View Full Version : Cult movies/music/tv/etc.. you're a part of the cult

every genre has it's mainstream fare, and it also has it's cult fare. What are things regarded as "cult classics" or the sort that you actually are a member of what makes it such a thing?

For me...

TV:
Buffy The Vampire Slayer.... I used to make fun of Trekkies, until I got into this show... and then suddenly I realized I am just as bad with this as sci-fi "geeks" are with Star Trek. Much like Trekkies, Buffy has been off the air for over a year now and yet we can still have long in-depth discussions about
Roswell
Arrested Development... too soon to call this a cult series?
South Park
Simpsons
Family Guy... the aforementioned three are all well-known but also are very cult

music:
David Bowie... while he has had some mainstream success, I think he is very much a cult artist, there's two camps, you either GET him, or you don't. I for one, do, and love almost all his stuff.
Yoko Ono... very cult. Huge amongst the art-house crowd and among (some) gays and lesbians, reviled by Beatles fans and most everyone else... much like Bowie, you HAVE to GET her to like her... and she is too complex for most to get.

movies:
Halloween... one of the movies that NEVER gets old, I know what happens but it never ceases to entertain me and leave me on the edge of my seat, even tho after 20 times you know exactly what happens
Alien series (well, this can be mainstream AND cult... mainstream fans think the series sucked after pt. 2, cult fans love Alien 3 and think Alien Resurrection does have moments)
Donnie Darko

The Brady Bunch gets referred to a lot as a cult classic.

I'm a Trekkie of sorts, I love Star Trek: The Next Generation, it's my favorite of the Star Trek series

Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman has a cult following, probably not nearly as big as Buffy, Star Trek, etc...but it's got one, we call ourselves FoLC's (Fans of Lois and Clark) we've got a website for FoLC and everything :D

Hmmm that's all I can think of

Also I've always wondered how do you know if a show has a cult following? I mean with Buffy, Angel, Star Trek, etc...we know from reading about it in magazines, but shows like Freaks and Geeks, My So Called Life all have cult followings, I've just wondered how you know? :)

Trading Spaces and its Family edition. Ohhhh god. [/fangirl]

It definitely became a cult following in the spring of 2002. It was just an ordinary show one day and then BOOM! everybody was soooooo obsessed with it. The Family edition started up in July 2003...Nowadays, I prefer the Family edition over the regular one...a lot more mellow.

The Powerpuff Girls is a super hero spoof. Its not a show targeted at kids nessessarily. I don't know why it's marketed as such.

Beatles are one I think are sort of a grey area. Their fanbase is so loyal and devoted, but at the same time, they were so massively successful that I'm not really sure if it's "cult" or not. Seinfeld and the Star Wars movies are kinda like that too, both do have a big cult following, but at the same time are so massively successful that you wonder if it's really a "cult" following or if it's just huge. I really debated Bowie since he is so famous but then I decided he's only had a couple "big" albums (last of which was 21 years ago) and most of his work usually only sells to the same 300,000-500,000 loyal fanatics everytime out that he is most likely "cult", since about 80% of people I know who like Bowie are "well, I'd like a good Greatest Hits cd of his", whereas the cult followers are "damn, Reality is such a brilliant record". lol

Yup, I know they are far from "cult" status .

Ok, does this count? I love The Doors and Arlo Guthrie.:D

Most of my favorite movies are cult classics, or in the process of becoming one:

The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Shock Treatment
Clue
The Pirate (Judy Garland)
Pride and Prejudice (Colin Firth)
Somewhere in Time
Oscar

My music:

Rocky Horror soundtracks (I collect them. Sad, huh?)
All Richard O'Brien music
Broadway
Judy Garland
Bobby Darin
All of my strange French CDs: Brigitte Bardot, Serge Gainsbourg, Francoise Hardy, Isabelle Adjani... I don't even speak French!
ABBA, especially their songs in German

Desperate Housewives seems to be gaining quite a following, too. I don't see it as a cult following yet, but it's gotten extremely popular.

well, I think the real difference between a "cult hit" and something that's not is... how devoted are the fans. Like for example, Friends was the biggest show of it's time, but most of the time, after the morning after, you didn't see people getting into big discussions about what happened 5 episodes back. Whereas a show like Seinfeld, just about ANY episode you can bring up to a Seinfanatic and they'd begin talking about it.

Shows like Trek, X-Files (at least the Duchovney seasons), Buffy and the sort are like Seinfeld in the way that the fans are so into it that if you go into a chat room with a Buffy fan and suddenly bring up the "Superstar" episode from season 4 (just a random example), you could probably go 15-20 minutes talking about that episode, lol. I think Desperate Housewives is quickly becoming this way.

Well, that does happen when Seinfeld is brought up.

Desperate Housewives most definately is the ultimate water-cooler show

:) I know. I've never heard of anyone that saw it and didn't like it. Definately a cult classic though, since it's not widely known, but those who know it love it.

Seinfeld and Star Wars blur the line between cult and just plain hit.

Seinfeld was a success with the general public, but also has a huge cult following.
Same goes for Star Wars.

thanks, I wondered what the difference between a cult following and just being huge hit was :)

That's the way it is with Lois and Clark, my gosh most people can tell you lines from episodes word for word or what a character was wearing in certain scenes or episodes.

I think DH will be a cult hit eventually, I think it's too soon at this point in time to be a cult hit.

Did anyone mention Charmed?

What about the Superman Movies? I'd say they have a cult following too, same with Batman and Spider Man Movies

I agree with Star Wars more than Seinfeld.

I think Seinfeld is a cult show that the mainstream embraced. In the first 3 1/2 seasons of the show, the ratings were low but it's fanbase was fanatical, and then in early 93 NBC moved it to Thursday's and then it suddenly became a massive hit. But I think it can count as cult because it did have that rabid fanbase who were there for 3 years before the show caught on and became a ratings winner.

yep, I read that. Simpsons is another one of those shows like Seinfeld which is both cult and hit.

Can't forget Dallas, also I would assume Beverly Hills 90210 and Melrose Place have cult followings as well.

As does The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. and I would say the A Team does too
