Producer Pays Couple $1,000 in Pennies

LOS ANGELES - A Hollywood producer agreed to pay a couple $1,000 to stop noisy tree trimming during a TV shoot then delivered the payment in big bags of pennies.
While on location last month shooting a new series for Paramount Network Television, producer Ronald L. Schwary's location team asked Stefanie and Myron Roth to halt the trimming because the noise was interfering with the production.

The Roths agreed on the condition that they be paid $1,000.

Schwary, who won a best picture Oscar for the 1980 film "Ordinary People," waited several weeks before having 100,000 pennies delivered to the Roths.

Myron Roth, the retired president of a small entertainment company that produced the TV hit, "Baywatch," said he was baffled when the coins arrived.

"It took us a while to figure it out," he said.

When the Roths finally understood what had happened, they were outraged and threatened to sue.

Paramount responded with a letter apologizing for "any inconvenience" and agreed to pay the Roths $1,000 and donate $1,000 to a favorite charity.

Schwary and Paramount declined to comment.


I can't imagine how much room all those pennies must have taken up.

That and then just take to the bank to be changed into cash. I mean, it's still $1,000, either way you look at it.

The problem is that by the fact of receiving pennies and not bills it's humilliating. Don't tell me the network had run out of bills! LOL

LOL I understand that the production company thought the pennies would be like getting them the last laugh, but it wasn't the last laugh. How could it be? A thousand bucks is a thousand bucks. The landscape people could have hired someone with a truck for a hundred bucks or so - depending on how voluminous a thousand dollars in pennies is - to help them cart it to the bank. Then they could have informed a local news crew to film the fun-filled game of toting the bags into the bank. I guess that their further whining paid off for them though.

I read the full article in the L.A. Times, the Roth's were actually a very elderly couple and they couldn't even carry the bags to begin with!... Plus, it wasn't as if Paramount did this once, they did it a second time as well.

I understand these people seem greedy for asking for a $1,000 dollars, but you seem to dismiss the audacity of the movie company coming into their neighborhood and throwing their weight around.

They could have kissed my ass with 10 grand to tell me to alter my life for their freaking movie.

I see it as a kiss my as$, if I got that much money in pennies I'd be pissed too. That's humiliating in alot of ways, like the company can't afford Bills?
