John Candy's one of my very favourite comedic actors/actors and so it's tough to keep my list short. It may be worth noting after his death many were surprised to learn that he appeared in almost 60 films considering he died in his early 40s and one of the reasons we were given is because he had a hard time turning down movie offers.

- Canadian Bacon ('95)
- JFK ('91) (small role)
- Home Alone ('90) (small role)
- Uncle Buck ('89)
- The Great Outdoors ('88)
- Planes, Trains & Automobiles ('87)
- Vacation ('83) (small role)

Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Uncle Buck, and The Great Outdoors. To me they're the quintessential Candy movies. Summer Rental and Only The Lonely I think are his two most underrated.

Speaking of Candy, I do have his rare horror outing on VHS, the 1976 film The Clown Murders.

John Candy movies............

Home Alone is a favorite- he has a great role in that one.
Cool Runnings is good too.
Another favorite is Splash.
I generally like Uncle Buck, but I watched it once and it was one of those movies that was kinda sweet in some ways, but it had so much foul language and other things that made me not want to see it again.
When it's edited, Planes, Trains & Automobiles is hilarious- I do like that. (I've only seen the edited for TV version, which isn't too bad. As a rule, I generally don't watch R-rated movies. There are very few exceptions for that- if it's an edited version on TV, that's the only way I've watched some R-rated movies [which is still a very small number.] The only one I've seen in theaters is "The Passion of the Christ".)

The Great Outdoors and Summer Rental are pretty good too.
I watched Canadian Bacon a while back and it is funny in some ways- but I mostly thought it was pretty stupid- so I don't get into that much. But John Candy does a great job as always.
And I can't forget to mention Spaceballs of course- classic Star Wars and Star Trek (and other scifi franchises) spoof.:)

I also like Rookie of the Year- great baseball movie. (Candy was an announcer in the movie.)
And the Boris and Natasha movie.
And I definitely like The Rescuers Down Under, for which he did a voice.
Who's Harry Crumb? is cool too. He was also in Little Shop of Horrors- one of those cult classics I've had on the radar for a while, but only seen bits of...
He's also in Stripes and The Blues Brothers and 1941- some comedy classics. (None of which I've seen yet, but they are pretty iconic.)

And I can't forget his appearances on Sesame Street as Yosh Shmenge!:)
He showed up as this character in the 1988 special "Put Down The Duckie".
And of course- one of my favorite movies from this list- "Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird":)

So many good John Candy Films. I may make a list of Top-8 Best/Worst John Candy Films...even when the movie sucks...John Candy STILL makes it shine!

Not too long ago I saw one of John Candy's films that's not among his most well-known, 1983's Going Berserk.

Candy plays a limo driver who is about to marry the daughter of a U.S. senator. The senator strongly disapproves saying that he doesn't make enough money.

Meanwhile, the senator is involved in a heated court case w/ a mind-controlling religious cult and they try to use hypnosis on John Candy to assassinate him.

The main cast consisting of John Candy, Joe Flaherty and Eugene Levy are all from the Canadian sketch comedy series SCTV.

The film features Dixie Carter, Kurtwood Smith, Ernie Hudson, Elizabeth Kerr, Paul Dooley and Rosalind Chao in small roles.

It's not a bad film.

Planes Trains and Automobiles, Uncle Buck, The Great Outdoors, Armed and Dangerous. I'm surprised ya'll didn't mention Volunteers with Tom Hanks and Tom's wife Rita Wilson. I haven't seen it in a long time but i have it on my list of stuff i wanna get from Amazon.com. Have ya'll seen Volunteers? He was also in Splash with Tom Hanks. Splash was alright but it's not one of my favorite John movies. I wanna see Summer Rental and that's also on my list of stuff i wanna get from Amazon.com. RIP John. He was very funny. How old was he when he died and how did he die? What year did he die?

John Candy was 43 when he died. He died in Mexico on March 4, 1994 from a heart attack. No doubt brought on from years of being overweight.

He was filming Wagons East when he died. From IMDB: "His few remaining scenes were either not filmed, or were filmed using a stand-in, then re-written not to involve him. His second bar sequence re-uses footage from his earlier bar sequence."

I like him in the Great Outdoors the best. I mean he was good in every movie that I saw him in. I've never seen Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

I watched his biography a while back. He was the owner of the Toronto CFL team, I think. Its too bad he's been dead for 20 years. I miss him.

John Candy was the best. I remember hearing it on the radio when he died. We lost him way too soon.

I read that Ryan Reynolds and Colin Hanks are making a documentary on him.

1. Planes, Trains and Automobiles - hard to pick #1 but I think this was his best overall
2. Uncle Buck - it's hard to imagine anyone else in the role
3. Splash - he didn't have that big of a role but he made it memorable
4. Summer Rental - I can never turn it off when flipping channels
5. Stripes - a great cast
6. The Great Outdoors - it has grown on me over the years
7. Spaceballs - a funny Star Wars parody
8. Only the Lonely - he showed he could do drama
9. Cool Runnings - loosely based on a true story
10. Brewster's Millions - this one with Richard Pryor had the potential to be much better

I believe John Candy did a small cameo role in the drama JFK. But even in some of his comedy movies like Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and Only The Lonely some of his scenes have a dramatic undertone to them.
