View Full Version : Settling a highly upset stomach... please guys, I'm desperate.
Kay Scarpetta 12-23-2004, 05:42 PM I've never been so sick in my life. I woke up at precisely 2:16 a.m. this morning and got sick everywhere. Between 2:16 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. this morning, I got sick 13 more times.
I haven't gotten sick since this morning, and I can hold down gingerale and popsicles, but my stomach is still churning really badly. I don't even know how I managed to get down here... every muscle in my body aches.
I'm just looking for an alternative to gingerale. I'm so sick of it.. my mother suggested peppermint, but I hate peppermint.
I'll take any suggestions you have guys. It's 2 days before Christmas and as it's looking, I won't be able to be with my family.
Janice 12-23-2004, 05:46 PM Goodness Karly, could it be food poisoning? I had that twice, and it's a horrible ordeal.
With the achy muscles though, it sort of sounds flu like. Can you see a doctor or call your pharmacist? There must be something you can take to relieve yourself of this misery.
Fleet 12-23-2004, 06:41 PM The herb ginger (and ginger root) should work. I use a brand called "Solaray," but any brand should work. My bottle has 550 mg capsules. The directions say take two capsules two to five times/day with water.
About 2 years ago, during the winter, I had that nauseous feeling quite a bit and the ginger did help. It does take about 30 minutes, but it did work.
Kazza 12-23-2004, 06:43 PM I would go to the ER so they can give you an IV to keep you from dehydrating and some medicine to stop you from getting sick
Hope you get better soon :(
bandito 12-23-2004, 07:08 PM Try Alka seltzer or Pepto bismal... both taste horrible but they seem to work for me. Hope you fell better, nothing worse than being sick for the holidays. :(
TheGreatPretender 12-23-2004, 07:22 PM Advil.

Moonlight Lady 12-23-2004, 07:32 PM How bout spearmint tea. I don't like peppermint either.

thank you
Hollow 12-23-2004, 07:41 PM taking tylenol or advil might help. you should just rest in the meantime.

I'm not rolling because I think it's wrong. I'm just observing the ceiling of my house caving in:rolleyes:
Advil is for pain not for upset stomach. When taken with an empty stomach it can cause ulcers
I have had stomach viruses before, too. But I have not thrown up
in a long time, I just get nausea and diarrhea.
vienna waits 12-23-2004, 08:13 PM That sounds like the stomach flu to me. I threw up all the time for a whole weekend and had the runs like never before. Everything went right through me.. I couldnt hold down any food for more than a few minutes.
Mijada 12-23-2004, 08:18 PM I think you need to see a doctor. Throwing up 13 times and still having an upset stomach is not a good sign at all. That really sucks being sick like that right before Christmas though. Hope you get better soon. :)

it can help with an upset stomach regardless to what you may think.
Kay Scarpetta 12-23-2004, 09:58 PM Hi guys... thank you so much for the suggestions. I tried some spearmint tea, and it worked a little. Then I slept for a few hours. I think the best thing for me is sleep right now.
I told my mom I was somewhat better, and though she thinks it probably is the flu, there's a part of her who thinks it was food poisoning also because I got sick so many times. I had Wendy's for lunch, and felt crappy after that. Then we all had the same dinner. I bet it was the Wendy's. I seem to have a knack for getting food poisoning from fast food. Pizza Hut, BK, now Wendy's? Good Lord.
Thanks again guys

Yah. Ginger does wonders. Ginger Ale has only a fraction of what is given in standardized capsules. I use a brand called Nature's Resource, produced by Pharmavite. It was the first brand/company to be USP certified. You take two capsules whenever you feel ill. It works like a charm.
Bread products can also help. Drink only clear liquids, ect.

Lady T 12-23-2004, 11:22 PM You sound like you have a severe case of the stomach flu; the best advice is to sleep and to drink a lot of liquids, and you will be feeling better by Christmas:)

I got sick from a Wendy's burger a few years ago. There wasn't any in our area, and I was happy when one opened near my home. I don't like McDonalds or Burger King, but after my first Wendy's burger, I was hugging the porcelain bowl all night.
Glad to hear you're on the mend Karly. :)

I can only remember one time in my life that I may have gotten ill off of fast-food, and we practically live off of it.
We always make sure that our burgers are well-done before we eat them. We'll actually check them in the drive-thru line and make them fix them if they are not right.

I went thru that IV ordeal and I only threw up once, so I hope you didn't get too dehydrated! The ginger ale had to help that though. But yeah, I'd guess stomach flu. Never had food poisoning, so I don't know how that feels (THANK GOD).

Pepto tastes better the more you take it. Which is depressing that I know that.
But that stuff is the best anti-diarrheal stuff I've ever seen.

They can also give you phenegrine (sp). Which relaxes the stomach muscles. It is available by prescription so you don't have to go to the hospital.

They gave me Bentyl (dicyclomine). It really did calm my system down.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 12-24-2004, 01:11 AM God, I have no idea with this stuff...but I hope you feel better soon :)

I remember sitting in the waiting room of the ER eating ice chips and throwing up....Horrible.
I'm glad you're feeling a little better Karly. You better be all better when Santa comes.

They stuck the IV needle in my arm, and then decided I didn't need it. And they had trouble getting it in my vein. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/icons/icon8.gif Not a good night.

I swore off fast foods. I haven't had any for 2 months. Abstinence is the way to go. ;)

I actually have had an IV before too, when I was 7 or 8. I get dehydrated way too easily when I'm sick :(
And guys, I know it's strange, but all of a sudden it just... went away. I woke up this morning feeling like my normal self. I'm sitting here drinking coffee and eating Chinese food for breakfast

That's the breakfast of champions!! :eat: Kinda like my breakfast of cold pizza and warm beer on a Sunday morning. Actually, I always thought it was weird how people insist that you have to eat a certain thing for breakfast, like cereal, eggs, bacon, etc. But I'll eat just about anything. Chinese food is one of my favorite things in the world, next to Mexican food.
Glad yer feeling better.:D
