View Full Version : The Alvin Show or Alvin and the Chipmunks?
The Alvin show or Alvin and the Chipmunks? Which show is better?
I like the Alvin show much better. I liked the theme song, and of course the Clyde Crashcup cartoons were hilarous.
Steve Carras 10-28-2004, 12:21 AM I agree with your seleciton. THe Alvin SHow was funny, had a 6 minute ALVIN, thena 6 minute CLYDE segment then some 3 minute ALVIN music videos,or maybe three.
The old show had the unqiue sound FX of Joe SIracusda of JAY WARD fame, tghe stylizations of Leo Salkin and Jules Engel of UPA and the original Ross Bagdasarian Sr. voices costarring SHepard Menken (the WESTERN AIRLINES bird in Southern California in all those airplane ads, the one who'd would kick, kick back, drink some champagne, and utter the beloved: "The o-o-o-n-n-ly way t'fly) as Clyde Crashcup, whose nasal voice was borrowed from veteran British character actor Richard Haydn (then guesting on a DICK VAN DYKE and the Caterpillar in Disney's ALICE in radio as well)(plus June Foray, Bill Lee, Johnny Mann, Lee Patrick, Joe Besser, Reg Dennis, William Sanford, Tedd Pierce, and Paul Frees).
The Clyde squences with him sketching plans for (in real-life and in toondom) already-existant inventions come to life were, well, inventive.

RepublicEagle 10-28-2004, 02:43 PM Would you believe both series? I just can't make up my mind...
musicradio77 10-28-2004, 08:29 PM I rather like both shows.
Little off topic, but they should have given Clyde Crashcup his own show. Also, I hope the Alvin show is released on DVD soon.
jamier42 10-30-2004, 07:35 PM I like both of them.
Moondance 10-31-2004, 04:38 PM Alvin and the Chipmunks!!! That's the show I grew up with!
CrazieIsha 10-31-2004, 05:08 PM I've never even heard of the Alvin Show... but I love Alvin & the Chipmunks! I've got stuffed animals of all three chipmunks and they're on my desktop backround. I love Simon!!

I don't know much about it but it aired in the 1960's.
I also grew up with "Alvin and the Chipmunks". That was one of myt favorite shows. However, in retrospect "The Alvin Show" might have been better. I just need a chance to see both shows again.
Rugratskid 08-14-2013, 05:29 PM The Alvin Show! In fact, I have some episodes and songs on my PC.
tv star collector 08-14-2013, 07:26 PM The Alvin Show ran on CBS, in prime-time, on Wednesday nights in 1961 (opposite Top Cat, on ABC). So, it was geared more to appeal to all ages.Alvin & the Chipmunks (created and produced by the late Ross Bagdasarian's son), on the other hand, was created for Saturday mornings; so it was designed primarily for children (not that it couldn't also be enjoyed by adults). So, I think the first series probably had wider appeal (although, after one season, it was moved to Saturday morning). In the later series, Ross Jr. (whose father voiced David Seville, Alvin, Simon & Theodore) was the voice of Dave, Alvin and Simon; while his wife, Janice Karman, voiced Theodore. They also appeared in some prime-time TV specials. BTW, the Chipmunks made their initial debut, as recording artists, in December 1958. Their first TV appearance, as hand puppets, was on Ed Sullivan's show.
angiefan 08-14-2013, 07:54 PM i grew up with alvin and the chipmunks.
waichingliu81 08-15-2013, 03:49 PM i too grew up with the 80s chipmunks. they're still my favourite version of the chipmunks. i saw some episodes of the 60s ones, but i thought they sounded strange. it's not the chipmunk voice, just how they sounded when they talked. i don't know how to put it.
irehtman 08-15-2013, 04:56 PM I abhor that "Alvin And The Chipmunks" show! That show had too many stupid endings in each episode. Well the only episode with a good emotional ending was "The Reunion episode".

The Alvin Show for me. And I think the show being on DVD is probably held up by music clearances. I have a bootleg of the complete series.
Vahan 08-15-2013, 10:29 PM The songs on The Alvin Show were public domain. Ergo, no excuse not to release all 26 episodes on DVD at all.
As for which one I prefer? Well, that would be the latter.
MrCleveland 08-19-2013, 02:31 PM I grew-up with "Alvin and the Chipmunks", but I like "The Alvin Show" as well...but I give the nod to "Alvin and the Chipmunks".
Rugratskid 10-04-2014, 02:00 PM The Alvin Show for me. And I think the show being on DVD is probably held up by music clearances. I have a bootleg of the complete series.
Do you have a website link to where you bought it? I'd love a complete series set more than anything, :)
Mace Dolex 10-04-2014, 08:07 PM I grew up on Saturday morning cartoons in the 80s so for obvious reasons I like Alvin & The Chipmunks better, the animation was superior. I didn't discover the old The Alvin Show until years later and was shocked they had been around that long.

comedyfreak 10-14-2014, 02:27 PM The 60's Alvin Show.
MacLeaper 10-14-2014, 03:40 PM Both are great! I grew up with Alvin & The Chipmunks in the '80s, so I would probably have to go with that series- but I like Alvin and the gang in general. Any of their series are great- even the movies aren't too bad (not the greatest in the world- but cute enough.)
Elainer 02-15-2017, 06:47 PM I love both and I wished they had both of all of the episodes on DVD!
