I think I'm getting better at this. It helps if the original photos are high-quality. My screengrabs with my digital camera are so-so, but at least they're my snapshots. I don't want to use the photos from other websites. Yours and Dirtprod's screengrabs are high-quality.

It was very tricky coloring the credits without affecting Lily behind it. Alot of erasing.

What's that triangle/square shape above and around Lily's head?

Off the side of her head are curtains and the window. Directly above her head are one or two objects on a table. I painted the table green, but the objects on it, I couldn't distinguish what they were. I'll have to look at the Season 1 DVD. I'm indecisive whether to make the Munster complexion green or blue, so I create a color somewhere between.

No, take a real close look at what the arrow is pointing at.

I'm seeing it now. As part of my photo program, I'm making selection outlines to fill in with color. My LCD monitor, if I'm slouching in my chair and not looking at the screen straight on, will darken the image and make me not notice the color indentation shape I ended up putting on the photo. The purple triangle is my coloring of the curtain gone astray.

I'm even more indecisive about what color the Munsters' complexion should be since your picture reminds me that sometimes in the color photographs, Lily looked a whitish grey. Decisions, decisions....
I think I needed to lower the color saturation on Lily's skin on my picture. I don't notice these things until after I post the photos. I have in the past tried removing the photos and reposting them, but that didn't work.

I've noticed that to some degree, too. I think that Lily is the hardest to colorize/tint correctly. I generally tint her a real light flesh-tone and then put light green and light blue washes over that. I did some screen caps of Munster, Go Home so I could get the right colors. Sadly, they were only at their house for the first few scenes.

For your images: Try re-naming the first colorized picture on your computer. Then adjust the color and save the altered one with the old name. Re-upload the image with the same name. It should replace the old file with the new one. As long as you don't alter the size of the picture, it will automatically replace the old one on the page. I've done this several times when I forgot to add the MK.com stamp. Hope this helps!

In "Yes, Galen, There Is a Herman", The little boy Galen says that Herman is green, and Lily is green like uncle Herman. On another event in the episode titled "John Doe Munster" a cop refers to Lily and Grandpa as "green". I can understand Herman being green, but why would Lily and Grandpa be green? Lily and Grandpa are Draculas, and should probably be a pale-white. As for Eddie, I have no idea why a wolf/dracula boy should be green. (Must have inherited it from his father)

After giving it a little thought, (and almost hurting myself in the process,) I suppose blue was a more pleasant sounding color, almost rolling off your tongue like a French word. Green is more of a pale word, as in green around the gills. It is a guess...

I'm really a huge Munsters fan, but I hardly ever watched "The Munsters Today". I did watch it from time to time, but it always seemed fake to me. If you know what I mean...

It could be that the hue of the photo has changed over time.

And Lily has only a trace of paleness and Eddie has no paleness, blueness, greenness....I dunno. I watched a few episodes back then, too. John Shuck was kind of short for the role, wasn't he?
More green references:
1)"A Walk on the Mild Side" Frightened citizens crowd around the patrolroom. An elderly woman says walk-alcoholic Herman was all green and a drunken man refers to him as the Jolly Green Giant and the explanation for his hands being cold was because of all the frozen foods he handles.
2)"The Midnight Ride of Herman Munster" Lily tells Herman he's blushing because he's turning a shade of green.
3) "Far Out Munsters" A beatnik also refers to Herman as the Jolly Green Giant. (Did they ever run the commercial during an episode?)
4)"Herman The Master Spy" One Russian on the boat references American spies in the books they've read. Another says, "But in the books, they weren't green."
5)"Big Heap Herman" One of the wise-cracking Native Americans calls Herman "Ol Green in the Puss".
6)"A Visit From The Teacher" When Eddie's teacher and principal meet Lily, the teacher, agogged, says to the principal, "Mr. Bradley, she's green!" The principal explains: "Malnutrition."

A few posts back you asked if Eddie was ever called green. I remember another episode with a green reference that I left out of my list. In "Herman's Peace Offensive", when the bully says to Eddie, "What's the matter, you yellow?", Eddie answers "No, I'm not yellow. I'm green."

You're right! That means Herman, Lily, Grandpa, and Eddie have all been called green at one point or another. Only Marilyn is regular flesh-tone.

The actors and the writers knew the show was in black & white. They were that blue/green color, as shown in Munster, Go Home. Yet in a couple of pictures I have the surroundings are color, but Herman and Grandpa's faces are almost black & white.

