L.I. Teen Arrested For Planting Fake Bombs In School

MIDDLE ISLAND, N.Y. -- A Long Island teenager who twice placed fake bombs in a soda machine at his high school has been arrested, police said Monday.

Jesse Saliba, 16, of Shirley, was arrested Sunday and charged with two counts of placing a false bomb, said Detective Lt. Kevin Brennan, of the Suffolk County police arson squad.

Saliba put a fake bomb in the tray of a soda machine near the gymnasium of Longwood High School, in Middle Island, on Oct. 5 and again on Nov. 3, Brennan said.

Both times the school was evacuated until the bomb squad determined the devices weren't dangerous.

After arson investigators analyzed the devices and consulted with school officials, they determined that Saliba was the culprit, Brennan said.

Police did not know if Saliba had retained a lawyer, and a telephone call to the Suffolk County district attorney's office was not immediately returned. Saliba's home number was unlisted.

A fake bomb was planted at the high school late last year and another earlier this year, Brennan said, but those incidents were still being investigated.

The principal made an announcement about this today. She said that the kid could be facing up to 14 years in prison. Such stupidity.

The same thing happened when I was in HS. This 'kid' bored to tears would put a fake bomb in the snack and soda machines and blow them up. One time, he made a fire extinguisher blow up too and filled the hallway with that foam. He got suspended but I don't think anythin else was done to him.

It's so much worse now. The most I remember everyone having to put up with when I was in school was stiink bombs in middle school. Of course those were wrong, and they smelled like rotten eggs.
I'd hate to have to put up with what everyone has to put up with today. The constant terror threats etc. The fact that not only do kids think about this a lot more than they use to, but some of them actually go through with it. Sometimes schools now even have lock downs, luckily we never had any of those. Campuses are even considered 'closed' during school hours where as before visitors could come on campus because there wasn't the impending doom of someone blowing up and/or going on a killing spree. This world becomes a more dangerous place everyday.

Well, not too long a ago, a friend of mine seriously, desperatly wanted a GTA San Andreas, that during lunch time, he went to a local game store to try to attempt to steal it. He wanted to see the game and in front of the camera, he snuck it into his jacket, quickly walked to the door and then started sprinting for like 2 blocks when he stopped a Wendy's to catch a breath until a guy in the security room got a good look at my friend attempting to steal it. The guy got the game back and the info of my friend. The principal found out and suspended my friend for 5 days.

Well, both incidents aren't the same, but I think teens these days aren't thinking before the act.

haha we went on lockdown a few weeks ago and the school warned the rest of the school in the area because of the mysterious man.

all kinds of **** goes on in this town.

My senior year two freshmen girls decided they wanted the day off, so they called in a bomb threat. All hell broke loose in school that day. As we all heard we just got up from class, into each others' cars, and left. None of us even bothered to get our absences excused, we didn't know what was going on. It wasn't even a year past Columbine, so it wasn't anything to joke about. I don't know what happened to the girls, but I think they got expelled. It certainly wasn't funny.

No, I didn't really think there was a bomb, but I wasn't taking any chances, you know? The police weren't doing anything about it as far as we could see, and some people really were terrified. If you want the day off, skip. It isn't worth scaring over a thousand people into thinking you'd blow up the school.

For murder they can; for arson, hmm. Not sure.

School shootings have actually been a problem much longer then most people tend to think. The first major school shooting took place in 1978 when a girl went to school on a Monday and shot a bunch of kids in her english class. The girl who did the shootings was known as a shy and well behaved student, and something had set her off. When the police asked the girl why she shot her fellow students her reply was, "I don't like Mondays". The punk group the Boomtown Rats did a song about her in 1979 called "I Don't Like Mondays". There was also a major shooting in 1984 in Maine. A student had read Stephen King's novel Rage (written under the pen name Richard Bachman) and somehow thought that the book was telling him to kill some of his fellow students.
When I was in high school from 1990-1994 stories about school shootings were in papers at least a couple of times of month.

In New York, manslaughter, armed robbery and carjacking and murder, as Karly said, are violent crimes If you commit them when you are 16, you would be tried as an adult.
