LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - NBC will proceed with plans to introduce the new series "Law & Order: Trial by Jury" despite the death of one of its stars, Jerry Orbach.

The 69-year-old veteran of stage, TV and film died Tuesday at New York's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center where he was being treated for prostate cancer.

A spokeswoman for the show confirmed that episodes already taped with Orbach will air in the upcoming midseason and issued a statement Wednesday.
"The producers are deeply saddened," the statement said. "While Jerry is irreplaceable, 'Law & Order: Trial by Jury' is an ensemble and will continue in production. A new member will join the company. Announcements will be forthcoming."

Six episodes of "Jury" have been taped, according to the spokeswoman, with Orbach having appeared in as many as half of them. His character, Detective Lennie Briscoe, will be replaced by a new character, but NBC declined comment on what actor might be tapped for the role or how he will be written off the show.

Orbach agreed earlier this year to transfer from the original "Law & Order," where he spent 12 seasons, to "Jury" in a reduced role in order to accommodate the actor. After more than a decade of carrying a heavy workload on "Order," "Jury" required only two days a week.

Briscoe's departure was explained on "Order" as a retirement from active duty on the police force; the character was written to join "Jury" as an investigator for the district attorney's office. Dennis Farina replaced Orbach on "Order" this season.

NBC has not announced a premiere date for "Jury," though a spokeswoman indicated the new series could debut as early as March.

Cast alongside Orbach in "Jury" are Bebe Neuwirth, Amy Carlson and Kirk Acevedo. Joining Orbach in the switch from the original "Order" to the new character was Fred Thompson, who is reprising his role as Manhattan District Attorney Arthur Branch.

They've started promoting this on Australian TV as Coming Soon but they're promoting Candice Bergen as the star - am I to understand she will only be a semi-regular guest star.

Law and Order "Trial by Jury" will get two weeks of previews in "ER's" normal slot on March 17 and 24 -- opposite the NCAA basketball tournament on CBS -- before sliding into its regular home at 10 p.m. ET Friday, April 1. It's taking the place of "Medical Investigation," which will have ended its season by then.

Dennis Farina has been a good replacement so far for Jerry. I watched last night's new episode.

I just watched the show and I liked it. Bebe was great as a prosecuter and the case was very interesting. I liked how they showed all sides of the case. It was tough though watching Jerry Orbach. I could tell he wasn't well. Tomorrow is his last show.

I thought he looked pretty ill, but maybe it's just because I know he was.
Bebe was absolutely perfect. Orbach is just about the coolest guy around, and Candice Bergen made a great judge.

"Life's a bitch."

I agree, Orbach did look sick, but like you said, we already knew that he was, so that probably just magnified it.

I hate to say this but he looked like a mortician did his make-up! He didn't look natural. Anyway it was a interesting episode. I'm a little cool on the two women prosecuters. They seem a little soft. I guess I'm used to the tough female co-chair that Jack had on Law and Order.

On the second episode was interesting for a couple of reasons! With all the bullets flying aroung more people should have been dead. Rapper Treach, acting has improved greatly since the last time I seen him. I thought his laywer was one step from being a criminal himself! AND that lady in the jury needed to be SLAPPED! "He's suffered enough" For pete's sake the guy was scum!!!! GUILTY!!! I almost forgot! Carrie Lowell made a appearance with Candice Bergen as a Judge! Chances are that won't be her last appearance which should make that interesting t.v!

It's interesting to see how many ways they can alter the original theme music for a new show!!