Whether they were called green or not isn't the point with me. It's what color they actually were. In "The Munsters Television's First Family of Fright" by Stephen Cox, from a section called, "It Isn't Easy Being Gray" it says,

"We weren't exactly green. Kind of a faded, shipwrecked gray. Not a distictive color. It looked like a ship with too many barnacles on it." - Al Lewis

It also says that Karl Silvera, (who did Fred's Herman makeup,)
"...rubbed battleship-gray grease across Gwynne's nose, cheeks, chin, and neck, drying the paint with a blow dryer." "The rest of the makeup consists of other colors that fill in the hollows of his cheeks and darken the sockets of his eyes." "Then a yellowish-green is applied over the gray." That could be what this is:

Dirtprod and I have been colorizing and posting Munsters photos for this thread for a while now (with assistance from Munsters#1). It's been a obsession with me for years to see the Munsters series in color. Picking up skills with computer photo programs has granted my wish and Dirtprod has the skills, too. So, until some company actually does colorize the episodes, I ain't gonna stop.

A new picture and a nice one, Dirtprod. I've been working on a new one and it's taking me a while to complete it.

I just had to do this one. I was watching the episode by myself on my laptop in a hotel room, (while I was working out of town.) Herman turned around with the hat on and I laughed out loud.

It's sort of weird when you're by yourself and laugh out loud. You look around to see if anybody noticed. Of course nobody does, because you're alone. But you look around anyway. And usually feel embarrased by it, too. (Which I was...)

Dirtprod, and Laugh30, you both seem to have 2 different versions of The Munsters. Dirtprod sees them as a sky blue, and Laugh30 sees them as a grass green.

In my mind, I picture Herman as grass green (because He's a Monster), Lily and Grandpa are white as snow (because they're Draculas), and Eddie is a pale-pink.

In some of my colorized photos I have made them blue and then I decided to try to get a cross between blue and green. This one I seemed to have edged more toward green.
As usual, I notice an improvement I could of made after I post the picture. The color on Grandpa's gloves could be toned down a bit. I finished this photo on a computer other than my own and I think I didn't notice this because of the resolution of their monitor.

I think everybody has their own idea on what color they are, (beings the show was in black & white.) Myself, I try to make my pictures look like they're really a color picture. I generally go by the colors in the View-Master set, (mostly because it's the first color pictures I remember of the show,) the comic book covers and also some things from Munster, Go Home. Like they say, "to each his own..."

Since '97 I've used an program called Micrografx Picture Publisher (this one is version 8 from '98, but I started with an earlier edition.) I missed edition 9 and just as PP10 came out the company was bought out. I think by Adobe. You can find it on Ebay once in a while. Usually they go fairly high. I find it's far easier to work with than the Adobe Elements program I also have, (and hardly ever use.) I think it's all a matter of what you've used the most. However, I still find new things on occasion. The other day it was text haloing...

There's a photograph of "John Doe Munster" that I've seen before where Grandpa is holding John's hand and Lily and Marilyn are on the right. It was a color photo, and it was shot just when Grandpa said the line, "You're not a little boy, you're 150 years old". or something like that.

BTW, I always wanted to know, why do you call yourself "Dirt"? Is it because people have always treated you like dirt? I'm only asking because it sounds like a great Rodney Dangerfield story LOL :D

I've done some snapshots of View-master frames by using a digital camera. It takes propping the reel in front of a good backlight and being able to do super close-up macro shots with the camera.

It started in '77 when I started working on the road playing music. I got the nickname and it has been with me ever since. Nothing quite as profitable as Getting No Respect did for Rodney.

Before I got introduced to the Internet, I never knew there had been a Munsters View-master. I was too young back then to remember or be exposed to the merchandising at the time of the show's network run.

OIC. I thought you had taken pictures of them. I do have the Munster View-Master reels. If I can find my old View-Master projector, I'll see if I can get pictures of them. (A mission!) Don't know how long it will take, so hang tight...

You do have to register and sign in to see attachments.

I doubt that Yvonne De Carlo and Al Lewis even own computers. Pat and Butch might come here. Beverley Owen doesn't like to associate herself with the show anymore, since she was only in the first 13 episodes. Norman Abbott (one of the directors) might come here and we don't know it.

If they are perusing these pages, I doubt they'd let their presence be known. They'd be swamped with questions about the show until they were driven away... I don't think Butch posts on his own message board.

I'm saddened by Beverley Owen not wanting to be associated with the show. At this point in her life, what could it hurt? I've found Munster fans to be pretty nice folks. :) Beverley, if you are indeed reading this, jump in with both feet, we all love you and only want the best for you! We don't bite, (at least not very hard.)

Is that shot from the Yvonne De Carlo pilot, or episode 2?

It's a screenshot from the Season 1 DVD set. It's the DeCarlo pilot, although the recut version that aired as episode 2 on CBS in 1964. It inconsistantly has the makeup changing from scene to scene (the original footage from the pilot mixed with reshot footage) and it doesn't have that alternate theme song sequence.
Although I already have the original cut of the DeCarlo pilot on a VHS release, I hope, as it has been mentioned on this board, that it is included on the Season 2 DVD box set. Always good to have the crystal clear DVD print.

