Ok, so I drop my little girl off at preschool, right?! Then I take my bicycle and go for a ride in the country about 5 miles out of town where I usually go. I'm just riding along, thinking about the episode of Little House On The Prairie I had watched part of - It was the one where Charles and family take care of an ailing indian chief and his family who are being hunted:) - anyway, as I'm passing this field with a little shed in it, I hear a somewhat loud "aaarroo, arrroo"(something like that. It's hard to write out what it sounded like). Now, I know what hunting dogs sound like as there are quite a few around here, but I've never heard one like this. And I couldn't tell exactly where it was coming from, I've never seen anything in that shed except pigeons flying out of it, and anyway it seemed like the sound was coming more from the forest that's around the field and close to the shed.
So right away my thoughts go to that scene in An American Werewolf In London where that guy is in the subway and he hears the werewolf. Don't you love to scare yourself like that?! :D Oh, and it was a nice, foggy morning with no sun to make it even spookier.
So what did I do? Well like a movie dufus I rode on for a bit and then turned around and went back to where I heard the sound, of course! I didn't hear it again though, so I turned around again and completed my ride.
I suppose it could have been a real wolf. They did release some a while ago about 20 miles north of here. And I realize it could have been a hunting dog, it's just that I haven't heard one make a sound quite like that before. This one was a more mournful sounding howl/bark. Or maybe the Bray Road werewolf emigrated up here because there was too much publicity back where he lived, who knows?!
I'm going to have to ride out there again soon!
...Of course this time I'll be packing some heat with a silver bullet!;)
The Bray Road werewolf, for those who don't know, is this creature that was seen a number of times in Elkhorn, WI. It was even featured on one of those "mysteries of the unexplained" type of shows. Here is a link if you want to read more about it:
