Does anyone know why the "Barney Miller" show did not continue making episodes?

My father told me the show was not as popular anymore. I think it was the ratings. Barney Miller had a good run it was on from 75 to 82.

Barney miller was not cancelled due to low ratings. It was creator Danny Arnold's decision to end the show after it's 8th season. The writing was strong right up until it ended , which is why the won an emmy for outstanding comedy series in 1982