I agree with you! You could watch a DVD 1,000 times and still would be better than a VHS tape. :D

Looks kinda like the one you made for Season 2.

I think I did improve on coloring the letters.
A difference between the two opening credits was that in the first season version, it's all dark and gothic at the foot of the stairs inside, with the Munster clan looking somewhat menacing. In the Season 2 opener, it's all bright and chipper with surf music, Herman clumsily bursting through the front door, and his vampire and werewolf brood exiting the door (in bright sunlight!)

When Just Another Pretty Face comes out in the Second Season, I'm gonna go wild! :D

There's been a proliferation of "Pique's Pike" because I've been making use of the digital shots I've taken off the DVDs so far and I've been too lazy to get to more of the episodes. I've done enough of "My Fair Munster" and "Pique's Peak" has had its day. (Hmm, there might be some favoritism for "Pike's Pique" since it was the first episode I ever saw.)
Right now I'm working on a scene from "Rock-A-Bye Munster".

You might find this ironic, but my first episode was "Grandpa Leaves Home". The very first episode with Pat Priest.

My station played eps 14-70 first, then 1-13. I don't know why, but they just did. When I first saw "Munster Masquerade", I thought The Munsters entered a third season, but I thought to myself, why would they switch back to the first seasons theme? I was all screwed up till I bought a computer and found episode guides online.

I've mentioned in a previous post that I first saw the series in the early 70s on our local station. I saw the promos announcing its addition to the station and my brother who remembered the show (I didn't), wanted to watch it and told me to see it, too. It was a Monday and "Pike's Pique" was the episode they first showed.
I suspect that it was in production order they could of been showing the series. I'm under the belief that "Pike's Pique" could of been the 2nd episode that was filmed after the "My Fair Munster" pilot since Fred Gwynne's makeup in "Pique's Peak" looks similar to his makeup in the pilot.
Our station didn't show the pilot episode first, though. When I first saw the pilot, I didn't sense anything unusual about it until they went into the theme song sequence. And then you had the different theme and stairs sequence, Al Lewis's long nose extention, sunken cheeks and frizzy hair, and Butch Patrick missing the widow's peak.
And we never even heard of a VCR!

I wonder if you saw the 2nd Presentation. That's gotta be why it was in B&W and there was different music.

I don't know if you recall one of my earlier posts where I said that I remembered that our station had shown an entirely different stairs sequence beginning with a couple of the cast members sitting on the stairs. (Would the cast or the producers be able to verify this?)
Anyway it was the untouched pilot our station showed, not the recut, reshot network telecast from 1964.

By George, I think I've got! The episode you saw with them on the stairs is Pilot #3. That's the pilot filmed in B&W with Yvonne De Carlo and Butch Patrick. This is the last Pilot before episode 1. It featured Butch Patrick without his widows peak on. Episode 2 is actually Pilot #3, with new scenes of Eddie with his widows peak.

This strange music you remember, did it sound like this?

Yes, that's the theme. I would see it again in the 80s when WPIX-11 in New York ran the series. They would alternate when they'd show "My Fair Munster". They would show the original untouched pilot and then for the next telecast they'd show the reshot version that ran on CBS and all the stations that have shown the series in syndication since. (WTBS, WOR, Nickolodeon and TV Land.) You can't see the untouched pilot on television anymore, but I do have it on the VHS release "The Lost Munsters Pilots".
That version of the stairs sequence with two cast members sitting on the stairs I've seen only that one time, around 1973, and I've never seen it turn up again. It did have this alternate theme that you've downloaded here, it just that the visual part was yet another take. It didn't begin with a zombie-like Herman stepping down from the first step to give Lily a kiss, it started with two cast members sitting on the stairs.

I colorized a short segment of the opening sequence.. it's quick, but gives an idea of what the show might have looked like if it were filmed in color.

Munsters#1, you're hinting at something that I've been supposing to myself. Maybe the sequence was shortened. Maybe in a longer cut it begins with Lily and Herman sitting on the stairs, Lily stands up, steps down and then it goes into what we've always seen, Herman stepping down from the stairs.

Whenever Season 2 comes out, I think Image will put the Family of Fright DVD back in print, and we will see the uncut versions of the last 2 pilots. Then, we will finally understand what Laugh30 is talking about! :D

Colorizing has become a hobby for me and it sure passes the idle time away. As close to being an artist as I'm going to get because I can't draw very well.

I wish I stopped at the teeth. It looks like he ate a blueberry pie and forgot to brush.

This is why I don't like to colorize. I always miss something, or forget to color something.

