Today - December 26 - Boxing Day is celebrated in Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and it's a legal holiday in North Carolina. Boxing Day is celebrated in the Commonwealth countries by giving a present to the mailman and, in wealthy households, trading places with the servants for a day. In North Carolina, it's just another day off.

But hey, we in the other 49 states could use another day off! I propose that we make Boxing Day a legal holiday all acorss these United States! Who's with me on this? Let's make Boxing Day an American holiday! :)

We celebrate Boxing Day in my family, by exchanging gifts to friends and to people that we work with..though I do not live in North Carolina, or any of the British commonwealth countires, I am of English heritage, this tradition was passed down by by my British grandparents.

Well, as you all know, I am British but we don't actually "celebrate" Boxing Day in the UK. It is a recognised holiday but we don't give gifts or do anything special to commemorate it. It's not a big deal here at all.

You at least get a peaceful day off. We in the USA "celebrate" December 26 by - yuck - doing more shopping! :eek:

I think it SHOULD be a paid day off!! We need to recover from the festivities and spend gift money on more Christmas loot.

Ahem, uh, Boxing Day is so called because of the English after-Christmas custom for giving a small present to the postman in a box. I don't know if we Americans could do the same for our mailmen, but it's the least we can do for a bunch of guys who keep getting bitten in the posterior by every German shepherd and Doberman pinscher on their block!
