Thirty years ago today. . . November 28, 1974. The fourth Thursday of the month, it is marked by Americans as Thanksgiving. In New York on this night, an Englishman given the name of Reginald Kenneth Dwight, now known legally and popularly as Elton Hercules John, acknowledges the holiday by mentioning its significance and by then bringing on a special guest at his concert in Madison Square Garden that his audience is certain to be thankful for. . . .
"Ladies and gentlemen, John Lennon!"
John Lennon, the former Beatle, strode on stage with a guitar, and he and Elton John performed their collaborative number-one hit "Whatever Gets You Through the Night." John had promiosed Elton to appear at one of his concerts if the song hit number one, assuming that it wouldn't. Even "Imagine" only hit number three in the States, after all.
The pair then played "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," a Bealtes song Elton had just covered with help from John - calling himself "the reggae guitars of Dr. Winston O'Boogie." Afterwards, they closed their set by playing a number written by "an old fiance" of John's named Paul - "I Saw Her Standing There."
Lennon left the stage. He had just given the last public perfromance of his career. :(
The entire three-song set was taped, and their cover of "I Saw Her Standing There" was released as a B-side in America (just like the Bealtes original!), backing Elton's "Philadelphia Freedom."