Your photo program should have an eraser tool. You use that to remove color that you've applied.
You are getting good at this.

One thing I still don't get, is, why are The Munsters green? What body chemical is making their skin turn green, and not normal flesh tone?

Well, when you're the Living Dead, you tend to be discolored.

It's still kinda weird to me, because I don't really consider them the living dead, I consider them regular people, because they're just so likable and lovable.

With all this great screen capture technology you guys have, how about a shot from “Autumn Croakus”.
At the start of the teaser, where Lily is standing next to the staircase, there's a stage hand and chair on the adjoining soundstage in the background where the kitchen set usually appears. It should make a for a fun picture. :)

Here's a little helpful hint for those of you who have a DVD player on your PC, but can't take screenshots. If you have programs like Paint, Windows Media Player and Power DVD, this should work out fine.

Step 1. Open WMP.
Step 2. Play a video (not DVD) of something you downloaded from the internet.
Step 3. Open Power DVD. (Do not close your WMP, let the video play.)
Step 4. Play your Munsters Season 1 DVD, or DVD of your choice.
Step 5. While watching your DVD on Power DVD, hit the Print Screen button on your keyboard.
Step 6. Open Paint.
Step 7. Paste out the screenshot in Paint, and save as JPG.

This is what I've always been doing, and it's always worked for me.

I never knew this could be done with the print screen button on the keyboard. In fact, you can also copy and paste a web page with that button and save it as a jpeg.

I do that sometimes.

Just for the weird crazy heck of it, now I'm not insulting your colorizing, as a matter of fact, I think it's excellent, but maybe, do you think you could colorize one photo of the Munsters with a normal caucasian flesh tone? It would be really interesting to see them like that.

It's one of my favorite sight gags on the show, together with the giant mousetrap at the stairs, so both got on my list of photos to colorized.

The sight gags were wonderful. The chewing of nails, the coffin telephone, the coffin dragster, Spot, the kitty with a Lion's roar, a goldfish with a humungous apetite, a smart-mouthed raven! :lol:

I just about matched this time Herman's skin color to what it is in the color Munster Go Home scene.
The goldfish scene you mentioned, that's another favorite.

You did a good job on colorization, except you got some green on the right side of Lily's hair.

Most of the colorizing I do are on a computer other than my own. The monitor isn't as high resolution as mine and I should post the photo after I do a final check on my monitor. Up around her forehead I could do some touchup, but the side of her face it was guesswork where her face began because it was in shadow. I could do some corrrections and repost it.
I departed from making the carpet green and used orange for the carpet on the stairs like you see in Munster Go Home. The mousetrap photo where I made the carpet green as I usually do made Grandpa and Lily look like they were standing on a lawn.

I wish someone who had your talent, at Universal Studios, would colorize Season 1 and 2. It would really be awesome to see what the series would look like in full color!

If you've seen any of the Bewitched colorized episodes, those would be the people to work on the Munsters. I'd be happy with just a couple of episodes colorized, just as a treat.
Inspector Jack, you posted a colorized Munsters video clip you did a while back. Have you worked on any more? I'd have to do some research to see how it's done to make an attempt of my own.

If I had to pick just 5 episodes to be colorized, I would pick, My Fair Munster (episode 2), Low Cal Munster, Hot Rod Herman, Just Another Pretty Face, and Zombo.

I found a caricature print of The Munsters on eBay.

Below is the original, and my colorized version.

You put in a certain little detail there. According to Lily in one of the episodes ("The Midnight Ride of Herman Munster"?), Herman's eyes are two different colors.
Something me and the makeup people for Munster Go Home forgot! My next colorized photo featuring Herman, I'll try to mismatch the eye color.

That's right! I remembered that episode where Lily tells police that her husband has two different eye colors.

I've retitled this last one to give a more accurate description of which version this is. So many official and unofficial filming they did of the theme song sequence.

Ah, that's right! I totally forgot about the pilots! But would'nt it be take 4?

I always felt the lettering would have been green...don't ask me why. :)

I didn't the count the black and white version of the Joan Marshall pilot because it's the color footage converted to black and white. The stairs sequence is the same shot but with the color removed.
For my coloring of the credits, I go with Munster Go Home. The Marshall pilot did have the green or blue coloring to the credits. I haven't seen the Munsters' Revenge in a while so I can't remember what color the credits were in that.

I like the red credits, better than green credits, but if the show went to color, most likely they would use green credits, because something very red on a B&W TV set looks very dark and gray. The red credits would almost be unreadable.

You're an expert at this, you should write and give samples to the dvd execs to give them an idea to colorize season 1 and 2.

I do wonder if any of the people connected to the show, both in front and behind the cameras, come to this board and see the work I've done colorizing these photos.
