I just started reading Ernest Hemingway's novel, "The Sun Also Rises" just to see what it was like, and in the first chapter I was able to pick out similarities to Niles Crane, through the character of Robert Cohn.
*Robert Cohn attended Princeton, while Niles went to Yale...
*Robert married the first woman that was nice to him.
That, to me, sounds like something Niles tends to do. He met Maris when she was unable to open the gates outside her mansion....and then, of course, Mel wooed him by throwing a few compliments his way.
*Robert divorced his first wife and married a magazine editor.
Niles divorced Maris and married her plastic surgeon.
*Robert is awe struck by an American girl who lives in Strasbourg...that reminds me of Niles obsession with Daphne (British), lol!
*Both Robert and Niles spend social time in coffee shops - Robert, Café de Versailles, and Niles, Cafe Nervosa!
*Robert was a middle-weight boxing champion of Princeton, but he didn't like the sport.
Niles took kickboxing for self-defense, not of his free will.
Ok, that was only chapter 1!
