In my one prime time directory book Mathhew Lawerence's charachter's name is listed as Newman. Was this supposed to be his last name before making him Shawn's half brother or was it maybe supposed to be his step dad's last name he'd been going by until he reunited with Shawn and Chet.

Yep you're exactly right, his name was Jack Newman, then when he got to know Chet and Shawn more, he adopted the Hunter name :)

When was that established anyway? I've never seen an episode where he was called Jack Newman. I have read that that's what they were originally going to call him, but as far as I know on the show he was always called Jack Hunter.

If I remember right, in "Brothers"(matt lawrence's first episode) he said his name was Jack Newman I'm pretty sure, and I think Feeny or someone called him Mr. Newman

Hmmm. I didn't catch that part in "Brothers." Also, I always remember Mr. Feeny calling him Mr. Hunter. I believe you, I just don't remember that. Then again, the Disney channel edits a lot. Maybe I'll have to look for that whenever the fifth season DVD comes out.

I could be wrong too :) I thought I remembered Jack introducing himself as Jack Newman in "Brothers"
