ALANIS MORISSETTE GUEST STARS AS A SINGER IN THE LAIR; TAVIS SMILEY GUEST STARS AS THURGOOD MARSHALL - When the news reaches home that J.J. is MIA, everything seems to remind Helen of her missing son. Looking for answers, Jack decides to go to Washington, D.C. and agrees to bring Meg, not realizing she has an alterior motive. Upon their return, the family receives an unexpected package from J.J. during Thanksgiving dinner. Meanwhile, instead of spending Thanksgiving with his family, Sam goes to Melanie's house and meets Thurgood Marshall. Alanis Morissette ("You Oughta Know") guest-stars as a singer in the Lair singing "Offer" and Tavis Smiley ("The Tavis Smiley Show") guest stars as Thurgood Marshall.

FANTASIA BARRINO ("AMERICAN IDOL") GUEST STARS AS ARETHA FRANKLIN - J.J. is found alive in the jungle by Rene, a Frenchman who takes him in. However, when J.J. learns that Rene turns over American soldiers to the Vietcong, he tries to escape. Meanwhile, Meg is upset when she is asked to speak about J.J. during the assembly to honor East Catholic students serving in the war. Helen goes to see a psychiatrist that Beth recommends, but finds that the best medicine is the hope in her new grandson, John Pryor III. Guest star Fantasia Barrino as Aretha Franklin.

SINGER JOJO GUEST STARS AS A YOUNG LINDA RONSTADT - In a commercial-free episode sponsored by Ford, Helen teaches Beth some important tips on caring for her new baby. However, Beth becomes infuriated when Helen invites Mr. Mason over to the house to meet his new grandson. J.J. is barely alive but he manages to keep walking through the jungle in search of the American camp. He eventually finds another American soldier, Joey Tremain. Together, they encourage each other to stay alive until they find the South Vietnamese Camp of Tay Ninh. Meanwhile, back at home, Meg gets upset when Army recruiters visit the campus and encourage students to enlist. Meg takes off when Chris Pierce and two of his friends decide to take matters into their own hands at the recruiting center. Guest star JoJo stars as a young Linda Ronstadt.
