Okay, what does it actually mean for a tv show to 'jump the shark?"

Basically it's when you think a show went downhill. It is explained in full on www.jumptheshark.com, but can't remember off the top of my head what a shark has to do with anything.

It's basically people bashing shows they hate. Read some of the stuff on JTS sometime, most of the people there don't know much about the shows they're talking about, and most say "I hate this show it, sucked from day one or whatever" it's all about opinions. I don't take it seriously myself

That site is much more negative than anything else. By definition, the site encourages people to look for faults in the shows. Lots of snide comments are to be found there- like people trying to outdo each other in terms of the sarcasm levels. The shark jumping term comes from an episode of Happy Days where FOnzie literally jumps over a shark.

:yeahthat

I was reading about one show and they couldn't even get the character's names right, I'll take people more seriously if they actually know what they're talking about

I've posted a couple thoughts of my own on JTS. I stayed positive. If a show "jumps the shark", then it's one I like. No matter how bad a season is, if it's one of my favorite shows, I can't bash it. I wouldn't waste my time posting a "Day 1". What's the point? I can bash a show I don't like here, (I hardly do) but I wouldn't go through all that trouble on the JTS site to bash a show. People over there can be just plain rude. I'd rather it be a messageboard like here. There, someone makes a coment and if it makes you mad, you can't confront them about it.

I don't agree that "Happy Days" jumped the shark when Fonzie jumped a shark. I know that's what the site is about. I just personally don't agree of that being the Jumping point for the series.

The more I think about it, the more I don't think Happy Days jumped the shark at all. I mean actors left the show. The producers had to replace them and move on. And I also don't undertstand all the Ted McGinley bashing over there. I think he's a great actor.

I agree! Ted is a great actor, I'm personally tired of him getting blamed for ruining The Love Boat and Happy Days

He doesn't even get credit for joining Married With Children and it lasting lots of years after he joined it, and now Hope and Faith as well

I also don't agree with the origin of the name. I thought, and I'm pretty sure a lot of others feel the same way, that the show jumped the shark when Ron Howard and Donny Most left in 1980.

Thats when the show started its prime in my Opinion.

I Like Ron Howard & Don Most, But I Like Scott Baio & Ted McGinley More.

I visit the JTS site from time to time. Some of the posts are amusing and very observant, others are way off base.

How can a show jump the shark in the first episode?
That is so stupid.
I think a show has to be off the air before you can make a fair assessment as to when it went downhill.

Some people have accounted the show's shark jumping to the final episode. Of course the show got worse after the final episode - there was no more show.

Also, something that seems kind of dumb. They (well 1 person, anyways) said the X-Men cartoon of the 90's jumped the shark in 2000, when X-Men: Evolution debuted. They are two different shows! How can Evolution cause the original to Jump?

That site is so funny. My favorite is:

"It jumped when...*something*...Ross." On the Full House board. There was never a Ross on Full House...

Most people over there are really dumb.

read anything about Tony Danza. People over there think he's the worst actor ever to grace the Earth. And they're not nice about it.
