I read today in a October 1974 issue of TV guide why Rhoda's Wedding was hype up so much. It was because she was constantly losing at finding love so i guess to have her character finally getting married was BIG NEWS-lol

I could've told you that, LOL. I think a lot of women (myself included) really related to Rhoda's struggles in that area, so it was a big deal for them to see her overcome it. People rooted for her, especially since they knew from watching TMTMS how badly she wanted to be married.

Yeah since I wasn't a Mary Tyler Moore fan. i never knew the history of the Rhoda character

I was one of the millions who watched. For me, the reason it was such a big deal was that we'd been with this character for four years. And when "Rhoda" debuted, she met Joe in the first episode. We then watched their relationship develop week after week for a couple months, leading up to a wedding that featured most of the cast of the MTM Show. The plot of the wedding episode had something to do with Phyllis being responsible for Rhoda not making it to her wedding on time. So Rhoda was racing across Manhattan in her wedding dress trying to get to her wedding. It was a great episode. The first season of "Rhoda" was very enjoyable, but the show started going downhill after that.

I don't remember anyone hating Joe. I do remember that what was being written just prior to the third season, about the decision to have Rhoda and Joe separate, was that the writers felt it had been a mistake to have Rhoda get married (not just to Joe, but to anyone). They didn't know what to do with a married Rhoda. She had been funny in the past as the loser with a sense of humor. Now she wasn't a loser anymore, so she was boring. The writers wanted to take her back to what she was before when viewers loved her. So they had to end the marriage. But they eventually learned Rhoda's marriage wasn't the only problem with this series. The real problem in the end was Rhoda just didn't work as a lead character. By the end of the series, Rhoda acted more like Mary Richards than Rhoda. And her sister Brenda had transformed into Rhoda, complete with weight jokes and single jokes (though by the last season, Julie Kavner had slimmed way down, like Valerie Harper, so the weight jokes didn't work on her anymore, either). And then Rhoda wound up working for a guy who looked and acted suspiciously like Lou Grant. And then there was that Johnny Venture character who was as arrogant, and nearly as idiotic, as Ted Baxter. So essentially, they tried to give Rhoda her very own show, but ultimately tried to turn the whole thing into another MTM Show. They wound up just creating a big mess.

So why was Rhoda considered a loser at one point? Because she wasn't involved with a man?

I don't know if Rhoda really was considered a loser so much as she saw herself as one. She was overweight (until Valerie Harper lost some weight and they wrote that in), and she just had really, really bad luck with men.

I think those were things women related to, and once she was married, she kind of lost something.
