Turner himself notes that the show's "Golden Age" ended in about 1997, and while there are still flashes of its former brilliance in the subsequent, current era, "the Long Plateau," the program seems to have lost its edge. The show defined the nineties.

Oh ya! It's actually really similar to the opinion expressed at www.doheth.co.uk/opinion/season.shtml. The Simpsons definitely fell from grace around season 9, with the addition of Mike Scully as executive producer of the show.
Also, it's true that The Simpsons defined the 90's, proving they are not just a fad, and that it is still leagues above Family Guy!

Perhaps, but there are still episodes worth watching. I liked the Halloween segment where the games come to life.

That's definitely true. Simpson's has more class than those shows.
