Starting right before the decade with Rosemary's Baby, the 1970s had some of the best horror films of all time. Besides the hundreds of Dracula/Monster movies that came out, there were some great stories - a young author from Maine named Stephen King was becoming popular, and Vincent Price was still raising hell. What was the best horror film of the seventies?
I really love all the movies that I can think of from this genre in this time:
Rosemary's Baby (1968)
The Excorcist (1973)
The Stepford Wives (1975)
The Omen (1976)
Carrie (1976)
Halloween (1978)
The Shining (1980)
and I'm sure there's a bunch more that I'm missing. I think I'm gonna go with the Omen. Just an old favorite of mine.

Alien is great, I haven't seen it for years, though.
Jaws was great, too.

Though I don't really care for this genre, Steven Spielberg's Jaws is by far my favourite 70s horror flick.

The Stepford Wives
Carrie
Halloween
Rosemary's Baby is a fantastic film. Very few special effects- it's more psychological horror. Just got it on DVD- the book is brilliant (as is Ira Levin's other book, The Stepford Wives).
