I seem to recall that another former rocker went this route too as well as a former tv star, but I'm drawing a blank. Anyone know?

David Lee Roth Trains to Become Paramedic

NEW YORK (AP) - Rocker David Lee Roth, the former Van Halen frontman, is taking up a new trade.

Instead of screaming "Jump," he'll be yelling "Clear!"

Roth, 50, has been riding for several weeks with a New York ambulance crew in training to become a paramedic, The New York Post reported Tuesday.

"I have been on over 200 individual rides now," said Roth. "Not once has anyone recognized me, which is perfect for me."

The singer, who spent a decade with Van Halen before embarking on a solo career, except a collaboration with the band for two new songs on a greatest hits album, has been riding along with crews in the Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn several nights a week.

His training seems to be going well.

Several weeks ago, Roth saved the life of a heart attack victim in the Bronx by using a defibrillator.

He takes his work so seriously that he did not want publicity so that it would not "diminish what I am trying to do here." He has said that he did not want the neighborhoods he was working in named so that he would not draw attention to himself or co-workers.

"You would never know you were dealing with a rock-'n'-roll guy," said Linda Reissman, Roth's EMS consultant and tutor. "His commitment really is touching. He wants to help people."

I applaud "Diamond Dave" for being a survivor of the music business, and finding something else that is giving back to society, by trying to save lives.

Not to take away from his years with VH. I'm sure he has enough R&R money that he can now do this.

David Lee Roth a paramedic? Somehow I just don't think so.

Would anyone really want David Lee Roth to be their paramedic?

I respect the fact that DLR, has the inspiration or need to try something else in his life.

In my opinion, he has said, okay the rock thing is good, but let me see if there are other things out there in life that I can work at. I respect that more, than some of these former rock stars on reality television.

Why not? He's not a druggie or alcoholic. He actually came from a medical family. I believe his father was a surgeon.

You are correct. DLR is a very intelligent person.

a lot of people don't realize DLR is an "act", I've seen interviews with him where he's not "in character", and he's just a regular guy. The over-the-top showman that you see in videos and awards shows is more or less a character he plays.

Doesn't mean he's going to have the intellect of a surgeon. I just figure he should stick to what he's good at.. which is pretty much nothing. :)

It will take a lot more than not being a druggie or an alcholic and coming from a "medical family" for me to hire someone to be my paramedic or my surgeon. Like maybe, 8 years or so of medical school?
Is that a simple and direct enough answer to the question of why one might not want DLR to be their paramedic or their surgeon?

I have a couple of friends who became pararmedics. It took them at least a couple of years to gain the skills. I'm sure DLR is capable of doing that.

Just so long as he doesn't take any shortcuts then that will be fine then... JUMP!

no, he's the original lead singer (1978-1985) of Van Halen, one of the greatest hard rock bands in history. Keel is the guy who started out metal and went country.

I wouldn't have a problem with David Lee Roth as my EMT once his training is complete. The article states that his trainer praises him and gives him high marks for his commitment and for taking his training seriously.

I think it's great that he's embarking on a new career. I wish him well. I always thought he seemed like a nice guy.

I think it is unfair that people don't want DLR as a paramedic just because of who he is and who he was. MY POINT was that it wasn't like DLR was Jim Morrison(nothing against him, but the guy had his demons) All DLR was was a lead singer of a rock band. He wasn't an ex con or a drug addict looking for money. I have no problem with DLR as my paramedic. I think some people are too quick to judge him because of who he was.

I take back any doubts about him that I might have expressed that were based on who he supposedly was or is. Although, I never implied that I thought of him as an ex-con or a drug addict. I just basically stated that not being a drug addict was not exactly what I would consider as a recommendation for being a paramedic.

Anyway, like Janice said, he has always seemed like a nice enough guy, and I'm sure he has a good head on his shoulders. Wanting to be a paramedic is commendable all by itself. If he becomes one that would something to be admired.

Some of you need to lighten up. I was only kidding. If he passes everything and proves to do as well as the other paramedics, then good for him.

It's Okay, Lacey. I laughed at your comment. Pretty hysterically, actually.
