:25 AM Check out the link. From above, it looks like it might've been two blocks. Even though, we all knew that she didn't really walk it. :D Yes, I did. And it looks like the Taylor house is very close (about 2 blocks) from the Sheriff's office. I'm not surprised. Aunt Bee certainly couldn't have walked too far. Interestingly, in the later eps she drove around Mayberry. A car enabled her to roam further from home and get into more trouble! Aunt Bee was always bringing lunch for Andy and Barney, and sometimes bringing breakfast for Otis. And Opie was constantly dropping in. And Opie was constantly dropping in. I always just placed it where it existed onthe Mayberry set, justa couple f blocks away, just past the church. Will Dockery 12-31-2021, 03:24 AM Good point. I used to think of that also. Aunt Bee sure liked walking for her age. ;) Oddly, watching the first episode of Season 7, Opie seems to run a short distance from his front yard to Goober's gas station, which usually seems quite a bit farther from downtown. What about you all? Watching the episode with the threatening produce salesmen on the edge of town yesterday, it seems odd how just past the Snack Bar Mayberry seems to suddenly go from city streets to dirt road and rural setting. Kind of jarring in a way. Will Dockery 08-26-2023, 10:23 PM This looks like a good thread for discussion of the forever missed 40 Acres Mayberry town set. Read an interesting article today about what happened to the Mayberry set. Apparently it was hit by an arsonist, ruined many of the landmark buildings including Andy's house, sad story. I'll look for the link again and post it here. Duster76 08-26-2023, 11:19 PM There was an episode early in the series, I think it was Runaway Kid, the final scene has Opie hopping around inside an umbrella stand shaped like an elephant's foot around the front of the house. There's a shot down the road and it seems the courthouse is at the end of the road to the left. SarahBellum 08-28-2023, 12:42 PM Yes, I think Andy's house is four houses down from the corner, across the street from the church. I assume the houses for Thelma Lou, Helen Crump, Mrs. Mendelbright and others were right there also. It's kind of funny in the episode Man in a Hurry, Andy, Aunt Bee and Opie are getting into the squad car to go home from church. They could have walked home. True, the back door of the church across the street from Andy's house. ThisLittlePiggy 08-31-2023, 12:06 PM Fred Walker said the courthouse was just across the street from the drugstore. Will Dockery 08-31-2023, 09:54 PM Fred Walker said the courthouse was just across the street from the drugstore. Yes, that odd shaped building across from the Courthouse. It's kind of funny in the episode Man in a Hurry, Andy, Aunt Bee and Opie are getting into the squad car to go home from church. They could have walked home. I read somewhere that the house used for Thelma Lou was a real house a couple of blocks away from Forty Acres. Today's color episode is set mostly at the filling station, which Goober has just bought from Wally, with a several shots of the road and the heavy growth of trees, behind which must the street the Taylor house is on, of course, no sign of that here, though. schmave 09-13-2023, 01:42 PM My guess as a kid was always two to three blocks. Will Dockery 09-14-2023, 12:29 PM My guess as a kid was always two to three blocks. In the real world that's right. In the episode where Opie is harassed by the bully and Barney follows him, the entire walk from the Taylor house to the corner in front of the church is shown closely. That would be a block, and the Courthouse is another short black away from there. |
