For all of you senior citizens on the board :joke: , if you want to mention a (vinyl) album as opposed to cd, that's cool too. For me, the first cd I ever purchased is my favorite all-time album period. Prince's Sign O The Times. It was my birthday of 1988 and I didn't even own a cd player yet. CDs were still somewhat new back then. So since it was my birthday and I had money, I wanted to treat myself to something. My favorite hangout was Tower Records, I practically lived in that store, buying cassettes and 12 inch singles. So that's where I headed looking for something to buy.

All through 1987, all I listened to was Sign O The Times. I already owned it both on vinyl and cassette. I was obsessed with that album. And since I had never held a compact disc in my hand, never saw one close up, on impulse I bought the Sign O The Times cd that day at the record store. I figured I'd get a cd player eventually, and I had to buy something for myself, so I thought I'd just let myself be content with simply buying my first ever cd. I ended up being so fascinated with the compact disc when I got home that I made a decision to buy myself a player the next day. So the first cd I ever bought, I owned for 24 hours before I owned anything to listen to it on.

I only remember mine because this wino tried to take it from me on my way back from the record store  Bitches Brew had been out for a couple years & my grandmother still gave me a hard time because it had "bitch" in the title. I was just kid & people thought I was weird because I was listening to Miles Davis at such a young age lol

The first album I ever bought was the soundtrack to Flashdance on vinyl back in 1983 (though I now have it on CD).

The first CDs I ever bought were Hysteria by Def Leppard and Appetite for Destruction by Guns N' Roses in August of 1988. I bought them with money I recieved for my 12th birthday.

Didn't you know? Bitches Brew is very popular on the wino circuit. ;)

Did any of you older guys start re-buying all your old favorite albums and cassettes on cd? I did. Early on, I made it a point to get the compact disc versions of all the old Prince albums/cassettes I had, then it was whatever I considered big favorites, like Stevie Wonder's Innervisions or Michael Jackson's Thriller, etc.

Yep, the first year or so that I bought CDs, I pretty much re-bought all my favorites that I had on vinyl/cassette. I really loved CDs back then because of the longbox's they came in lol I remember one of the first CDs I bought was The Jacksons "Victory" - one of my most played records in the 80's lol I also had ALL of Rod Stewarts vinyls & had re-bought them all on cassette & when CDs came about, I re-bought them again on CD. I was a BIG Rod Stewart fan back then  I was going broke buying CDs when they came out, much like I am now with TV-DVDs

I think the first CD I ever got was The Judds "Why Not Me" in the early 90's. I have no clue what the first cassette I got was, though. I had many of them in the 80's.

Same here on all counts. You know, I think Victory was one of the earlier cds I bought too. EWF's That's The Way of The World was another. I also started buying alot of greatest hits collections on cd too. I forgot about the longboxes. Some of them I cut up and used the pictures in scrapbooks or some sort of collage. I still have most of the whole longboxes to the Prince cds somewhere.

So Jazz, how big a Rod Stewart fan were you? Do Ya Think I'm Sexy Rod? Passion Rod? Love Touch Rod?

I loved anything by Rod. I liked all of his early-70's rock. Passion was a favorite of mine out of his late 70's/early 80's stuff. 2 of his albums from the 80's (Foolish Behavior & Body Wishes) have never been released on CD. I finally found one of them on cassette at some record store in the Bronx back in '89 lol So I've always kept my vinyls of those close by. I don't care too much for the standard stuff that Rod's been doing the last couple years, but hey - he's selling them CDs & selling out at concerts again! lol I believe the reason Rod's doing these standards now is because his vocal chords were damaged when he had thyroid cancer & had to have throat surgery a few years ago & he can't scream like he used to and these songs are easier on his vocal chords.
