My favorite was Peter Marshall version. He was a natural at hosting the show without being an obnoxious game show host. His personality had a way of putting one at ease and is enjoyable to watch.

I also liked the John Davidson version of the show. He was a panelist many occasion on Peter Marshall's version. He served as a good replacement for Peter Marshall when they brought back Squares in 1986.

I did not like the Tom Berguson version of the show. It was horrible and I was glad when they took it off. I did enjoy the game show host week when the past game show host and panelists got together. The night that Peter Marshall hosted the show brought back good memories.

I couldn't agree more! I should've taped the entire package GSN ran the original in March 2002. All hope is we may never see it again but perhaps someday!:crying:

Peter Marshall of course, the rest suck, and is the reason why I do not tune in to watch this game show anymore...

I usually love the Peter Marshall version that the old GSN ran since 2002. But now, (POOF!!) it's gone!:( GSN does not run Peter Marshall's "Squares" anymore, the Bergeron version on weekends from the Whoopi era (1998-2002) are the only one left that it is on the new GSN. Maybe someday, it will run the post-Whoopi episodes (2002-2004).

Being an 80's child, I like Davidson's version better. It seemed to me that it was more spiced up and entertaining than Peter Marshall's version.

Marshall and Davidson

Me too. The problem with Peter Marshall's version as times was changing the show was getting stagnant. Peter was a great host and was at ease at doing the show.

Davidson's version was very good. The only thing I did not like about the show was the final season when Joan Rivers an Jm J. Bullock became regulars and Bullock being a substitute host. Yuck.

I liked Bergeron. I did also enjoy Marshall's for it's nostalgic value and the celebrities that were on, I say the same for Davidson, but Bergeron gets my vote.

I liked each version of it, but not w/ out a few glaring faults.

Marshall's - the only gripe I had w/ it was when GSN did not pick up additional eps. of the Marshall run, b/c eventually, I got tired of seeing the same old 200 eps. that GSN kept rerunning over and over.

Bauman (MG/HS Hour) - THE LESS SAID, THE BETTER!!! :(

Davidson - The best version of them all to me! The best HS set! The best HS theme song, but as for JD, well while he did have control over some of the celebs, he didn't keep control of the celebs the way Marshall and Bergeron did. And my gripe w/ this version is also that JM. J. was an annoying ******* that just UGH!

Bergeron - My problem wasn't w/ Bergeron himself, b/c Bergeron managed to maintain control over the celebs like Marshall did before him and even brought his own style to the show as well. The big gripe was during the Whoopi-era. And here's why:

Whoopi Goldberg was very annoying and I also hated the way they kept on showing her ugly mug on everybody else's questions all the time.

Bruce Vilanch is just as annoying as Whoopi is, especially w/ his lame jokes he came up w/ and his presence is just as annoying, too!

The same holds true for Ms. Rhea as well!

And I don't even wanna start w/ that awful $100,000 bonus round that was brought in during S4, but thankfully that bonus round and Whoopi, Bruce, and Caroline were all gone after S4! ha ha! The show was a breath of air in the post-Whoopi years! Much better bonus round and much better set, too!

THE WINNER IS: DAVIDSON!!!

It's Tom Bergeron not Tom Berguson.

Both the Marshall and Davidson versions. Davidson, IMO, did a very commendable job filling PM's shoes.

For humor, Marshall hands down. With the cream of the crop like Lynde, Gobel, Wally Cox, Rose Marie, Charley Weaver, et al.

Those who aren’t old enough to remember it can go to YouTube and see it anytime.

One thing that DID bother me about the Marshall version was the gameplay. More often than not, the first square picked was in a corner, then one where three in a row at the start wouldn’t be possible, then another pick like that—making for extremely long games. Starting in the center square was always the proper way to start—- if the contestant is correct and gets the square, no matter which square was next picked, if the contestant was wrong, a quick 3-in-a-row was possible.

The scandals of the late 50s gave birth to Standards and Practices—but I would say that the contestants on the Marshall version may have been “strongly coached” to drag out a game. That, in and of itself, equals less money to cough up day to day.

Does anyone else remember that so-called “strategy”?
