I'm sorry if this story has been mentioned before. I don't remember to much about it and I haven't seen it in a long time, but does anyone remember the story about an elderly black man that went missing but they found his green Dodge Dart in the woods with branches and kindling in the back seat? And they said that was unusual because he was a very neat guy. Also I think he was supposed to have picked his wife up at the airport. Sorry if this has already been discussed. Thanks.

Thats definitely one of the more memorable UM stories, in my opinion. His name was George Owens and he was the pastor of a Baptist church. Its so sad because they said it was one of the few times him and his wife had been apart in all of their years of marriage. He was on his way to pick her up, I think, and had a flat tire. Its something how a seemingly insignificant moment in one's life can completely change it. They think he asked for directions to a certain town and the man misunderstood him and gave him directions to a different town. If not for that, he probably would have made it home safely. I tend to think he wandered off and died in the woods (wasn't he in his 80's). If he met with foul play, the person probably would have stole the car as well. I don't really buy the analogy that George would have never put sticks in the back seat of the car. He was clearly disoriented and thus not thinking clearly so I think he was the one who put the sticks there. Just my two cents.

This was a particularly sad story.

The man was quite old and according to a witness at a convenience store, seemed disoriented. (He purchased an ice cream and then mumbled something).

Regarding his fate, I agree with the other post. He most likely wandered off into the woods and perished.

Very sad story. I seen it many times. He got a flat tire when he was going to pick up his wife. When he was at the service station, he asked the attendant directions to Nollensiville where he was going to pick up his wife. The attendent misunderstood him and gave him directions to Lobbelville instead which was the opposite directions. He was seen at a convience store where he went and got a package of Cigars, then later returned for an ice cream sandwich. On his way out he told the clerk "Me and my wife use to dance, we loved it, but I can't find my wife." So she had him call the local clinic to see if she was there. She should have called the authorities to help the poor old confused man. She said he seemed to be very upset when he was talking about how his wife was missing. He has not been seen since. It is very sad because the end his brother was saying how horrible the family's life has been since Mr. Owens went missing. Also his wife passed away, and will never see him again. I am sure he is long dead by now. :( I wonder if they will ever find his remains.

This story i have seen many times and everytime it reminds me of a scene in a tv mini series back in the 80s called hollywood wives, the actor andrew stevens played a double part in this mini series 1 he was a struggling actor trying to make it in the movies and be a good husband to his new wife, and 2 he played his twin brother whom he didnt know about that was given up for adoption and when he grew up he became a psycho named deak and traveled to hollywood to find and kill his mother for giving him up, well in this 1 scene this black preacher gives deak a ride and when the car tire blows out deak fixes it as the preacher falls asleep in the front seat and then i think deak kills him. but that george owens story always makes me think of that movie.

BTW Robert Stack was allso in hollywood wives.

But his body was never found. That's where it gets confusing. If he had in fact left his car and wandered off into the woods and perished, I would think a search of the area would turn up his body. After all, how far could an 83 year old wander anyway? Especially if he was disoriented. Something would turn up.

I guess he fell off a cliff into a river or something.

I found this case especially heartbreaking. Up until a few weeks ago, I volunteered as an activity assistant at the local nursing home. Many of the clients have dementia and often wander around looking for friends and relatives who are long dead. It's very sad to see.

Aw, that is so sad. :crying:

Estelle Getty is suffering from it, she hardly remembers anything not even having starred in Golden Girls.

I wonder how hard they looked though.

Yeah, they probably figured he was old, not from influential people, and ya gotta go sometime.
