I can't believe Prince didn't get an Album Of The Year nomination. That's a friggin' outrage. :(
vashti1999 12-07-2004, 01:58 PM Surprised, as I was expecting Prince to get an album of the year nomination, but his five nominations in other categories isn't bad.
Best R&B Album (Musicology)
Best R&B Song (Call My Name)
Best R&B Vocal Performance Male (Call My Name)
Best Pop Male Performance (Cinnamon Girl)
Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance (Musicology)
Surprised to see Janet Jackson got a couple of noms for an album that came and went. Nothing at all for George Michael. I predicted a few months ago that Ricky Fante would get a nom but he was shut out. Nothing for Van Hunt either. Britney Spears' Toxic got a nom in the dance category. Lenny Kravitz used to dominate the male rock vocal category, but not anymore. But the biggest shock of all: NO NOMINATIONS FOR ASHLEE SIMPSON!!!

Or Smile. I didn't even know 'til yesterday it was eligible, I thought they'd consider it a reissue, even though it never came out previously. At least you and I can root for our respective favorites in other categories.
vashti1999 12-07-2004, 02:22 PM Kanye West Receives Leading 10 Grammy Nominations; Usher, Alicia Keys Follow With Eight
The Associated Press
Dec. 7, 2004 - Producer-turned-rapper Kanye West collected a leading 10 Grammy nominations Tuesday, including album of the year for "The College Dropout" which avoided typical boasting of sex, money and crime in favor of rhymes about everyday life.
The performer, who isn't afraid to sing his own praises after claiming he was "definitely robbed" when he picked up no trophies at the American Music Awards, also had a nomination for best new artist and shared a songwriting bid for song of the year from religious rap "Jesus Walks."
West said he felt vindicated because it was difficult for him to get a record deal.
"When I made (the album) I thought these were the types of songs I thought the Grammys would like to get behind," he told "E! News Live." "I couldn't even imagine 10 nominations in my wildest dreams. I appreciate being recognized."
R&B romeo Usher and piano songstress Alicia Keys, who collaborated on the hit "My Boo," followed West with eight nominations each, including album of the year for Keys' "The Diary of Alicia Keys" and Usher's "Confessions."
The late Ray Charles, whose posthumous duets album "Genius Loves Company," became the biggest selling album of his long career, had seven nominations including album of the year and record of the year for "Here We Go Again," sung with Norah Jones.
Green Day garnered six bids for its hard-driving rock-punk album "American Idiot" which satirized culture, politics and apathy. The group was nominated for record of the year and best rock song for the title track and best rock album.
Half of West's 10 nominations were in the rap field, including best rap album. He competes against himself in the best rap-sung collaboration with the songs "Slow Jamz," performed along with Twista and actor-singer Jamie Foxx, and "All Falls Down," which he performed with Syleena Johnson.

Superstar 12-07-2004, 05:28 PM I dont think the nominations are so bad. I'm glad that Destiny's Child, Joss Stone and Christina Milian have gotten noms
jamesanthony 12-07-2004, 05:59 PM I've been reading people's predictions about these awards at www.goldderby.com and some people were really getting into it over who would and wouldn't make it in. These awards are what they are I suppose. Every year has choices that people like, hate, pleasant surprises etc. Green Day is the only non-r&b related act up for best album and I would not be at all surprised if they won to tell the truth. They might win best record too, because no rhythm and blues record has ever won that top award. Could you imagine Black Eyed Peas winnng the top single award? Usher might, but that would be very revolutionary if you ask me. I don't think there are enough hip hop fans who belong to the organization who votes for these awards for he, Kanye West or Black Eyed Peas to win in any of the top 3 categories.
Prince could win something, maybe traditional r&B although I heard that song and it sounded more like urban alternative to me- those r&B categories overlap one another if you ask me.
Ray Charles and Norah Jones being nominated for the top award is an extreme case of voting for the persons rather than the actual record- that song was never played on any radio format as far as I know- not even adult contemporary radio. Someone somewhere is laughing about the name of their song "Here We Go Again".
I'm a little pleasantly tickled by the following nominations because I like the records:
Charlene- Anthony Hamilton- I like this song more than what he was up for last year. I'd vote for him over Usher and the others
I'm Still in Love by Teena Marie- for a Caucasian she has a very unpretentious yet convincing way of singing r&B.
Moon River- I always liked Take-6 and of course Stevie Wonder- if you haven't heard this cut it's from Ultimate Mancini which is up in another category. Give it a listen and see if you think it's the best cut in that pop collaboration category- the harmonies are very tight and beautiful to me! They deserve to win.
Al Green and Anita Baker are cool. I bet a lot of people are groaning about Los Lonely Boys up for record of the year, but it's the type of popular and uplifting song that the grammy people like to nominate and personally I like it although the hip factor wouldn't think so. Nice to see Ronie Milsap got a mention. I must check that one out. Seal's song is good too.
BTW- Vashti1999 do you get $$$ to do all that typing?:D I'm tired just thinking about it.
Janet McFarland 12-07-2004, 06:09 PM Thanks for the nomination info.. they're ok.. glad to see Josh Groban got one :D
MissZero 12-07-2004, 09:59 PM WOOOHOOO..go Ursherr nd Alicia nd Prince

I was just kidding about the typing. It was a copy and paste job, though I did do a bit of formatting just so it'd look less cluttered than Grammy's page where I copied it from.
David 12-07-2004, 10:27 PM Interesting list. I'm not exactly :woohoo: about it, but I guess it's alright. And did they release the nominations early? I thought they usually do it in the end of December or beginning of January. Hmm.
